U.S. and Mexican Forces in the Border Wars 1914–1916 Photo Archive
1916. U.S. and Mexican military activity during the Mexican Border Wars Photo archive ca. 1914–1916. Archive of 19 photographs primarily real photo postcards and one tintype most measuring 3.5" x 5.5". Several with captions and one postcard with lengthy manuscript letter on verso dated September 27 1916 from McAllen Texas. The archive offers an extensive visual record of the U.S.–Mexico Border War capturing both staged and candid views of soldiers battle damage executions and occupation scenes. Several specifically show the U.S. occupation of Veracruz in April 1914 including “The 5th Brigade U.S. Army Commanded by General Funston taking Possession of Vera Cruz April 30th 1914†and “Federal Mexican Soldiers Firing from Street Corner First Day of Battle April 21st.†Other images depict U.S. forces in drill—“U.S. Soldiers Hiking in the Sand Hills around Vera Cruz Mexico†“U.S. Army at Vera Cruz Mexico†and “Nebraska’s Battalionâ€â€”while Mexican federal troops are shown “Serving Machine Guns†and assembled “for Grand Review Vera Cruz Mex.†A striking RPPC labeled “Firing Squad Mexico†shows six riflemen in action the condemned kneeling at water’s edge; another titled “Adobe House Destroyed by Artillery in Mexico†depicts a bullet-riddled façade and mounted troops. Panoramic troop movements are documented in “Mexican Infantry entering Juárez Mex.†and “Scene at Vera Cruz Mexico during Battle of April 21st and 22nd†the latter showing prone soldiers in firing positions. Also includes 4 hand-colored patriotic “sweetheart†postcards sent by soldiers to loved ones with sentimental captions such as “Don’t Forget the One You Left Behind†The sole tintype shows an American soldier in campaign hat and his service uniform posed before a canvas tent. One postcard written from McAllen Texas dated September 27 1916 in which the sender reports: “Still here! & it’s hot! but I have a nice job and plenty to do. I love it and I’m sure you would enjoy it. It is a splendid experience and I am proud of the N.G. The flag is O.K. in our hands.†These images emerge from the period of heightened tensions along the U.S.–Mexico border between 1910 and 1919 when the Mexican Revolution cross-border raids and incidents such as the Tampico Affair and the Battle of Veracruz prompted President Wilson to order military intervention. The archive illustrate both the violence of the U.S. incursion—street fighting artillery destruction firing squads—and the symbolic aspects of military occupation from parades to formal reviews. Light handling wear to several cards occasional corner creases one with small loss to margin; tintype with light surface spotting but good clarity. Overall very good condition. unknown

1916. Photographic archive of American Troops along the US-Mexican Border during the Border War ca. 1916. Approximately 22 original silver gelatin prints most measuring 3.25" x 5.5" with several larger images. Candid photographs some printed on postcard stock others produced in field conditions. Most very good with minor edge wear and handling creases. An extraordinary visual archive of U.S. Army operations along the Mexican border during the height of the Border War ca. 1910-1919 most likely dating to the years immediately surrounding the 1916 Punitive Expedition into Mexico led by General John J. Pershing. The photographs document U.S. cavalry and artillery units encamped in arid terrain interacting with field artillery mounted patrols and supply convoys. <br /> <br /> The enlisted men wear M1912 wool field shirts campaign hats wrap puttees and riding boots—standard issue for mounted cavalry units of the U.S. Army during the Mexican Expedition. One soldier unidentified appears throughout. We see him on horseback near monuments and with his fellow army troops. Our soldier is pictured at the Continental Divide with one stone marker reading "Continental Divide Elevation 6900 ft Tombstone 25 Miles." Another nearby photo shows our soldier "Road constructed by Prison Labor A.D 1913-1914 "Constructed by Prison Labor". Notably artillery units in the background of a few photos utilize heavy horse-drawn caissons to maneuver large field guns including one 3-inch M1902 field gun visible in close-up. The archive includes multiple views of cavalrymen posing on horseback or alongside artillery equipment. We see tent camps smoke stacks rows of supply convoys and horse and mule trains all across an arid desert landscape. A striking image of a soldier standing beside an artillery piece with spoked wooden wheels and riveted barrel likely a 3.2-inch field gun. This collection constitutes a rare unfiltered view of U.S. border militarization westward logistics and cavalry life on the frontier during one of the most fraught chapters in U.S.-Mexico relations. San Antonio 1916. Near Fine. Ten original photographs plus two real photo postcards. Most 3 x 5 inches one smaller. Occasional very minor wear. Images generally crisp and clean. A collection of ten photographs that depict activities of F Troop of the 13th U.S. Cavalry Regiment on the border with Mexico in the vicinity of Columbus New Mexico during the mid-1910s. The regiment was assigned to the Army's El Paso border patrol in 1912 and eventually became headquartered in Columbus. In New Mexico the unit's patrol area consisted of approximately sixty-five miles between Noria and Hermanas; F Troop was stationed in the field near the tiny town of Hachita. The regiment played a key role in defending against Pancho Villa's 1916 raid on Columbus and took part in Pershing's Punitive Expedition which served as retaliation for the attack. The images here show members of the troop in training heading out on patrol in their field camp at attention during inspection and horsing around. The versos of most photographs are stamped "Fox Tone Print Fox Co. San Antonio." Also present are two photo postcards showing I Troop of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry which was also briefly stationed at El Paso. A nice group. unknown books
