WW II Pacific War, Iwo Jima Invasion
Iwo Jima Invasion Preparation Original US Military Reconnaissance Photos for Report Dated July 1944 or 7 months before the Battle of Iwo Jima - the bloodiest in the Pacific theater
1944. Archive of Fifteen original WWII photographs of Iwo Jima Reconaissance Missions for the US Military. Date July 4 1944. Images mounted on paper with typed descriptions set includes Photo No. II - XVI missing photo I. Photos measure 5 x 7†to 6 x 7†all mounted onto 8 x 13†paper to be part of military report in preparation for the battle. The report also notes various defensive attributes and landmarks on the island such the “eastern boat basin†Chidoriga Hara Suribachi Yama Moto Yama radio stations entrenchments a taxiway and an RDF Radio Direction Finding tower. Also notes aspects of the landscape in the photos to consider for battle planning such as “steep terraces†“rugged interior†and “steep cliffs.†Iwo Jima was the at the center of conflict in the Pacific theater of WWII; it was an important midway point between Tokyo and the US airbase on the Mariana Islands and was the setting for one of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific when US Marines invaded on February 19 1945 subsequently known as the Battle of Iwo Jima. These photos were taken on July 4 1944 -- 7 months before this historic battle began. The American invasion Operation Detachment had the purpose of capturing the island with its two airfields: South Field and Central Field also known as Motoyama Airfield No. 1 and Motoyama Airfield No. 2; report includes images of these airfields. The airfields were considered important military resources as they provided a place at the midpoint between Tokyo and the US airbase on the Mariana Islands where damaged Allied planes could land; it could also provide airfields for long-range P-51s which provided fighter coverage to the bombers. Notably this report fails to mention the possibility for any type of tunnel bunker or underground fortifications; it is clear evidence of the way in which Allied forces misjudged and underestimated Japanese defensive strategies leading the Battle of Iwo Jima to be one of the bloodiest conflicts in the Pacific. <br /> <br /> Starting on 15 June 1944 the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army Air Forces began naval bombardments and air raids against Iwo Jima. These photos were taken just over two weeks after the initial bombing campaign began; and they clearly show that the US military was gaining reconnaissance on beaches coastline and areas where they had encountered fierce Japanese resistance in other battles. The images were likely taken by members of a US Navy Task Force with aircraft assigned to sweep the island and destroy defenses. Images depict Motoyama Airfield with smoke issuing from the area a wrecked vessel in the “eastern boat basin†and the rugged landscape of the island from the southern to northeastern tip. The report notes various defensive attributes and landmarks on the island such Chidoriga Hara Suribachi Yama Moto Yama radio stations entrenchments a taxiway and an RDF Radio Direction Finding tower. Also notes aspects of the landscape to consider for battle planning such as “steep terraces†“rugged interior†and “steep cliffs.†At this time and in anticipation of a US invasion Japanese forces were preparing an unusual defense that broke with established Japanese military doctrine -- rather than defending the beaches Japanese Lt. Gen. Kuribayashi devised a plan to create an intricate system of underground tunnels and fortifications. Kuribayashi was ordered by Tojo to resist to the last man on Iwo Jima in order to gain time necessary for the preparation of the Japanese Homeland defenses. In July and August of 1944 thousands of Japanese soldiers were arriving on the island to support the defensive strategies of building tunnels and underground fortifications-with a dense network of bunkers hidden artillery positions and 11 miles of tunnels. This report fails to mention the possibility for any type of tunnel bunker or underground fortifications. This is clear evidence of the way in which Allied forces misjudged and underestimated Japanese defensive strategies; as the US was preparing for a more traditional combat and were not anticipating such extensive underground channels the battle ended up being the bloodiest in the Pacific theater. Unaware of General Kuribayashi's tunnel defense system the US Military assumed that the majority of the Japanese garrison were killed by the constant bombing raids leading up to the invasion in February 1945. American intelligence sources were confident that Iwo Jima would fall in one week. In light of the optimistic intelligence reports including these photos the decision was made to invade Iwo Jima in Operation Detachment. US Marines landed and began to inch their way forward inland oblivious to the danger. After allowing the Americans to pile up men and machinery on the beach Kuribayashi unleashed everything from machine guns and mortars to heavy artillery began to rain down on the crowded beach which was quickly transformed into a nightmarish bloodbath. Veterans of the battle recalled harrowing battles in fox-holes and trenches and according to the National WWII Museum: “In thirty-six days of fighting ton the island nearly 7000 US Marines were killed. Another 20000 were wounded. Most Japanese soldiers fought to the death. Of the 21000 Japanese soldiers on Iwo Jima only 216 were taken prisoner. The Medal of Honor was awarded to 22 U.S. Marines during Iwo Jima that was 28% of the 82 awarded to Marines in World War II. Archive photos are a bit curling and have some toning. Paper mounts have moderate toning soiling and some chipping at edges. The archive is still overall in good to very good condition. A unique piece military history from one of the most important battles of WWII. unknown

WWII Archive, Pacific Theater W. W.
WWII Pacific Theater Archives of North Carolina Sergeant Lee W. Harwell
1944. Large Archive of letters photographs and ephemera from the Army career of Sergeant Lee W. Harwell 1918-2006. Six letters totaling seventeen pages; about 150 photographs of varying sizes; Six letters totaling 17 pages; and miscellaneous military documents and ephemera. Sergeant Harwell hailed from Mooresville North Carolina. He enlisted as a Private in April 1941 training at Fort Bragg NC Camp Blanding FL Camp Shelby MS and Fort Sill in Oklahoma. Harwell was sent overseas in August 1944 as part of the 694th Field Artillery Battalion and fought in campaigns in New Guinea and the Philippines. The photographs in this archive include scenes from all of these locations showing camp life fellow soldiers training operations in the States and army life indigenous peoples in New Guinea and more including a healthy number of family photographs likely from Harwell's post-war life.<br /> <br /> Harwell's letters which were written to his fiancée Louise are nicely detailed and provide an intimate view of Harwell’s experiences. All five of the letters from the Philippines date from September 1945 when in the immediate aftermath of the war Harwell was charged with guarding Japanese prisoners at a Prisoner-of-War camp north of Baguio Luzon the Philippines the sixth and final letter emanates from a few months later when Harwell was on his way home on the U.S.S. General Mitchell. Harwell’s letters include some general details of his combat experience and a list of places where his unit was positioned during the last six months of the war as well as discussion of his present occupation. Brief excerpts from just a few of the letters are as follows and provide a flavor of Harwell's experiences and his use of contemporary language:<br /> <br /> September 11 1945: "This afternoon I was called to Battalion HQ and on the way down I passed an untold number of Japs. MPs of course were all along the road but it made me feel funny to be right in the middle of them without any fear of trouble. All seem very cheerful and glad the war was over and of course an American cigarette brought a smile from all. Here at out stockade we are expecting several hundred of Japs to come in tonight or early in the morning. I have been trying to keep away from the Japs as much as I can because they are laden with lice and other body insects. Speaking of stealing we our Battalion had a bad name while at Hollandia. And we were not the only ones doing it either. To get coffee at times we stole from the navy and outfits that were there. And before coming into combat they would not issue us enough trailers so night after night groups of men would go out to borrow a trailer from some Base Command outfit. The generator we have now for our lights at our rest camp was taken by two of our men out on as we called 'Midnight Requisition" party. They happened to be at back as it was being unloaded from a ship so they backed a truck up hook it up and went right on past the M.P. at a checking point. We had to lock the gears of vehicles to keep them from being stolen."<br /> <br /> September 12: "We have company tonight there are about five hundred Japs in a stockade about fifty years from where I am at. They are Jap sailors and much cleaner and look as if they have had better care. I imagine they are from some Jap ship sunk off Luzon and went into these hills to wait rescue but we stepped in and have other ideas for that. There are guards about every twelve feet and waiting for a false move by any of them. One of our trucks just came in from a two-day trip hauling Japs out to a P.O.W. Camp. And they told me of going through Baguio and the people there even shot at the Japs going through town and they all drivers had to fight to keep the civilians out of the road and keep them from killing the Japs."<br /> <br /> September 15: "The Japs are still pouring in and the stockade being made bigger and all that we get seem to be navy personnel so it looks as if the whole Jap navy was destroyed around this island. And lots of the Japs are too sick to walk. Since Wednesday four Japs have died. And the strange part of it is the cruelty they display on each other. I went down yesterday to where they keep their sick and wounded. A Jap was dying and the other Japs picked him up and rolled him out of the tent into the mud and left him to die. The Jap doctors don't seem to care if they all would die. And they leave the dead bodies out in rain and pass by and look at the bodies and laugh about it. We Americans wouldn't treat a dog like that."<br /> <br /> The ephemeral items include a smattering of military paperwork a shoulder patch a pamphlet on Fort Sill an American Red Cross pamphlet and more. A unique and informative collection of images and letters documenting one soldier’s experiences in training and in the Pacific during World War II.Images removed from a disbound photograph album some trimmed. Some caption on verso or onclips of album pages attached to the relevant image. Original folds minor wear to letters. Very good condition overall. unknown

ZATTA Antonio (Venezia 1722 - 1804)
- THE VERY RARE SECOND EDITION OF 1794 - Taken from 'Raccolta di tutti i viaggi fatti intorno al mondo da diverse nazioni dell’Europa' by Jean Pierre Berenger. The date is changed into 1794Antonio Zatta's map of New Zealand is not only one of the first to show the results of Cook's voyages, but is also one of the most attractive of the islands. Considerable coastal detail, with reference to the Endeavour's path, and a little and surmised internal detail. The map delineates two islands, tentatively identifying the Southern Island separate. The map shows Cook's tracks around the island, along with the astronomical observations. Nice topographical detail is shown, along with a blend of native and European place names on the islands. The map includes several annotations. The decorative cartouche, in full original colour, shows a native village scene. New Zealand, though discovered by Tasman in 1642, received no further European exploration until the first Pacific voyage of James Cook. Cook sailed the coast of New Zealand for 6 months, proving that it was not part of the Great Southern Continent, as many had believed. Cook visited New Zealand several times, with Zatta's map drawn from information provided in the latest of his voyages.

BLOOD UNDER THE BRIDGE EDGAR AWARD FINALIST
NY: Harper & Row 1989. First Edition so stated with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in dust jacket not price clipped with protective mylar cover. Author's 1st book. San Francisco. EDGAR AWARD NOMINEE for Best First Novel. Cover illustration by James Steinberg "Gruesome murders of beautiful women the horrifying childhood of a literature professor a sex therapist's coded diary and a well-hidden surprise ending are just a few of the elements that round out this admirable first novel. Set in San Francisco the psychological mystery features Quinn Parker a wealthy young man who runs a unique counseling business and his friends who include an aspiring comedian and a once-up-and-coming lawyer who has opted for a less driven lifestyle. When Quinn discovers the mutilated body of his lover he becomes the homicide division's prime suspect. To clear himself and understand what was going on in Sonia's life that might have ended in her murder he begins his own investigation leading him to an earlier similar murder to the back reaches of rural Virginia to the arms of another girlfriend and finally to unwelcome truths about a friend. While certain events such as Quinn's easy access to the therapist's files may stretch credulity the story rings true in important aspects of character and motivation. Readers will eagerly await the promised next Quinn Parker story." -- Publishers Weekly. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Steinberg James. Book. Harper & Row

THICKER THAN WATER
NY: Harper Collins 1991. First edition so stated with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. Author's 2nd book featuring Quinn Parker. Cover illustration by James Steinberg. San Francisco & Priest River Jamaica setting. "San Francisco's phobia therapist and amateur sleuth Quinn Parker welcomed in Blood Under the Bridge confirms his appeal in his second adventure. Quinn jets to Jamaica with his old friend neophyte comedian and fearful flier Hank Wilkie; Hank's college friend and godfather to his son Matty Marty Greene recently killed in an apparent drug bust has left his family's island estate to the boy. Hank declines what seems a meager offer to buy the prime land near Priest River a town where violence including ghostly visitations and police beatings has driven down the price of real estate. Back in San Francisco Quinn begins to fall in love with Greene's widow Stephanie at the same time learning that the huge resort her wealthy brother secretly planned near Priest River had been stalled by Greene's unwillingness to sell. As murders accrue in both Jamaica and San Francisco Quinn returns to Priest River and is shot at in the jungle. He joins forces with a dreadlocked UCLA-educated lawyer to discover just who has been terrorizing property owners and why. Making the most of both of his settings fleshing out familiar characters as well as new ones Zimmerman highlights a distinctive cast in a skillfully plotted and smartly paced mystery." -- Publishers Weekly.
