WWII Indigenous Peoples U.S. soldier photographs recording military occupation transport and daily movement across the Admiralty Islands Samar and the Philippines during World War II and its immediate aftermath establishing how American forces operated through island bases coastal landings aircraft facilities and encounters with local indigenous communities. Made and retained by an unidentified American serviceman the group follows the circulation of personnel through several linked wartime zones rather than a single camp with local captions on the versos anchoring parts of the sequence to "Admiralty Islands" "Samar Island" and the "Philippines." This archive showcases soldiers posed at encampments and beside aircraft landing craft and small boats military vehicles moved through settlements and photographs of Indigenous and Filipino civilians showing the human landscape through which U.S. forces advanced occupied and remained into the surrender period.<br /> Photo archive of 45 likely silver gelatin photographs ranging from 2.5 x 3 to 3.5 x 5.75 inches Admiralty Islands Samar and the Philippines circa 1944 to 1945. Numerous versos carry manuscript identifications including "on Admiralty Islands" "Natives on admiralty Islands" "Samar Island" "Samar Philippines" "Philippine" and "chapel in philippines" while several prints bear circular "Passed by Naval Censor" stamps and one caption reads "Jap bomber Betty Sept. 1945 Samar" fixing at least one portion of the group to the post surrender occupation moment. The images include shirtless American servicemen posed in palm lined camps group portraits outside Quonset huts or temporary structures a parked twin engine military aircraft a beached or near shore vessel soldiers gathered around tables and equipment and an Asian soldier who looks to possibly be in Japanese uniform standing in front a monument. Many photos show the local community with views of thatched buildings colonial era religious structures village crowds market or street scenes women and children gathered before huts and several close portraits of Indigenous islanders.<br /> The photographs belong to the final phase of the Pacific war when the Admiralty Islands served as a major Allied base complex after the 1944 campaign and Samar remained part of the wider Philippine theater retaken from Japanese control and held through the end of the war. This on the ground perspective shows how soldiers' photos moved through censorship channels recorded the built infrastructure of island warfare and fixed the asymmetrical encounter between U.S. servicemen and local populations. Minor surface and edgewear album glue residue en verso images remain clear and writing legible; overall very good condition. In a plastic card protector. Rear side indicated this is number 107 of their Baseball Legends series. and has biographical and statistical information on Joe Torre and his career as a catcher and first baseman. The front is a picture of Joe Torre in a Cardinal's uniform kneeling with a bat and boldly signed in the lower half of the card. Joseph Paul Torre born July 18 1940 is an American professional baseball executive serving in the capacity of Major League Baseball's MLB chief baseball officer since 2011. A former player manager and television color commentator Torre ranks fifth all-time in MLB history with 2326 wins as a manager. With 2342 hits during his playing career Torre is the only major leaguer to achieve both 2000 hits and 2000 wins as a manager. From 1996 to 2007 he was the manager of the New York Yankees whom he guided to four World Series championships. Torre's lengthy and distinguished career in MLB began as a player in 1960 with the Milwaukee Braves as a catcher first baseman and third baseman. He also played for the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets until becoming a manager in 1977 when he briefly served as the Mets' player-manager. His managerial career covered 29 seasons including tenures with the same three clubs for which he played and the Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers until 2010. From 1984 to 1989 he served as a television color commentator for the California Angels and NBC. After retiring as a manager he accepted a role assisting the Commissioner of Baseball as the executive vice president of baseball operations. A nine-time All-Star Torre won the 1971 National League NL Most Valuable Player MVP Award after leading the major leagues in batting average hits and runs batted in. After qualifying for the playoffs just once while managing the Mets Braves and Cardinals Torre's greatest success came as manager of the Yankees. His clubs compiled a .605 regular season winning percentage and made the playoffs every year winning four World Series titles six American League AL pennants and ten AL East division titles. In 1996 and 1998 he was the AL Manager of the Year. He also won two NL West division titles with the Dodgers for a total of 13 division titles. California: Pacific Ventures 1984. 912 by 610mm. 36 by 24 inches. Colour printed poster laid down on foamcore. A view of Silicon valley in its early days parodying Saul Steinberg's classic New Yorker cover "View of the World from 9th Avenue". This view shows Silicon Valley and the offices of its important technology companies looming large in the foreground. Among the companies named are Apple Hewlett Packard and Intel. As the view recedes across San Francisco bay there is a humorously foreshortened view of North America with much smaller views of Lake Tahoe Las Vegas New York and Boston with of course MIT. North Carolina and Texas' computer industry centres are competitively nodded at as well with Piedmont NC's Research Triangle and Austin's Silicon Gulch both shown. Further in the distance is the Atlantic Ocean with France and Germany shown as long islands followed by the Pacific Ocean culminating in Japan. "Silicon Valley" is written at the top of the image in the New Yorker's instantly recognisable font. By appropriating Steinberg's image a self-aware joke about New York City's self-centredness Silicon Valley lays claim to its own importance in the world. Funnily enough they weren't entirely wrong as the next few decades of innovation and economic success would prove. The company behind this image Pacific Ventures appears to have been a venture capital firm in the area that was involved in the technology sector. However we have been unable to find any mention of a Pacific Ventures operating at this time in Silicon Valley though there was a explosion of such companies in the area following Apple's 1980 IPO. Nonetheless the statement behind this image would have served a Silicon Valley based investment firm well. Saul Steinberg's "View of the World from 9th Avenue" appeared on the cover of the New Yorker in March 1976. It has since become one of the most popular and recognisable covers in the magazine's history and it spawned countless parodies as every city from Boston to Omaha clamoured to make a version of their own. Steinberg is quoted in a 2001 New York Times article as having said that if he had received the proper royalties " I could have retired on this painting." Pacific Ventures, unknown
