‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). In Italian and English with Turkish abstracts. 2 volumes set: (911 p.), b/w and color ills. F. ‎The Silk Roads : A New History of the World‎

‎large 8vo, A major reassessment of world history in light of the economic and political renaissance in the re-emerging East, as well as a rediscovery of the seductive cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, Isfahan and Constantinople. Now in paperback. 656 pp. The region stretching from eastern Europe through the Balkans, across the Caucasus, the Caspian Sea and sweeping right across Central Asia deep into China and India, is taking centre stage in international politics, commerce and culture - and is shaping the modern world. These regions are obscure to many in the English-speaking world. They are places where the largest farms are bigger than small European countries (Kazakhstan); where the untapped supplies of uranium and potassium are vast (Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan) or where McDonalds buy the entire annual sesame seed harvest to sprinkle on the baps of their fast-food restaurants (Azerbaijan) These peoples, places and cultures once dominated the world, tied by trading networks, commercial veins through which religion, good and ideas were disseminated. The rise of the West in the early modern period came at the expense of these eastern networks. But now a new silk road is emerging, with patterns of exchange uncannily similar to those that have criss-crossed Asia for millennia.‎

‎Very Good German Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In German. 20 p., iv numerous b/w plates (Tafeln). Ein Weiteres Sultansbild von Gentile Bellini aus russischem Besitz. A study on Gentile Bellini, (1430-1507), was an Italian painter of the school of Venice. He came from Venice's leading family of painters, and at least in the early part of his career was more highly regarded than his younger brother Giovanni Bellini, the reverse of the case today. From 1474 he was the official portrait artist for the Doges of Venice, and as well as his portraits he painted a number of very large subjects with multitudes of figures, especially for the Scuole Grandi of Venice, wealthy confraternities that were very important in Venetian patrician social life. In 1479 he was sent to Constantinople by the Venetian government when the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II requested an artist; he returned the next year. Thereafter a number of his subjects were set in the East, and he is one of the founders of the Orientalist tradition in Western painting. His portrait of the Sultan was also copied in paintings and prints and became known all over Europe.‎

‎[FIRST ARMENIAN TELEMAQUE] Delemak: Vibasanutyun Feniloni. Gaggiaren bnagirn ew Hayeren Asxarhabar.

‎Good Armenian Full modern leather binding. An ex-library stamp on the colophon. Small 4to. (27 x 18 cm). In Armenian. 512, [8] p., engraved plates. Richly illustrated. Stains on pages and edges. Otherwise a good copy. Extremely rare first Armenian edition of Fenelon's "Telemaque". According to Abdolonyme Ubicini's account in his La Turquie actuelle (Paris 1855), Les Aventures de Télémaque was the most popular classic among Levantines in Istanbul in the first half of the 19th century, and it was translated into many languages besides Turkish and Arabic in the Ottoman Empire. The first printed version of a Greek translation dates from the 18th century, while an Armenian version by Ambroise Calfa was published in Paris in 1860. (The Ottoman Reception of Fénelon's Télémaque.; Meral, Arzu). The translator, Ambroise Calfa Nar Bey, Guy de Lusignan, (1831-1906), was a Franco-Armenian historian and linguist from the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Ambroise Calfa is one of the three sons of Kévork (Georges) -Youssouf Calfa, an Armenian trader living in Constantinople, and Sophie Cantar (or Kantaroglou), daughter of an Armenian merchant or banker from the Ottoman capital. Member of several learned societies, including the Asian Society, Ambroise Calfa published several historical or linguistic works, including an Armenian Calligraphy (Paris, 1853), a work awarded at the Universal Exhibition of 1855, and, above all, an Armenian-French Dictionary ( Paris, Hachette, 1861) dedicated to Emperor Alexander II. (Wikipedia). Les Aventures de Télémaque, fils d'Ulysse (The adventures of Telemachus, son of Ulisses) with the original title is a didactic French novel by Fénelon, Archbishop of Cambrai, who in 1689 became tutor to the seven-year-old Duc de Bourgogne (grandson of Louis XIV and second in line to the throne). It was published anonymously in 1699 and reissued in 1717 by his family. The slender plot fills out a gap in Homer's Odyssey, recounting the educational travels of Telemachus, son of Ulysses, accompanied by his tutor, Mentor, who is revealed at the end of the story to be Minerva, goddess of wisdom, in disguise. ‎Freely John‎

‎Stamboul Ghosts: A Stroll Through Bohemian Istanbul‎

‎8vo, hardcover in dj, In English. 144 p. With the exception of Og?uz, so thin that he was known as The Ghost because he barely cast a shadow, everyone in John Freely's rumbustious memoir, including the author himself, is larger than life. Bohemian Istanbul was a haven for myriad misfits who found their feet in the city. Glamorous, eccentric, cosmopolitan and frequently anarchic, they included the ‘berserker' Peter Pfeiffer, a resourceful exile with three passports, Aliye Berger, the beautiful queen of bohemian Pera, the writer James Baldwin and, fleetingly, the future Pope John XXIII. ‘Would James Baldwin have felt quite so liberated in Istanbul if he had not been a frequent guest at John Freely's parties and experienced that Never Never Land sense of bohemia among the expatriate faculty in an outrageously beautiful campus overlooking the Straits?' – Andrew Finkel ‘The beautiful images that adorn this memoir are by the great Ara Gu?ler. His work as a photojournalist for Magnum took him all over the world, and his archive of 800,000 negatives contains likenesses of Salvador Dali?, Alfred Hitchcock, Willy Brandt, John Berger, Maria Callas, Bertrand Russell, Pablo Picasso and Indira Gandhi, among others. But it is his chronicling of mid-twentieth-century Istanbul for which he is most loved.' – Maureen Freely.‎

‎Istanbul : The Imperial City‎

‎This is a biography of the city originally known as Byzantium, later renamed Constantinople and now called Istanbul. With a population of 10 million, it's the largest city in Turkey, adorned with splendid monuments of both Ottoman and Byzantium empires. This book gives an account of the city's history from the time of its founding up to the present day along with notes on the monuments that have survived from the successive epochs of its past. It's a biography rather than a political or architectural city with the emphasis on the life of the people and of the city.414p. plates illus, bliography.index 1" chip to DJ.else fine Book‎

‎Angry in Piraeus‎

‎Paperback. Book Condition: New. 241 x 152 mm. Language: English Brand New Book. Angry in Piraeus is the story of the creation of a translator, as Maureen Freely explores what it was in her childhood that led her to become a traveler across the spaces that exist between countries, languages, and forms. She offers rich descriptions of her itinerant upbringing in America, Turkey, and Greece, vividly evoking what it means to be constantly commuting between worlds - geographical, conceptual, linguistic, and literary - in search of a home, or a self, that is proving elusive. She tells of her transition from novelist to translator - and, specifically, translator of Nobel Prize - winner Orhan Pamuk - and of how eventually she found it necessary to give up translating Pamuk in order to return to her own fictional worlds. As in the entire Cahiers series, the author s words are complemented by beautiful artworks, in this case delicate collages created by Japanese artist Rie Iwatake that journey through their own in - between spaces in a captivating play of analogies and metaphors. The resulting book is an unforgettable meditation on translation, writing, and life itself.‎
