For three-quarters of a century from the first visit by the renowned Eusebio Francisco Kino in 1691 until the Jesuit Expulsion in 1767 the difficult process of replacing one culture with another�the heart of the Spanish mission system�went on at Guevavi. Yet all but the initial years presided over by Father Kino have been forgotten. Drawing upon archival materials in Mexico Spain and the United States�including accounts by the missionaries themselves and the surviving pages of the Guevavi record books�Kessell brings to life those forgotten years and forgotten men who struggled to transform a native rancher�a into an ordered mission community. Of the eleven Black Robes who resided at Guevavi between 1701 and 1767 only a few are well known to history. It would inexpensively fill out a set or stand alone for those interested in the region's history. Stephens though he died young was very active and accurate in rediscovering the Mayan civilization and the engravings herein are astounding. Photos on request.</p> Harper & Brothers hardcover

A collection of essays and poems offering advice and wisdom pertaining to marriage and happy relationships. GOOD condition. Heavy fading to the covers especially along the spine. Minor soiling some scuffing and a small stain present to the upper left corner of the front cover. Extremities bumped and scuffed. First endpaper torn with the lower corner missing. Child's doodling in crayon and pencil to the first and last endpapers and inside covers. Text block solid. Some chipping/tearing to the center fore edge. A few corners creased. J.
