Lynn Downey is a native California historian author and archivist. An early work presenting discoveries made in New Zealand, specifically in Auckland and Nelson, during the Austrian Imperial Novara Expedition. It includes two important lectures delivered by esteemed geologist and expedition leader Ferdinand von Hochstetter. A principal member of the expedition, Hochstetter was involved in its planning from the onset. His surveys were used in the making of the first geological map of New Zealand, created the bases for future geological research. The Novara Expedition (1857-1859) was the first large-scale scientific, around-the-world mission of the Austrian Imperial navy. In 1859, during the expedition, Hochstetter was funded by the government of New Zealand to make a rapid geological survey of the islands. Over 150 years later, his work is regarded as an authoritative primary source still today. the volume's content centers largely on Hochstetter's survey of Auckland, beginning with his lecture on the region's geology. Subjects further include its extinct volcanos, Lake Rotomahana and its hot springs [Te Tarata thermal springs], and three inlets on North Island - Whaingaroa [now known as Raglan], Aotea, and Kawhia. Approximately one quarter of the text is devoted to his geological work in the Province of Nelson.‎

‎Belle vue panoramique des côtes d'Honolulu sur l'île d'Oahu dans l'archipel des îles Hawaï, dessinée par Mesnard et lithographiée par Thierry et Sabatier. Elle est issue du Voyage autour du monde sur la frégate la Vénus, pendant les années 1836-1839, de du Petit-Thouars. Capitaine de vaisseau en 1836, du Petit-Thouars réalisa un tour du monde sur la frégate la Vénus, faisant successivement escale aux îles Canaries, au Brésil, au Chili, au Kamtchatka, au Mexique, en Polynésie, en Australie, et à la Réunion, avant de regagner Brest en juin 1839. De retour en France, il conseilla au gouvernement l'annexion des îles Marquises et fut promu contre-amiral et commandant des forces navales d'Océanie. Son voyage implanta la France en Polynésie. Très bel exemplaire.‎

‎Très rare et beau plan de la rade de Papeete, sur l'île de Tahiti, en Polynésie Française. Il a été levé et dressé en 1838 par Louis Urbain Dortet de Tessan, ingénieur hydrographe de la Marine, à bord de la frégate la Vénus, sous les ordres de du Petit-Thouars, capitaine du vaisseau. Il a été gravé par Michel, et est issu du très rare atlas hydrographique de la relation de voyage ayant pour titre Voyage autour du monde sur la frégate la Vénus, pendant les années 1836-1839, publiée entre 1840 et 1845. Y sont nommés la Pointe (cap) de l'Est et la Pointe de l'Ouest, l'île de la Reine ou Motu-Uta, et l'île Aouna, qui semble avoir disparu aujourd'hui. La carte est accompagnée d'un texte d'avertissement et d'une table de réduction des mètres en brasses et en pieds. Elle est illustrée de quatre profils côtiers de l'entrée de la baie et de l'île de Tahiti. Cachet imprimé du Dépôt général de la Marine figurant une ancre. La Vénus fit escale à Papeete du 27 août au 16 septembre 1838. Capitaine de vaisseau, du Petit-Thouars quitta Brest en 1836, pour une expédition dans le Pacifique à bord de la frégate la Vénus. L'objectif principal était de protéger les intérêts de la France dans la région, mais aussi de prendre des renseignements sur l'industrie baleinière, et d'acquérir toutes les informations possibles concernant l'état réel des différents pays visités. Les observateurs scientifiques de la Vénus étaient des officiers de marine français qui feraient des observations hydrographiques et astronomiques et collecteraient des spécimens d'histoire naturelle dans les pays visités. L'expédition fit diverses escales, notamment au Brésil, autour du cap Horn, à Callao au Pérou, à Hawaï, à Tahiti, en Nouvelle-Zélande, au Kamtchatka et en Alaska, puis longea les côtes de l'Amérique vers le sud. Elle repartit vers Brest en juin 1839. De retour en France, du Petit-Thouars défendit l'idée d'une présence française en Océanie, et conseilla au gouvernement de Louis-Philippe l'annexion des îles Marquises. Il fut promu contre-amiral et commandant des forces navales d'Océanie. En 1841, conformément aux instructions reçues, il occupa l'archipel des Marquises. En 1842, il fit signer un traité de protectorat à la reine Pomaré de Tahiti en 1842, puis il annexa Tahiti au nom de la France. Cette annexion implanta la France en Polynésie. Bel exemplaire.
