Philadelphia: George W. Mentz. First Edition. Original Wraps. Poor. Philadelphia: no date but believed 1817. Published by George W. Mentz. Saddle stitched paper. No covers believed as issued. 32 pages including front cover and back cover. No pages appear to be missing from the interior although I am unsure if any are missing from the rear. OCLC details for this almanac mentions 36 pages. With a woodcut illustration of the anatomy of a man's body on relation to the constellations and the zodiac. Twelve months of astronomical almanac present along with several short articles one relating a robbery by a highwayman and his subsequent fate an article on poverty a cure for the bite of a mad dog an article on Rachel Baker who prays in her sleep among others. In POOR condition with heavy tattering to the extremities folding and creasing to the corners some ink dots to the front cover along with a few letters in script and a rectangular piece CUT AND MISSING from the front cover beneath the title. Pages are darkened but still readable. The almanac is still intact with no loose pages. Overall a seemingly scarce almanac in POOR condition. Photos available upon request. Not in Evans. George W. This number features several letters from Gideon Blackburn to Dr. Morse regarding the origin and progress of a religious mission to the Cherokee Indians. Apparently begun in 1790 Blackburn describes his efforts to educate the Cherokees with a slight condescending tone to their culture. Blackburn founded a ministry in Maryville Tennessee establishing two schools for Cherokee boys in the early 1800s in that area see Wikipedia. Also present is a sketch of the character of Samuel Moody further extracts from the diary of Reverend Ivory Hovey as well as a few theological/philosophical essays. The Piscataqua Evangelical Magazine ran for three volumes providing a publication venue for New Hampshire and Maine ministers and religious figures. Jager Company of Boston Massachusetts combining a mix of fonts type sizes and illustrations advertising windmills and a gas engine. Based on company histories this piece may be circa 1900 or a little later. The Fairbanks-Morse Company bought the successful Eclipse Windmill company in the 1890s eventually merging the two under the Fairbanks Morse and Co. name. VERY GOOD condition. General toning. Approximately 36 pages used in the book with many more unused. With a few envelopes of photo negatives some large in size. The scrapbook contains various identification and membership cards for Charles Palmer as well as items pertaining to his service in World War II. Serving as a private first class it appears Palmer was an Official War Photographer ID card present indicating such. Newsletters paper clippings meal cards and other paper ephemera associated with his service are present including a letter that indicates he was nominated or received a Soldier's Medal for his actions in documenting a ship that had exploded in a port. An official letter regarding his request to find the grave of a fellow fallen soldier is included as well as various military bulletins photos and newspaper clippings of people comics theater tickets and other related type of items from Italy etc. also present. Some of the 3x4 inch negatives appear to depict soldiers or military type scenes although this is hard to tell for certain while the rest of the negatives are portraits of people. VERY GOOD condition with minor fading and edgewear. Some fading and minor soiling to the slipcase. No Publisher unknown
