‎Pituffik Space Base formerly Thule Air Base Archive of 15 photos documenting the construction of the temporary Port of Thule. Circa 1951‎

‎No Place: No publisher. Unbound. Very Good. 8 by 10 inch glossy photos. No publisher place or date. The photographs are loosely contained in a manila folder with the name of Colonel L.B. de Long typed on it. Affixed to the interior is a copy of a letter addressed to someone working for an insurance company dated September 9 1952. This letter suggests meeting a John Mead and Colonel L.B. deLong who apparently handled "lots of interesting towage and construction projects in Alaska Greenland etc." The photographs are primarily shots of the pier that would make the Port of Thule being constructed depicting metal pipes platforms etc. with some icebergs visible as well as Dundas Mountain in the background. One shot depicts two former Navy vessels which may have been used as temporary housing for workers. They are the USNS General Stuart Heintzelman and the USNS General A W Greely. One photo depicts a ship moored and another depicts a ship just offshore. Pituffik Space Base Thule Air Base was originally built in 1951 and is the northernmost US military installation. It has gained more interest recently due to a US president's inane obsession with Greenland. The website icyseas . org indicates that the Port of Thule is the northernmost deep water port in the world and was constructed in three weeks. It was meant to be a temporary port but is still in use today. It also appears from that website that the pier depicted in these photos is sometimes referred to as the deLong Pier. These are from an executive of a very large international insurance firm name of owner and firm withheld for privacy. The owner was a highly placed executive in an insurance company and travelled throughout the world extensively. They were active in politics through donations and fundraising and it appears their family was friendly with the Roosevelts especially Eleanor Roosevelt. The previous owner's work for the insurance company led them to meet with various heads of state worldwide including US government officials. Some of the people associated with this firm were also involved in World War II activities including financing the Flying Tigers in China as well as work for the OSS using knowledge gained from insurance work. While we have not found any direct connection to intelligence work by this owner their ties to those who did are strong. Photos in VERY GOOD condition with minor toning and general curling. ‎Prise de la Grenade. Le comte d'Estaing - 4 Juillet 1779.‎

‎[Paris, 1820].

Bel exemplaire.‎

‎Refugee Insurance Proposals relating to the Refugee Act of 1953. Archive of typed and mechanically reproduced Letters‎

‎No Place: No publisher 1956. Unbound. Good. Various places and dates. Dates range from April 25 1956 to June 27 1956. 14 leaves printed on single sides only. It appears most are copies of originals but a few may be original as well. All these letters stem from a proposal letter written by Ambassador Whiting Willauer to his friend and insurance executive from whose estate these came. Willauer mentions his troubles with some Chinese refugees he sponsored which made him ponder the possibility for some sort of insurance for sponsors of refugees to cover financial losses in case the refugees are not able to fulfill their obligations stipulated in the Refugee Act of 1953. The letters are between other US insurance executives pondering options and feasibility with the eventual conclusion that the proposal was not practical. The act itself was meant to accommodate 200000 refugees affected by communism. The earliest letter is from US Ambassador Whiting Willauer on "The Foreign Service of the United States of America" letterhead and apparently written from Honduras where Willauer was serving at the time. Notably Willauer along with Claire Chennault established the Civilian Air Transport Company in China in 1946 selling it to the CIA in 1950 although not resigning from the company until 1954. At this time he became ambassador to Honduras and worked directly with the CIA in Guatemala in support of their operation to overthrow its government led by Jacobo Arbenz Guzman see Wikipedia for previous information-or misinformation. Willauer's letter does bear a signature but we have not authenticated it in any way. While we have not found any direct connection to intelligence work by this owner their ties to those who did are strong. GOOD condition. Letters mounted by metal clip in a manila folder. Some wrinkling to the letters with a few handwritten notes to some of them. No publisher unknown‎

‎Rules and Regulations of the Charitable Fire Society Incorporated November 1820‎

‎No Place: John Mann Printer. Wraps. Good. No place or date perhaps Dover NH circa 1827 according to New Hampshire Historical Society information. Plain blue wraps. 12 pp. Rules and regulations for a private firefighting organization made up of community members in Dover New Hampshire. As Dover did not have a city supported firefighting unit social groups were formed to handle the duties. The first one was formed in 1795 and this appears to be one of several others formed after that. The piece outlines rules of governance but also outlines duties of its members including keeping two leather buckets and bags at their residences and responding to fires as soon as possible. Like any good "society" in the 1800s it appears this had a secret "watch" word that members were to give when asked for. Since there were several organizations in operation at the time rivalries were developed and it is possible this secret word kept people honest. A roster of members is included at the end with some names handwritten. GOOD condition. Rear cover and last leaf with a one inch jagged tear at the upper for edge with some associated creasing. Minor ink staining and soiling to the covers. Some dampstaining present to the wrappers with minor soiling and uneven fading. A few tick marks in the text. John Mann, Printer unknown‎

‎Student Sewing Stitch Sampler Booklet. 1914‎

‎No Place: No publisher 1914. Wraps. Poor. Disbound leaves roughly 8 by 7 inches with a cardstock front cover bearing a label with the student's name and year Marion Conaway 1914. 14 leaves with 12 of the 14 containing a piece of fabric that displays an example of various stitches mostly along hems or seams. The fabric is mounted by metal fasteners. Laid in is a certificate issued in 1918 from the Victory Girls and the United War Work Campaign certifying that Ms. Conaway paid a dollar toward the United War Work Campaign and was deemed an official Victory Girl. This campaign was created as a way for people in the US to support troops during World War I. Presumably the booklet was done for school demonstrating the variety of sewing and stitching techniques that was being taught. POOR condition. Booklet falling apart with all leaves detached and cover detached. Lacking a rear cover. The paper mountings are toned and brittle with some chipping and loss along the edges. The fabrics are clean although some are folded due to mishandling. No publisher unknown‎

Honorary members of Progressive Numbers are listed including Rev. J.A. Gregg Richard B. Harrison and Clarence Cameron White. List of last names and first initials of 12 members also present. ‎Vernacular Photo Album including Anti Suffrage Photos Brant Rock Photos Provincetown Photos etc. Circa 1910-1920‎

‎No Place: No publisher. Hard Cover. Very Good. Oblong format old photo album. 30 leaves with photographs on both sides. Each page averages around 10 photographs per page so we estimate there are around 600 photographs total give or take a few. This photo album belonged to Lillian F. Jones nee Geary and depicts her friends and family at a variety of locations. Names of many of the people were added underneath at a much later date as indicated at the front of the album. Two handwritten leaves provide a "Who's Who" of the people included mentioning their relationships to others etc. Of particular note perhaps is one page devoted to photos of several young women in suffragette "costume" and holding small hand signs that say "votes for women" or "we vote next year." One of the latter also has the initials "NIT" in quotes. Another woman holds a sign reading "Officer Call a Cop." This was the title of a 1917 short film although we could find no reason to associate this with suffrage for or against. In the images the women are adopting clownish poses and it appears they have purposely blacked out a tooth or two and added moles. Because of this we feel that these women may be anti-suffrage. One photograph depicts a young man pulling on the hat of a young woman holding a sign. Other photographs depict young men and women swimming or posing at the beach at Brant Rock in Massachusetts. Several other pages chronicle two young women apparently visiting Provincetown Massachusetts swimming etc. Other photos are of Cushing Maine etc. Photo album is in VERY GOOD condition. Very little wear to the photos. Most are glued in and a few have detached. Minor toning to the photos. Photo quality is good and the shots are well done as is the layout. No publisher unknown‎

‎W.C.T.U. Women's Christian Temperance Union Rhode Island Silk Ribbon Commemorating an Event Held Sept. 28-30th 1886‎

‎Rhode Island: WCTU Rhode Island Publisher 1886. Unbound. Very Good. Cream colored silk ribbon with purple printing and fringed ends. 6 ¾ by 2 1/8 inches. A ribbon issued by the Women's Christian Temperance Union WCTU of Rhode Island reading "Our Jubilee Year April 7th. Praise ye the Lord. W.C.T.U. of Rhode Island. Sept. 28-30th 1886." Presumably issued for its annual convention. The Women's Christian Temperance Union was founded in Ohio in 1874 with the principal goal of promoting temperance through religious moral and other methods. It eventually expanded its mission to include social reform such as suffrage child labor etc. The Rhode Island chapter was successful in helping to pass a prohibition law in the state in 1886 although it was repealed in 1889. ‎World War I Hospital/Medical Worker Diary. 1918 France. In a Daily Reminder Calendar for 1918‎

‎No Place: No publisher 1918. Cloth. Good. World War I Hospital/Medical Worker Diary. 1918 France. In a Daily Reminder Calendar for 1918. Red cloth. 365 pp. one for each day of the year. No name/author given. Some entries rather faded and most written in pencil. Handwriting is sometimes illegible. We speculate the author may have been an officer in the AEF as many of their entries refer to daily inspections and they reference an officer training drill in one entry. Many entries also refer to lieutenants majors and other officers although very rarely giving names instead using a single initial. It appears they were part of the AEF's hospital unit with mention of being at a frontline ambulance medical facility run by French forces and called Ambulance de Bois Roger see Feb. 12. First entry for January 1st indicates the author was in Langres France with the AEF American Expeditionary Force and mentions that school is out and he took a walk. They describe waiting for orders eventually being moved to Liffol-le-grand and Camp Hospital 18 for the month of January. By Early February entries are from Field Hospital 101. A hand drawn map/plan of Ambulance de Bois Roger appears on February 12. They describe setting up a triage with plan. On February 17 "considerable artillery to the east" is mentioned and the author as well as their going to an abandoned trench on the ridge. German biplanes are referred to using the French term avion boche. Boche was a derogatory term for Germans and the word appears off and on in entries going forward including March 8th where it states "Some boche in the air." They also mention that two were killed. By April the author is back at Camp Hospital 18 another map/plan of the facility appears and Field Hospital 101. Entries pretty much cease by April 23 with a few scattered entries short a few long" through the rest of the book. In general the diarist discusses basic day to day operations at the various medical facilities as well as planning interactions with others basic orders etc. GOOD condition. Residue/staining on the front cover. General fading. Minor soiling and edgewear. Some bumping. No publisher unknown‎
