The Oregon Trail a tale of trappers and tradershunterssettlersand Indiansreads like one of the great western novels of daring and adventure. In factit is one of the classic historical texts of itsor anytime. When the young historian Francis Parkman set out from Boston in 1846 to follow the famed Oregon Trailhe began a journey that was to enrich not only his lifebut the life of the nation.Recounting events that occurred as he travelled from St LouisMissourito the Oregon Territory and back Parkman captures conjures up a West in the midst of profound change. Jumbled togetherin the great westward movement that was then taking placeare people of every kind.A multitude of nationalities - French GermansMexicansCanadiansEnglishIrish - struggle to survive and prosper in the new land.Trappersfur tradershuntersand guides are closely observed practising their trades. The harshat times pitilesslife of the emigrants and settlers is starkly presented. The Indian way of life is portrayed as equally doomedat once tragic and extraordinarily stirring. As we witness American soldiers bound to conquer the Mexican Army and claim from them their golden landswe recognize how soon the Indians would be forced to relinquish a country of their own.Parkmanwho lived and travelled for a time among the Sioux Indianswrites vividly of a race and a culture that would suffer greatly from the taming of the West. PASCOE, J. D.
The Adams Valley and Glaciers, Southern Alps of New Zealand.
8vo. 6 pages, plus map and photographic plates for illustration. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Recounting mountaineering expeditions as early as the Baker and Butler survey of 1861, the author's illustrated compendium focuses on two expeditions undertaken in 1934 and 1935 by members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, one of whom is the author himself. The unknown watershed of Mount Adams into the Perth and Poerua rivers was the question to unravel on New Zealand's South Island, resulting in fascinating discovery, climbing, and mapping. Herein are described specific glaciers, unnamed cols, glacial tributaries, and climbing adventures. Excerpt from the text: "The Main Divide of the Southern Alps between Canterbury and Westland is a chain of glaciated peaks linked with curious passes. The subranges are equally intricate and the whole forms a fascinating wilderness... The story of the exploration of the Southern Alps is long and eventful, and even in 1938 was not complete."

Patrick J. Dowling.
Irish Californians: Historic Benevolent Romantic.
San Francisco CA Scottwall Associates 1998. Hardcover First Edition 1998; First Printing indicated. First Edition 1998; First Printing indicated. Near Fine in Near Fine DJ: Both book and DJ show only minute indications of use. Book shows lower corners mildly bumped; a couple faint smudges at outside edges; binding square and secure; text clean. DJ shows light rubbing; price unclipped; mylar-protected. Overall very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder. NOT a Book-Club Edition. NOT an Ex-Library copy. 8vo. 515pp. Hardback with DJ. California in the mid-nineteenth century was awash with opportunity. The readily available land and the gold rush were big draws to an immigrant Irish population often fresh from the coffin ships of the dark famine years. The Eastern seaboard had served them well but did not present many with the opportunity for fame and fortune. So they came west in their hordes. The growth and development of California is inextricably linked to the story of the Irish settlers of those times. The state was in its infancy and the Irish were ideally suited to the frontier environment by dint of their vision and capacity for sheer hard work. Patrick Dowling's latest offering provides a vivid and exhilarating record of the history of the Irish in California. Included here are accounts of some noteworthy politicos as one might expect but also the stories of some of the ordinary Irish men and women who thrived in California. It is this holistic approach which brings Mr. Dowling's book to life. Through his engaging biographies of the personalities of the period he gives us an informative and accurate picture of the contribution made by the Irish. We learn of the senators mayors and judges who ran California and in particular San Francisco and of the teachers that often were the first to institutionalize education in the state. Also of the entrepreneurs developers and engineers whose plans and buildings still stand in testament to their endeavors. The soldiers who played such an important role in the formation of modern-day America and the altruistic Irish men and women who nursed and treated them are also featured. Irish sports stars that are now household names throughout the land are not forgotten. The list goes on. Each chapter deals not only with the actions and achievements of its subject but is also infused with details and clues as to their individual personality the inherent "Irishness" of the protagonists always to the fore. Comprehensively researched over 10 years and delightfully and lavishly illustrated it is at times witty often moving and always enticing. Dowling's style is akin to that of a storyteller. It is littered with skillfully handled twists and hilarious anecdotes. This is enjoyable in the extreme and an absolute requirement for any Irish Californian or anybody for that matter who has the slightest interest in the history of the Irish in America. Patrick Dowling wrote this book in his own words "to awaken Irish Americans to their forgotten heritage both in Ireland and California and to help inspire a renaissance of Irish history culture and achievements." He will certainly accomplish this dream. Scottwall Associates, hardcover
