(W. F. Leemans, Journal of the Economic and Social History of the Orient, 1965)‎

‎Magic of clay and fire. A history of Kütahya pottery and potters.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (33 x 25 cm). In English. 405 p. Color ills. Some areas of art history have been overlooked in comparison to others, attracted less attention, and for this reason been the subject of less research and evaluation. Such situations are observed in particular where one branch or period of art in a country is so prominent as to overshadow its neighbours and counterparts. These neglected areas often deserve far more interest than circumstances grant them. Moreover, the bright light cast by their more famous cousins makes it harder, or even sometimes impossible, to do them justice and gain a true understanding of their qualities. A striking example of this phenomenon in Ottoman art is Kutahya ceramics, which have remained relatively unnoticed with the spotlight of attention focused on Iznik. When speaking of Ottoman ceramics it is first of all those of Iznik that spring to mind today, and this was no less true in the past. Kutahya pottery, like that of Canakkale, has been left to straggle far behind. Yet even a little examination reveals that although in comparison with these splendid 'court art' of Iznik, the pottery of Kutahya is regarded as provincial in character, and that of Canakkale as 'folk art', both these traditions are marked by lively originality and creativity. This book has been designed to throw new light on one of these overshadowed areas, the richly endowed world of Kutahya ceramics. In a region where pottery has been produced without interruption through the Phrygian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and modern periods, Kutahya's long history of pottery production - its development, materials, workshops and craftsmen - has now been re-examined in new depth. Garo Kurkman has combed museums and archives all over the world, bringing to light a myriad documents and photographs that have never been published before, and his fascinating study based on all this new information takes us on a thrilling journey through the magical world of clay, fire and glaze. Some aspects of art history are inevitably overshadowed, and attracting less attention are inadequately researched and evaluated. This happens particularly when one branch or period of a country's art rises to the fore and casts a dazzling light in which other close and similar forms pale into indignificance. arts which are so outshone do not receive the appreciation they really deserve, the brigjht of their illustrious fellow over shadwowed arts possess unexpected riches, uniqe flavours and unforeseen depths thath await discovery by the alert arthistorian, the sharp eyed collector, and the art lover who enjoys following rarely trodden paths.‎

‎Sultan's jewelers in the Ottoman palace, 1853-1871.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Folio. (34 x 24 cm). Edition in English. 472 p., color ills. Sultan's Jewelers in the Ottoman Palace, 1853-1871. The book "Sultan's Jewelers in the Ottoman Palace" primarily sheds light on the 19th century administrative and cultural history of the Ottoman Empire during a period of significant transition. The information obtained from the records of the "Jewelers Chamber" situated in the core of the Imperial Mint, over a period of 17 years ( A.H. 1270-1287 / A.D. 1853-1871) while the institution was under the management of the Ottoman Armenian family Duz and the reigns of Sultans Abdulmejid and Abdulaziz presents us with an invaluable treasure of information, the like of which has not been seen before. The records in the registers of the Imperial Mint Jewelers Chamber basically relate to the craft performed in the shop, but at the same time reveal very important historical facts. The information that gats accentuated are the specifics regarding the types, nature and cost of the orders and medals awarded to the military and civilian dignitaries honored by the Sultan. Also from the type and cost of the gifts shipped to Kaaba, to custom made jewelry for the Imperial Harem, from repairs made to worn out objects, to the type of jewelry the crown princes preferred to wear, the extravagance of certain crown princes mothers, to the type and value of items crafted for people with or without rank and certain other data which are now completely out of our reach are found in these records. In these records, taking the circumstances of the period as a basis, we also learn a lot about the jewelers terminology used in mid 19th century, names and costs of medals and orders employed in the Empire, details of precious gifts delivered to kings, queens and dignitaries of great nations giving direction to the era s politics and economy, information on goods imported from abroad or manufactured at the Imperial Mint only to be used at dinner parties and now lost in history, as well as the names of masters outside the Imperial Mint, names of articles and furnishings used at dinner parties given at Neshad-abad and Feriye Palaces, and other diverse data reflecting the spirit of the Tanzimat era, somewhat related to the activities of the Jewelers Chambers but which have not found their way into official documents.‎

‎GAUTIER (Théophile).‎

‎Constantinople.‎

Peu courant.‎

‎[MANUSCRIPT OTTOMAN HISTORICAL DOCUMENT - WAQF - OTTOMAN BALKANS] Gazi Evrenos Bey Vakfiyeleri mülhâkâtinda bulunan evkâf-i serîf musakkafât ve müstalâta mahsûs.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript and print paper. 40x26 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. Decorated with Sultan Abdulhamid II tughra. It includes the declaration of Gazi Evrenos Waqf lands that passed from the old owners to the new owners. Evrenos or Evrenuz (Gazi Hadji Evrenos Bey; died 17 November 1417 in Yenice-i Vardar) was an Ottoman military commander, with an unlikely long-lived career and lifetime. He served as a general under Süleyman Pasha, Murad I, Bayezid I, Süleyman Çelebi and Mehmed I. A persistent Greek legend maintains that Evrenos' father was a certain Ornos, renegade Byzantine governor of Bursa who defected to the Ottomans, and then on to Karasi, after the Siege of Bursa, in 1326. As one of the most successful Ottoman commanders, Evrenos acquired a considerable amount of wealth and founded numerous endowments (awqaf). "Hâci-Gâzi Evrenos Beg, who, together with Halil Hayreddin [Çandarli] Pasha, accepted the surrender of the city of Siroz (Serez) on September 19, 1383, used the city as his home base until he moved further west to Yenice-i Vardar at the end of the century. During the years he lived in Siroz he is known to have established a pious foundation (vakif). His endowment, which included a mescid (small mosque), which was rebuilt by a descendant at the end of the 18th century as a large Friday Mosque (câmi-i serif), a theological seminary (medrese), and a soup kitchen (imâret), is no longer extant.".
