Volume 2 in THE NEW JERSEY HISTORICAL SERIES. From the Dust Jacket: "These eye-witness testimonies recapture the emotions and motivations of a century ago as a wide variety of people relate incidents from those tragic years. Included are accounts by the President of the United States two governors generals and men in the ranks poets and reporters a chaplain a disgruntled inventor angry politicians a distinguished foreign minister a defeated presidential candidate a Confederate officer and others who were patriots or near-traitors The story begins on February 21 186 when President-elect Lincoln in a seven hour visit to the state acquaints 'Jerseymen' with the course he will have to take if the secessionists push him too far. Seven weeks later the echo of a mortar rolled across Charleston Harbor; and the war no sane person wanted became a reality. New Jerseyans reacted patriotically to the President's call to arms with 'the sternest determination to sustain and reestablish the honor of the country.' The state supplied 40 regiments of infantry 3 regiments of cavalry and 5 batteries of light artillery which saw action on every major battlefield of the conflict. More than 6000 loyal citizens lost their lives." . First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Very Good condition./VG DJ price clipped. 8vo. xiv 135pp. D. Van Nostrand Company Hardcover
