Handwritten Charter Forming a 'Special Relief Corps' of YMCA Members to Help Care for Soldiers at Annapolis Military Hospital
Washington DC: Rooms of the Y.M.C.A. 1865. Single sheet folded to 7 1/4" x 9 3/4. Document shows two old horizontal fold creases else fine. Ink remains clean and legible. Dated March 27th 1865 at the Rooms of the Y.M.C.A. in Washington D.C. this document reads as follows: <br /> ____________<br /> <br /> "The undersigned hereby organize ourselves into a 'Special Relief Corps' to be held in readiness to send not exceeding three of our members at one time to help care for sick and starved soldiers at the U.S. General Hospital at Annapolis Maryland. We agree that our delegates shall remain at Annapolis working under the supervision of either the local manager of the U.S. Christian Commission stationed there or of the Directress of said hospital for a time not exceeding three days excepting as they may be able or willing voluntarily to remain longer. Otherwise in cases of special emergency their places are to be filled by others of our number all of whom are to be held in readiness to go to Annapolis upon notification by telegram or otherwise of such services being needed. <br /> <br /> signed Geo. Stinemetz"<br /> <br /> words in brackets above stricken through.<br /> ____________<br /> <br /> The U.S. General Hospital mentioned in this document occupied a substantial area of the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. It was the primary receiving point for Union soldiers wounded in the eastern theatres of the war as well as those being returned from Confederate prisons such as Libby and Andersonville. The former prisoners were in shockingly poor health due to the conditions in which they were held with many dying on the transports to Annapolis and those who survived needing much attention. Letter of Formation of Y.M.C.A. "Special Relief Corps" for Sick and Starved Soldiers at Annapolis
1865. Single sheet folded in half to 7 3/4" x 9 3/4. Fine condition with some mild browning light stains and two horizontal mailing folds. Original handwritten letter dated March 27 1865 from the "Rooms of the Y.M.C.A." in Washington DC. The letter organizes a "Special Relief Corps" of short term nurse volunteers standing ready to travel from Washington DC to Annapolis to assist in the care of soldiers in the U.S. General Hospital there. The text of the letter is as follows: <br /> <br /> "The undersigned hereby organize ourselves into a 'Special Relief Corps' to be held in readiness to send not exceeding three of our members at one time to help care for sick and starved soldiers at the U.S. General Hospital at Annapolis Maryland. We agree that our delegates shall remain at Annapolis working under the supervision of either the local manager of the U.S. Christian Commission stationed there or of the Directoress of said capital for a time not exceeding three days excepting as they may be able or willing voluntarily to remain longer. Otherwise in cases of special emergency their places are to be filled by others of our members all of whom are to be held in readiness to go to Annapolis upon notification by telegram or otherwise of such services being needed."<br /> <br /> The "starved soldiers" referred to in the letter were Union prisoners of war recently released from Confederate prison camps. Annapolis was the receiving station for prisoners returning from Andersonville Belle Isle Libby Prison and other Confederate prisons.<br /> <br /> The document is signed by eight men including George May Powell notable Y.M.C.A. activist Lincoln supporter and Treasury Dept statistician and Benjamin Stinemetz national vice-president of the Y.M.C.A. unknown

Annapolis: S.n. 1832. Single sheet folded in half to 7 5/8" x 12 1/4. Fine condition with old horizontal folds no doubt for placement in a delegate's vest pocket. There is one clean 3/4" tear along the edge of one of these folds otherwise nearly perfect. Typeset and printed draft of a substitute bill which was adopted by the Maryland General Assembly on March 8 1832. The bill was to supplement to Maryland's law regarding elections originally enacted in 1812. <br /> <br /> The present bill noting that the United States Congress had not yet acted on its apportionment bill following the 5th Census to fix "the ratio of representatives from the several states in this Union" proposes to divide Maryland into districts for the purpose of choosing electors for United States President and Vice-President and to specify the numbers of electors from the counties within those districts. <br /> <br /> Henry Brawner was a delegate from Charles County. Jesse Hunt whose bill Mr. Brawner sought to displace was a delegate from Baltimore City. There are several changes to the printed text penned in an unknown hand though surely a member of the General Assembly.<br /> <br /> For discussion of the General Assembly's consideration of this substitute bill and the original it replaced see "Journal of the Proceedings of the House of Delegates of the State of Maryland December Session One Thousand Eight Hundred and Thirty-One" pages 507-511.<br /> <br /> An interesting piece of Maryland elections and legislative history from a simpler time. [OTTOMAN MILITARY MAP of PATAGONIA and FALKLAND ISLANDS: ROUTE of DRESDEN] Alman kruvazörü Dresden'in takîbi ve tahrîbi. SMS Dresden cruiser's routes between 1913-1915 (World War 1) on the Patagonian shelf; western shores of South America, Patagonia and Falkland Islands. Dresden spent much of her career overseas. After commissioning, she visited the United States in 1909 during the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, before returning to Germany to serve in the reconnaissance force of the High Seas Fleet for three years. In 1913, she was assigned to the Mediterranean Division. She was then sent to the Caribbean to protect German nationals during the Mexican Revolution. In mid-1914, she carried the former dictator Victoriano Huerta to Jamaica, where the British had granted him asylum. She was due to return to Germany in July 1914, but was prevented by the outbreak of World War I from doing so. At the onset of hostilities, Dresden operated as a commerce raider in South American waters in the Atlantic, then moved to the Pacific Ocean in September and joined Maximilian von Spee's East Asia Squadron. Dresden saw action in the Battle of Coronel in November, where she engaged the British cruiser HMS Glasgow, and at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in December, where she was the only German warship to escape destruction. She eluded her British pursuers for several more months, until she put into Robinson Crusoe Island in March 1915. Her engines were worn out and she had almost no coal left for her boilers, so the ship's captain contacted the local Chilean authorities to have Dresden interned. She was trapped by British cruisers, including her old opponent Glasgow. The British violated Chilean neutrality and opened fire on the ship in the Battle of Más a Tierra. The Germans scuttled Dresden and the majority of the crew escaped to be interned in Chile for the duration of the war. The wreck remains in the harbor; several artifacts, including her bell and compass, have been returned to Germany.

Octavo single issue printed wrappers. Features the first publication of the classic tale "The Wondersmith." This story is considered an early robot story. A toyshop owner plans to massacre thousands on the Christmas holiday by supernaturally animated small toy soldiers dolls and animals with small poisoned blades. This story influenced other writers and can be seen today in popular film such as Chuckie and others. Jessica Amanda Salmonson writes in her introduction to O'Brien's works ".O'Brien is the most important figure after Poe and before Lovecraft in modern horror literature. A Manuscript ‘Public Statement of protest’ Recording the Hostile Actions of a French Privateer Against a Portuguese Merchantman in June 1813
Plymouth 1813. Plymouth Devon England: 21st July 1813. Folio 7 pages 13 1/8 x 8 ¼ inches duty blindstamp small ink stamp to upper inner margin of the first page two seals to the last page signed twice by Galindo. Toned some small repaired tears using reversible archival ph-neutral paper-repair tape very good to near fine. Very Good. An interesting document of privateering in the Peninsular war this ‘Public Instrument of Protest‘ documents a Portuguese captain and crew complaint in detail to an English notary. After sailing from Calcutta to Brazil and then from Rio to just outside of Lisbon their ship the 700-ton ‘Oceano’ was seized and comprehensively ransacked by a French privateer the ‘Lion’ out of Lorient. Most of the crew and passengers were offloaded onto a passing American vessel the ‘Leda’ bound for Lisbon. Meanwhile the ‘Lyon’ escorted her prize towards the nearest French port but before a friendly haven was reached they were both set upon by the brigantine HMS ‘Achates’. The ‘Lyon’ escaped but the ‘Ocean’ was captured by Commander Morrison and the ‘Achetes’. The ’Ocean’ was taken to Plymouth and moored in the Hamoaze. The remaining Portuguese crew who had been forced to remain aboard the ‘Ocean’ by the French got a message to the ‘Ocean’s Master Dn. Ignacio Joze Martins and he and the boatswain made their way to Plymouth as quickly as possible. The sworn statement presented here is in English thanks to the translation given by Francisco Martins d' Magalhaens master of a Portuguese ship “now dwelling in Plymouthâ€<br /> <br /> The ’Oceano’ sailed from Calcutta to Brazil arriving 10th February 1813. She left Rio on 4th April all was plain sailing until the afternoon of the 7th June off the Rock of Lisbon when the ‘Lion’ showed up first under false British colors then French. The fighting was fierce the privateer was driven off once but eventually the ‘Oceano’ was taken. The night of the 7th June was spent by the French ‘conveying everything Moveable and Valuable from the Ocean to the Privateer’. The ‘Leda’ the US vessel landed the majority of the ‘Ocean’s crew including the Master in Lisbon on the evening of the 9th June.Monday 14th June the ‘Lyon’ engaged in a running battle with HMS ‘Achates’ and escaped but the ‘Achates’ did capture the ‘Ocean’. Wednesday 16th June the ‘Ocean’ arrived in Plymouth under the watchful eye of the ‘Achates’. Receiving the crew’s message the Captain of the ‘Ocean’ left Lisbon for Falmouth and then Plymouth arriving on the 20th July. Message of the Governor of Maryland Communicating the Report of the Commissioners appointed to survey the River Potomac
Annapolis: Printed by J. Hughes 1822. First edition. Modern quarter Morocco and cloth over boards. Octavo. 92 pages. Very good with foxing to title page and a few following. Spine is titled in gilt. Comes in a custom marbled paper slipcase. Two fold-out tables. Scarce report on the affairs of the Potomac Company in 1821 as investigated by a joint commission appointed by Maryland and Virginia. Here Maryland Governor Samuel Stevens formally transmits this report to the Maryland Legislature on January 1 1823.<br /> <br /> The Potomac Company was formed in the late 18th century with the object of reengineering the Potomac River to create a navigable link from the Ohio country to the port at Georgetown George Washington was an investor and served as the Company's first president. <br /> <br /> By 1821 the Virginia-Maryland joint commission found that the Potomac Company had "incurred heavy debts which their present resources can never enable them to discharge nor is it reasonable to expect in such circumstances that they can ever effect the objects of their incorporation."<br /> <br /> Further the commission found that the Potomac Company's sluice navigation system which was heavily dependent on "floods and freshets" was impractical and that only a still-water canal with locks could provide a navigable route that could be used consistently enough to be profitable. <br /> <br /> In the wake of this report the Potomac Company announced that it could not fulfill its charter. The project was subsequently taken up by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company chartered in 1825.<br /> <br /> OCLC locates 10 copies. Printed by J. Hughes unknown
