Douglas Justice William O.
OF MEN AND MOUNTAINS Association Copy
NY: Harper & Brothers 1950. Book. Good. Hardcover. Signed Association. Early printing. Cloth. 338pp. Glossary. Front endpapers map of the Cascade Mountains & rear endpapers map of the Wallowa Mountains of Oregon. This copy signed on the half-title by Kitty F. Nelson and Jack Nelson friends of the author and authors of their own book which was introduced by Douglas. Jack Nelson also signed page 213 the first page of Douglas' chapter about him. Nelson was the "gatetender" of the Bumping Lake reservoir built by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1910 and he retired in 1946. On the verso of the dedication page is a list in ink of five words four of them written in two forms the English word and beside it the Indian word. Thus: Tahoma / Rainier; Loowit / St. Helens; Wyeast / Hood; Klickitat / Adams. Plus "kinnikinick." A few pages have browning from laid in newspaper clippings and there is some browning near gutters of the endpapers. A couple of leaves have a paper clip indentation at the top. Although not signed by Douglas this is nevertheless a possibly unique association copy. Covers with some wear at the tips slightly browned at the edges. We grade it good but it probably deserves a vg. The dj is chipped and is fair only. 1 1/2" x 1" chip on front panel near backstrip; closed tear on back panel and other tears & lesser chips. Douglas the famous U. S. Supreme Court justice was highly praised for writing this wonderfully descriptive and warm memoir of his life associate with the Pacific Northwest and the Cascades. DOWNEY LYNN
A Short History Of Sonoma
University of Nevada Press Reno: 2013. Softcover. Brand new book. Sonoma is one of Northern California's most desirable places to live and a popular tourist destination combining small-town charm a colorful past and its current role as the hub of one of the world's premier wine-producing regions. A Short History of Sonoma traces its past from the Native American peoples who first inhabited the valley proceeding through the establishment of a mission by Spanish priests the Bear Flag Revolt that began California's movement to become part of the United States the foundation of what would become a celebrated wine industry and its role today as the center of a sophisticated and highly envied food and wine culture. The book also addresses such topics as the development of local ranching and businesses and of transportation links to San Francisco that helped to make Sonoma and the surrounding Valley of the Moon a popular location for summer homes and resorts. It discusses the role of the nearby hot springs in attracting visitors and permanent residents including people seeking cures for various ailments. There are also accounts of some of the famous people who lived in or near Sonoma and helped establish its mystique including Mexican general Mariano Vallejo the town's first leader; Hungarian winemaker Agoston Haraszthy who first saw the region's potential for producing superior wines; and writers Jack London and M. F. K. Fisher who made their homes in the Valley of the Moon drawn by its beauty and bucolic lifestyle. A Short History of Sonoma is generously illustrated with vintage photographs. It is a delightful account of one of America's most charming towns and its evolution from rowdy frontier settlement to the paragon of sophisticated living that it is today. Lynn Downey is a native California historian author and archivist. Dr. F. von Hochstetter; Dr. A. Petermann
The Geology of New Zealand: In Explanation of the Geographical and Topographical Atlas of New Zealand - Rare NZ Imprint.
An English translation by Dr. C. F. Fisher, from the Scientific Publications of the Novara Expedition, comprising important and fascinating observations and survey work by German-Austrian geologist Ferdinand von Hochstetter at the onset of British settlement in the region. 8vo. 113 pages, plus table of contents, title page. Red cloth boards titled in gilt to front. Volume measures approximately 14 x 21 cm. Faint blemish to boards, otherwise very good condition, clean and bright. An early work presenting discoveries made in New Zealand, specifically in Auckland and Nelson, during the Austrian Imperial Novara Expedition. It includes two important lectures delivered by esteemed geologist and expedition leader Ferdinand von Hochstetter. A principal member of the expedition, Hochstetter was involved in its planning from the onset. His surveys were used in the making of the first geological map of New Zealand, created the bases for future geological research. The Novara Expedition (1857-1859) was the first large-scale scientific, around-the-world mission of the Austrian Imperial navy. In 1859, during the expedition, Hochstetter was funded by the government of New Zealand to make a rapid geological survey of the islands. Over 150 years later, his work is regarded as an authoritative primary source still today. the volume's content centers largely on Hochstetter's survey of Auckland, beginning with his lecture on the region's geology. Subjects further include its extinct volcanos, Lake Rotomahana and its hot springs [Te Tarata thermal springs], and three inlets on North Island - Whaingaroa [now known as Raglan], Aotea, and Kawhia. Approximately one quarter of the text is devoted to his geological work in the Province of Nelson.
