Although his own plans for the independence of the Spanish American colonies failed he is regarded as a forerunner of Sim�n Bol�var who during the Spanish American wars of independence successfully liberated a vast portion of South America. Miranda led a romantic and adventurous life. An idealist he developed a visionary plan to liberate and unify all of Spanish America but his own military initiatives on behalf of an independent Spanish America ended in 1812. He was handed over to his enemies and four years later in 1816 died in a Spanish prison. "Indian trade silver is a fascinating and little-known part of our cultural heritage - a product of the interaction between two profoundly different cultures during the European exploration of North America. Originating in the early diplomatic gifts of medals to friendly Indians the distribution of silver became widespread during the height of the fur trade 1760 to 1821. Silver ornaments designed specifically for the fur trade included brooches gorgets armbands legbands earrings nose-rings crosses and headbands. A travelling exhibition of over two hundred of these ornaments was organized by the National Museum of Man Ottawa and this book was written to accompany it. Previously known only to scholars and collectors this unusual art form has now become accessible to a much wider public. The silver ornaments created for the fur trade were produced by both European and colonial silversmiths but the Iroquois began to make similar pieces for their people after silver ceased to be available through the fur trade. Although the craft died out it has recently been revived and the exhibition includes many examples of modern Iroquois workmanship. Some pieces are based on traditional trade-silver patterns but others are of the silversmiths' own design. The book illustrates and describes all the silver chosen for the exhibition from museums in Canada and the United States. With a few in text illustrations as well as several full page illustrated plates. A history of military action in the United States from the Revolutionary War and including actions in Africa the Tippecanoe War the War of 1812 the Black Hawk's War and the Seminole Wars. Unfortunately in POOR condition. MISSING two front endpapers with the illustrated half-title DETACHED and laid in. The binding and interior hinges are very shaky with cracking in several sections including at the front and rear cover hinges beginning to separate as well in those locales. Many of the signatures are beginning to come loose although all are presently intact albeit weakly. Heavy fading to the covers with scattered spotted discoloration minor spots of staining and minor to moderate soiling. Spine sunned. Minor rippling to the cloth on the rear cover. Some scuffing bumping and fraying along the extremities especially to the head and foot of the spine. Minor scattered soiling and foxing to the interior with a tear present to the lower corners of pages 192 and 193 resulting in minor loss of text. Dampstaining present to the half-title. Sabin 26024. Another volume was issued that covered the events of 1862. GOOD condition. Moderate scuffing and fading to the cloth with heavy scuffing along the extremities. This has resulted in the cloth being frayed and worn through along the edges with a few areas of minor loss including the tips of the spine and along the hinges. Minor soiling. Parker was considered controversial for his criticism of many aspects of the bible including miracles as well as for his ardent anti-slavery stance in which he advocated violating the Fugitive Slave Act. Parker was indicted but not convicted of harboring fugitive slaves. Octavius Frothingham was an American clergyman known for his strong abolitionist stance as well as his support for Darwin and his theories. FAIR/GOOD condition.
