Anthony Slater b. 1779 was an importer and wholesaler with a store located on E. & J. Perot's wharf in Philadelphia. An English immigrant his success in his new home is illustrated by his admission to the First City Troop in 1805 and his commissioning of a miniature by Philadelphia artist Raphaelle Peale son of Charles Willson Peale in 1814.
