Traduction de François Soulès. Seconde édition, revue et corrigée; Sabin (n° 21902). Edition en partie originale car elle contient deux chapitres (pp. 473 à 515) qui évoquent Toussaint Louverture et des événements survenus à Saint-Domingue entre 1794 et novembre 1802, époque de la mort du Général Leclerc. On y trouve notamment la retranscription de deux lettres de Bonaparte de la fin de l'année 1801 ""Aux habitants de Saint-Dominque"" et ""Au citoyen Toussaint-Louverture"". Ces augmentations ne figuraient pas dans la première édition traduite en 1801, ni dans l'édition anglaise par Bryan Edwards, mort en 1800. Les pp. 523 à 534 sont mal chiffrées de 480 à 490 ce qui a parfois laissé croire que la collation était semblable à la première édition et n'a pas permis de remarquer les augmentations. Très rare. The history of the 6th Massachusetts in the Spanish-American War is unique in that its campaign was almost a bloodless one the absence of battles and the few months it was in the field rendering its experiences different in kind and degree from those regiments which were in the Civil War almost as many yars and even for its sister regiments in Cuba in '98. And while the following account is written with a full appreciation of the seemingly insuramountable diffculites overcome by the War Department in an incredibly short space of time in addition to the necessary hardships of army life and it not intended in any sense as a "lament" there is that to record of interst not only to the regiment itself but to its friends." This includes potentially uneducated voters and the outcome in the presidential election. Elliott appears to be in favor of immigration and against curtailing it viewing it from a businessman's perspective ie. 'The world needs ditch diggers too' line from Caddyshack. This discussion also wanders into legislation against businesses wherein he appears to be in favor of limiting laws against businesses. The Lotos Club is a Gentlemen's Club in New York City founded in 1870 and known for its artistic literary and scholarly atmosphere. Mark Twain among other notables was a member. GOOD condition. Pamphlet lacking any wraps that were originally issued. 32pp. An address given at the consecration of the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Chelsea/Malden area of Massachusetts on the outskirts of Boston. While speaking in general terms on burials and the important ceremonial and religious aspects of it Ellis also speaks of historical examples of dealing with the dead including mummification in ancient Egypt funeral pyres in ancient Greece and Rome and the tradition of burials at churchyards. While speaking in general terms he mentions in brief the process of mummification speculating on its significance to Egyptian culture while also alluding to the then current fad of displaying recently disinterred mummies. He also discusses some of the symbolism present on tombstones both in his time and colonial American times. With a printing of the lyrics of two hymns written for the occasion by J.H. Clinch and H.W. Fuller. GOOD condition. Uneven soiling browning fading and minor staining to the exterior pages with some creasing at the corners. Small tear to the front fore edge. Minor foxing. A speech reflecting on the origin of the United States of America asserting that the original colonists were in a sense 'free men' due to their industriousness moral character and hopes to establish a new life from that of the one in England. Emerson reflects on the growing sentiment for independence as well as the Revolutionary War and establishment of the U.S. government including the philosophy and principles behind its establishment. William Emerson was a Unitarian minister in the Boston area as well as the father of Ralph Waldo Emerson. GOOD condition. Remains of binding present along the spine. There is also a photograph of the old high school building which apparently was last in use during the year this annual covers 1924. The new school building is described.
