‎Première édition française de cette importante contribution aux sciences nautiques, due au géomètre et officier de marine Jorge Juan Y Santacilla, édition originale datant de 1771, à Madrid. Il participa notamment à la célèbre expédition franco-espagnole au Pérou en 1735 pour mesurer l'arc du méridien proche de l'Equateur. Il fonda quelques années plus tard l'observatoire astronomique de Cadiz. "La combinaison de l'érudition et de l'expérience permit à Juan, dans son Examen maritimo, de fournir une base solide pour l'amélioration des sciences maritimes, de réfuter des théories empiriques en matière de navigation, et d'établir des principes fondamentaux d'architecture navale. L'ouvrage est une application estimable de la mécanique à la science navale." (DSB). La présente édition française est enrichie d'importantes additions dues à son traducteur, l'hydrographe français Pierre Lévêque (1746-1814). Among other notable accomplishments the author participated in the famous joint French-Spanish expedition to Peru in 1735 to measure an arc of the meridian near the equator, founded the astronomical observatory at Cadiz, and established the Friendly Literary Society, the forerunner of the Royal Society of Sciences of Madrid. "His combination of theoretical learning and practical experience enabled Juan, in his Examen maritimo, to provide a considerable base for the improvement of naval science, to refute several empirical theories of navigation, and to establish the fundamental principles of naval architecture. ‎Comblant une longue absence de la France dans le domaine de la recherche polaire - depuis la découverte de la Terre Adélie par Dumont d'Urville en 1840 Charcot allait effectuer deux importantes expéditions en Antarctique, premièrement avec le Français en 1903-1905, puis à bord du Pourquoi Pas ? en 1908-1910. Les résultats de ces missions furent impressionnants : des milliers de kilomètres de côtes reconnues, des cartes marines d'une telle précision qu'elles sont encore utilisées un quart de siècle après par des pêcheurs de baleine, des milliers de photographies. Naviguant dans des conditions extrêmes à la lisière de la banquise, Charcot longe la Terre de Graham et découvre à 70º sud un territoire totalement inconnu qu'il baptise "Terre Charcot" en l'honneur de son père. Abondamment illustré par de nombreux documents inédits issus des archives de la famille Charcot, ce livre rend compte aussi des nombreuses missions scientifiques conduites par Charcot dans les mers du nord : aux îles Féroé, à Jan Mayen, en Islande et sur la côté oriental du Groenland où il collabore aux recherches de l'explorateur danois Mikkelsen, et où en 1934, il installe la mission ethnographique de Paul-Emile Victor. L'ultime chapitre de l'ouvrage évoque les conditions dramatiques du naufrage du Pourquoi Pas ? le 15 septembre 1936 au large d'Islande. Pris dans une tempête cyclonique, le navire se brise contre des récifs et sombre avec les membres de l'équipage. [12], 166, [2] p., b/w and color plates of Ottoman warships and scenes from naval wars, seven maps of the earliest examples of Ottoman cartography. Very rare second edition of this book on the history of Ottoman naval wars against Venetians began with the Crete campaign (War of Candia) in 1645 and lasted for years until 1656. The book was published first in 1729 in Müteferrika Printing House which was the first printing house in the Islamic world as the third printed book. This is the second edition including five maps of almost the same size (two paged) titled world map, The Mediterranean, The Archipelago (Aegean), The Adriatic Sea, and the compass-like in its first edition as well as two maps and twenty-six plates (some of them are color) and small illustrations of Ottoman ships as head of some carriage returns. Additional maps depict the city of Venice (from Kitab-i Bahriye [i.e. Book of Navigation) and the travels of Ottoman Admiral Sidi Ali Reis through the Sea of Oman. The Cretan War or the Fifth Ottoman-Venetian War, was a conflict between the Republic of Venice and her allies (chief among them the Knights of Malta, the Papal States, and France) against the Ottoman Empire and the Barbary States because it was largely fought over the island of Crete, Venice's largest and richest overseas possession. This account of Ottoman maritime warfare in Turkish, written in Safer 1067/November 1656. This date places the book in a moment of utmost danger for the Ottoman capital following the defeat of the Ottoman navy at the hands of the Venetians at the Dardanelles (4 Ramadan 1066/26 June 1656) and the subsequent loss of the islands of Lemnos and Tenedos. It is also written shortly after the appointment of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha as grand vizier (25 Dhulqada 1066/14 September 1656). Thus it is suggested to read it as a program of reform of the navy intended for a person whom Hadji Khalfa might have seen as the "man of the sword" who might revert the fate of the Empire. Of the four ulemâ [i.e. scholars] who wrote endorsements for the book, two are closely related to the Köprülü family. The first part is a history of Ottoman maritime campaigns from the beginning to 1067/1656, while the second is a systematic description of naval affairs, from administration and offices to shipbuilding, culminating in a list of 40 suggestions for the organization and strategy of the Ottoman navy, including the use of recent scientific and technological innovations. Thus the juxtaposition with history provides an argument for reform. Suggestions are largely centered around the traditional qanun-i qadim; there is no reference to high-board ships. The final pages include an important discussion of historical causality, explaining how divine omnipotence creates the consequence of historical causes, in reward for the righteous rule, or punishment of injustice. ‎Première édition de la traduction française établie par le comte de Mirabeau, Première relation concernant ces îles situées à l'est des Philippines, dont la population fut longtemps considérée comme dangereuse. Avant le naufrage de l'Antelope sur ses côtes, les îles Pelew (ou Palaos) n'avaient jamais été approchées par des européens. L'ouvrage est composé d'après les journaux du capitaine et de son équipage : il fournit une fascinante description des îles, des indigènes et des coutumes, ainsi que des péripéties extraordinaires du séjour. Combats de l'équipage au côté du roi des Pelew, construction d'un nouveau bateau pour le retour à Macao, etc. L'équipage réussit à regagner l'Angleterre en juillet 1784, accompagné du fils du roi des Pelew. ‎Relation du naufrage en août 1783 du vaisseau de la Compagnie des Indes orientales , L'Antelope, commandé par le capitaine Henry Wilson, au large des iles Palau (ou Palaos) en Micronésie. L'équipage réussit, avec les débris du navire et l'aide précieuse des indigènes, à construire une embarcation et regagner Macao, en compagnie du prince Lee Boo, fils du roi local. Ce récit, rédigé à partir du journal et des communications de Wilson, fournit l'une des plus importantes descriptions de cette région du monde. Il comprend un vocabulaire de la langue palau, ici aux pages 251-267 du tome II. Joli exemplaire, bien complet des faux-titres avec la table des gravures au verso de chacun d'eux. Manque la planche de Ludée , coiffes usées , déchirure à la carte sans manque .‎

Dating from the time when the Ottoman Empire was approaching its zenith of wealth and power, these charts are a valuable source of information about the history of the period. The work of the Ottoman privateers who then held sway over most of the Mediterranean, these charts cover a geographical area far beyond the bounds of the Ottoman Empire. as rulers of an expanding empire, the Ottoman sultans took a close interest in mapmaking and may well have commissioned their sea captains to draw the charts. When Piri Reis presented his first world map to Sultan Selim I, conqueror of Egypt, in 1517, the sultan is said to have declared, "How small is the world for a conqueror.".‎

This copy bears the scarce ownership signature at the top of the front wrapper of ROBERT G. HARPER 1765-1825 the noted politician who served as major general in the War of 1812 U.S. representative and senator and original member of the American Colonization Society; the famed statement "Millions for defense but not a cent for tribute" was a toast made by Harper in 1798 after the XYZ Affair.
