The project followed the serious models of Recueil general des mosaìques de la Gaule and Mosaici antichi in Italia. The corpus project was initiated at a meeting of mosaic experts from six countries led by M. Sahin and D. Parrish and held at American Research Institute in Turkey, Istanbul, in 2004. The first volume of the project covers the mosaics from Xanthos. This volume prepared for publication by Marie-Patricia Raynaud presents, with all their phases, the floor pavements of the East Basilica employing very successfully both opus tessellatum and opus sectile techniques. Two more aspects of this work need to be underlined: first of all, the magnificent photographs and the successful reconstruction drawings and floor plans of the mosaics, which will provide the reader with a visual festivity. This volume with its publication and research quality is a strong start for the Mosaic Corpus of Turkey. This also means that a high standard is already established for the future monographs. Vol. 2: The present book forms the second volume in the Corpus of the Mosaics of Turkey, following upon the initial work on Xanthos published by Marie-Patricia Raynaud in 2009. This new volume broadens the documentation and appreciation of mosaic art in that city. Future monographs in the same series will turn to other archaeological sites in Turkey, whose vast mosaic treasures are gradually receiving the scholarly attention they deserve. This entire project originated at a meeting of mosaic experts from six countries led by M. Sahin and D. Parrish and held at the American Research Institute in Turkey at Istanbul in 2004. In this work, Anne-Marie Manière-Lévêque, a very experienced member of the French team that has been excavating at Xanthos for many years, carefully records and interprets mosaic pavements from the western part of Xanthos, which includes buildings with mosaic decoration on the Lycian Acropolis and in the "Roman" Agora. The pavements ornamented both domestic and religious structures, and they include several fine figural carpets in addition to geometric floors. The pavement techniques consist of both opus tessellatum and opus sectile, and chronologically they cover the late Antique and Early Byzantine periods. These floors complement the fine assortment of pavements found in the East Basilica inventoried in the first Xanthos volume. In both its text and rich illustration, the present work maintains the high standard of scholarship employed in the earlier volume, and all of this is underscored by the author's deep familiarity with the archaeological exploration of Xanthos. Both books in the series serve as models for future mosaic research in Turkey.

At a nineteenth century courtyard paved with Dutch clinkers stands the 'Palais de Hollande'. The name harks back to four hundred years of history of the building as the residence for the Dutch diplomats in Turkey. The Palais de Hollande was built in 1858 on the spot where Cornelis Haga, the first Dutch envoy to the Ottoman Empire, took up residence in 1612. This marks the beginning of diplomatic relations between Turkey and the Netherlands. Thanks to Jacobus Colyer, one of his successors, the State of the Netherlands later acquired ownership of the Palais de Hollande in Istanbul. Extremely rare pamphlet of the regulations of "the Maronite Brotherhood, or Enosis" which consists of 27 articles in modern Greek. The Maronites constitute a Christian group whose members adhere to the Syriac Maronite Church with the largest population around Mount Lebanon in Lebanon. The Maronite Church is an Eastern Catholic sui iuris particular church which is in full communion with the Pope and the Catholic Church, with the right of self-governance under the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, one of more than a dozen individual churches which are in full communion with the Holy See. The Maronites derive their name from the Syriac Christian Saint Maron, some of whose followers migrated to the area of Mount Lebanon from their previous place of residence which was located around the area of Antioch, and established the nucleus for the Syriac Maronite Church. Saint Maron sent Saint Abraham, often referred to as the Apostle of Lebanon, to convert the non-Christian native population to Maronite Christianity. The name of the Adonis River was changed to Abraham's river by the inhabitants after Saint Abraham preached there. Mass emigration to the Americas at the outset of the 20th century, due to famine mainly resulting from Ottoman blockades and confiscations during World War I, which killed an estimated one third to one half of the population during the Lebanese Civil War between 1975-1990 and the low fertility rate greatly decreased their numbers in the Levant. Maronites today form more than one-quarter of the total population in the Republic of Lebanon. All Lebanese presidents have been Maronites as part of a tradition that persists as part of the National Pact, by which the Prime Minister has historically been a Sunni Muslim and the Speaker of the National Assembly has historically been a Shi'i Muslim. Enosis is the movement of various Greek communities that live outside Greece, for incorporation of the regions they inhabit into the Greek state. Widely known is the case of the Greek-Cypriots for the union of Cyprus into Greece. The idea of enosis is related to the Megali Idea, an irredentist concept of a Greek state which dominated Greek politics following the creation of the modern Greek state in 1830. The Megali Idea was a project which called for the annexation of all ethnic Greek lands, parts of which had participated in the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s but were unsuccessful and remained under foreign rule. In 1821, several parts of Western Thrace rebelled against Ottoman rule, participating in the Greek War of Independence. During the Balkan Wars, Western Thrace was occupied by Bulgarian troops and in 1913 Bulgaria gained Western Thrace under the terms of the Treaty of Bucharest. Following World War I, Western Thrace was withdrawn from Bulgaria under the terms of the 1919 Treaty of Neuilly and put temporarily under Allied management before being given to Greece at the San Remo conference in 1920. Following the conclusion of World War I, Greece began the occupation of Smyrna and surrounding areas of Western Anatolia in 1919 at the invitation of the victorious Allies of World War I, particularly David Lloyd George the British Prime Minister. The occupation was given official status in the 1920 Treaty of Sèvres, with Greece being awarded most of Eastern Thrace and a mandate to govern Smyrna and its hinterland. Smyrna was declared a protectorate in 1922. However, the attempted Enosis failed when the new Turkish Republic prevailed in the resulting Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922, after which most Anatolian Christians who had not already fled during the war were forced to relocate to Greece in the 1923 population exchange treaty executed between Greece and Turkey. This new volume in the series dedicated to Hierapolis presents the results of an ambitious project concerning the 3D reconstructions of its main monuments and the virtual restoration of the artefacts and pictorial and mosaic decorations, present above all in the houses of the city's aristocracy. Some of these items have already been described in previous publications, but in this volume, together with hitherto unseen images, they are part of the Virtual Tour of the city, which can also be experienced via on-line and off-line platforms, choosing from three different visitor itineraries. As well as the specific need to study the ancient architecture by means of 3D virtual reconstructions, the creation of the Virtual Tour of Hierapolis provides an answer to the questions posed by the rising number of tourists, which now exceeds two million a year, placing the city, together with Ephesus, among the most popular archaeological sites in Turkey. These reconstructions proved to be highly effective communication tools, enabling the viewing public to understand the appearance of the ancient buildings. Some of these virtual reconstructions were published in 2009 in the leaflet on Virtual Hierapolis, distributed to scholars and visitors. M. Limoncelli was a constant presence in the MAIER in those years, but it was only during his Research Doctorate at the Sacro Cuore Catholic University in Milan, in the years 2013-2016, that his Project was systematically fulfilled. Christians and Jews in the Ottoman Arab World: The Roots of Sectarianism
8vo, br. ed. explores the history of Christians and Jews in the Arab provinces of the Ottoman empire and how their identities as non-Muslims evolved over four hundred years. At the start of this period, in the sixteenth century, social community was circumscribed by religious identity and non-Muslims lived within the hierarchy established by Muslim law. In the nineteenth century, however, in response to Western influences, a radical change took place. Conflict erupted between Muslims and Christians in different parts of the empire in a challenge to that hierarchy. This marked the beginning, as the author illustrates, of the tensions which have to a large extent inspired the nationalist and religious rhetoric in the empire s successor states throughout the twentieth century.
