He lived most of his childhood in Holland with his parents but spent time with his uncle in Scotland. His years in Surinam, on the northern coast of South America, were characterized by encounters with African slaves and colonial planters, as well as the exotic local flora and fauna. A short work discussing the history and meaning of the circular designs painted on barns in Pennsylvania mostly on ones owned by those of German descent. The author recounts the religious and folkloric meanings behind the symbols dispelling notions that they were painted to ward off witches. GOOD condition. Moderate offsetting toning and foxing along the front cover spine and top edge. Minor browning foxing and soiling to the rear cover. Minor bumping and creasing along the extremities.
