‎A[YSE] MUHIBBE DARGA, (1921-2018).‎

‎Hitit sanati.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. In special slip-case. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In Turkish. 373 p., ills. Hitit sanati. Darga was a Turkish archaeologist. She was the granddaughter of Darugazade Mehmet Emin Bey, Sultan Abdülhamid's first chamberlain, the poet and translator of Jules Verne's novels from French into Turkish. Darga was born in Istanbul in June 1921 and was brought up by French governesses. She studied in Paris and Istanbul. Her father was a doctor and because of her father's professional obligations, she traveled through the Anatolia of the 1930s with her family. Roman and Greek history, debates on art and literature were the staple fair at the dinner table of this intellectual family of the late Ottoman era. Moreover, the family celebrated all religious rituals of the city like Christmas, Easter, Ramadan and sacrificial festivals, organizing fancy dress parties. Darge attended Istanbul University's Hittitology Department at the beginning of the 1940s. She would meet many notables of Archeology at this faculty, founded by Prof. Theodor Bossert who fled from Germany to Turkey. Her enthusiasm and extravert personality, excellence in French and German and of course passion for Archeology drew attention. After Prof Bossert discovered Karatape, a very important excavation site from Hittite era, Darga accompanied him in late 40s. She learned a lot from her tutor on the significance of history and archeology, and the Turkey of those days, during their travels and investigations on horseback. After her researches on Archeology in Germany and France, Darga concentrated on philology and then attained her professorship. In her book Woman in Anatolia, she indicated the status of women in this land and in her Hittite Art; she drew the attention of not only intellectuals but also the general public. This is Turkish Edition.‎

‎Abasiyanik Sait Faik‎

‎ABDALLAH-AL-YAFI, (1901-1986).‎

‎[FIRST ARAB TO RECEIVE A PHD ABOUT WOMEN'S RIGHTS IN SORBONNE] La condition privee de la femme dans le droit de l'Islam. [i.e. The legal status of women in the law of Islam].‎

‎Very Good French Original wrappers. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In French. [v], 163, [1] p. Chippings on extremities of cover, rubbed on spine, overall a good copy. First edition of this scarce book titled in English "The Legal Status of Women in the Law of Islam", written by Al-Yafi who was the Prime Minister of Lebanon serving twelve times between 1938 and 1969, and at the forefront of the struggle to give women the right to vote, which he was able to achieve with his cabinet in power in 1952. Abdallah Al-Yafi is the first Arab to receive a PhD from the Sorbonne University, where he wrote his thesis about women's rights in Islam. The thesis subject was "The Legal Status of Women in the Law of Islam" (French: La Condition Privée de la Femme dans le Droit de l'Islam). Drawing from Quranic decrees and Islamic principles, he made a case about how women are supposed to be allotted more rights in society. Al-Yafi believed that the empowerment of women was crucial for building a stronger society, equality providing a steadier base. These thoughts, when expressed in the 1920s, had quite an 'avant-garde' ring to conservative Muslim ears: they were not always welcome with wide open arms or minds. Later on in his political life, Abdallah Al-Yafi's political opponents brandished his thesis as a weapon of defamation to tarnish his reputation. According to them, he was not a "righteous Muslim" but a French minion who had given in to the French authorities-the colonial mandate authority in Lebanon at the time-in blaspheming the Islamic religion in reward of a "Doctorat d'État". These were aimed at ruining the honest image that he so carefully cultivated throughout his life.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 183 p. From Mudros to Lausanne: How Ahmed Emin's perception of the "Other" changed. This book explores the life and ideas of the eminent liberal journalist, Ahmed Emin (Yalman)'s changing perceptions of the "other" in the Armistice Period (1918-1923) and beyond. Throughout the work, Ahmed Emin's perception of non-Muslim Ottomans, non-Turkish Muslims and the Western powers, as well as the changes in these perceptions are all analyzed through both qualitative and quantitative methods and based on content analysis. In addition to his editorials, published in the two newspapers Vakit and Vatan in Istanbul during the Armistice Period, his narration and reconstruction of the past events in his memoirs (one of which was composed in English) are also included in the comparative analysis. The work shows that, along with the continuous elements in his writings, such as his almost unchanging liberal-Westernist ideology, Ahmed Emin's opinions were subject to change in accordance with changes on the ground and shifts in power configurations.‎

‎FIRST BRAZILIAN TRAVEL ACCOUNT OF THE ISLAMIC WORLD Tercme-i seyahatnme-i Brezilya sic. Brazilya. Prep. by Serif Efendi.‎

‎Istanbul: Matbaa-i mire. H.: 1288 1871. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall. Paperback. Green cover. Foolscap 8vo. 18 x 12 cm. In Ottoman script. 44 p. Abdurrahman Effendy's voyage to Brazil. "Two Ottoman warships bearing the names Bursa and Izmir left Istanbul en route to their new duty station in the Persian Gulf. The date was 12 September 1865. The ships passed through the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar into the Atlantic Ocean planning to follow the African shoreline to Basra at the head of the Persian Gulf. Such a voyage would normally take months even without problems. This voyage however met with unexpected events. After an eventful journey through the Mediterranean the ships reached Spain on 30 October and had to spend six months waiting at Cadiz. But the real adventure was waiting for them in the Atlantic. The ships departed Cadiz on 20 April visited the Canary Islands and reached the Cape Verde Islands on 14 May. After a two-day break the ships set sail once more but on 19 May they encountered a storm that threw them off course. Henceforth the ships' course would be determined by the storms and the ocean waves. This 17-day voyage of uncertainty ultimately brought them to the shores of Brazil where they laid anchor at the port of Rio de Janeiro. The Bursa and Izmir corvettes had to stay in Rio for two months. After then they set sail on the ocean once again and visited many ports including the Cape of Good Hope and Bombay before finally reaching Basra on 14 November 1866. In this way their 13-month journey or more appropriately their adventure came to an end. For the ships' crew members the voyage was filled with hardships and fear. Fortunately for us two of the crew of the Bursa wrote about the journey and left these accounts for us. They were ship engineer Faik Bey and Imam Abdurrahman Efendi who remained in Brazil for a while before returning to Istanbul. The travel log that Abdurrahman Efendi wrote in Arabic after he came back to Istanbul from Brazil was translated into Ottoman Turkish by Antepli Mehmed Serif Efendi and published in 1288/1871. In this work the transit to Brazil is mentioned briefly. The writer's main focus was not on the voyage but rather on the situation of the Moslems in Brazil and the work he took on there. His Brazil Travel Log though does give his route of return and the main points he visited on his way back to Istanbul.". Source: Accidental Turks in Brazil and Beyond JACK SNOWDEN. In his travel book Faik Bey says on Abdurrahman Efendi's situation: "Bagdatli Abdurrahman Efendi our ship' imam was persuaded with money by the Moslem negro populace living in Brazil and he absconded. The language of the negro prisoners the Portuguese kidnapped from Africa and brought here confirmed with the language of the American negroes. And since those who came from Africa were from Sudan they had some degree of familiarity with Islam. They knew the Ihls and Ftih suras and prayed five times a day. In the course of time they won over the American negroes and converted them to Islam as well. Now there are 9000 negro Moslems in Brazil. When we reached the port of Rio de Janeiro some of the Moslems came and met with our imam. Subsequently they came each day to learn about various religious matters from the imam. The didn't even have one Kur'an and would give the sailors 3-4 lira for a small section of the Kur'an called 'cz'. Since the imam was familiar with their language they were quite pleased and accommodating. Every few days they would invite him to a house on the outskirts of the city take him there and bring him back . Imam Abdurrahman Efendi is originally from Baghdad. For various reasons he migrated to Damascus and then during the trouble in Damascus he was arrested and put in the dungeon of the Imperial Shipyard in Istanbul.". From Snowden's translation.
