‎Cleveland Ohio U.S.A.: Cleveland Leader Publisher 1881. Original Wraps. Poor. Vol. 34 No. 263. Newspaper from Cleveland Ohio. 8pp. This issue from the home state of Garfield features several pages of news of the death of James Garfield who had died at 10:35pm the night before. Garfield died from complications due to being shot by a disgruntled political candidate. In POOR condition with heavy soiling and darkening to the outer pages. Moderate darkening and some scattered soiling to the interior. Some dark spotting and staining to the extremities with an area of heavy dampstaining in the upper center of the front page. Heavy chipping tearing and tattering along the extremities with a 2 by 2 inch area of loss of the newspaper at the upper center. This has resulted in minor loss of text at the edges of the interior as well as loss of the name of the newspaper on the front page. Half moon area of chewing present at the center left margin not affecting text. Chipping tattering and minor loss of the newspaper along the upper center folds. ‎No Place: No Publisher 1812. Pamphlet. Fair. Large pamphlet lacking any outer wraps. Pagination runs 241-288. A collection of essays on various subjects including religious philosophical literary and historical topics. Of note is two page piece on a Native American Indian prophet in Georgia a member of the Creek Indians who had predicted an earthquake and the arrival of a lamp in the west. The article asserts this was to rally the Creeks to battle against the white settlers and provides a bit of biographical background on the Native American prophet. This issue also prints the music and lyrics to a song "Content" written by Dr. G.K. Jackson an English organist at the King's Church who arrived in Boston in 1812 becoming an organist in several churches there. Jackson was a proponent of both instrumental and choral music Elson the National Music of America and Its Sources. Also in this issue is a work on agriculture and irrigation of farm lands discussing means of finding the best locations for channels and providing a diagram for building a level. A theological/scientific discussion on the origin of the Earth is also featured. FAIR condition. Moderate to heavy uneven browning to the paper with dampstaining to the upper half and to the lower corner along the fore edge. Scattered minor to moderate foxing throughout with the exterior dampstains affecting the first half of the interior. No covers believed as issued. 32 pages including front cover and back cover. No pages appear to be missing from the interior although I am unsure if any are missing from the rear. OCLC details for this almanac mentions 36 pages. With a woodcut illustration of the anatomy of a man's body on relation to the constellations and the zodiac. Twelve months of astronomical almanac present along with several short articles one relating a robbery by a highwayman and his subsequent fate an article on poverty a cure for the bite of a mad dog an article on Rachel Baker who prays in her sleep among others. In POOR condition with heavy tattering to the extremities folding and creasing to the corners some ink dots to the front cover along with a few letters in script and a rectangular piece CUT AND MISSING from the front cover beneath the title. Pages are darkened but still readable. The almanac is still intact with no loose pages. Overall a seemingly scarce almanac in POOR condition. Photos available upon request. Not in Evans. George W. This number features several letters from Gideon Blackburn to Dr. Morse regarding the origin and progress of a religious mission to the Cherokee Indians. Apparently begun in 1790 Blackburn describes his efforts to educate the Cherokees with a slight condescending tone to their culture. Blackburn founded a ministry in Maryville Tennessee establishing two schools for Cherokee boys in the early 1800s in that area see Wikipedia. Also present is a sketch of the character of Samuel Moody further extracts from the diary of Reverend Ivory Hovey as well as a few theological/philosophical essays. Apparently Tyng was found guilty of the offence of officiating within the joint parochial cure of two Presbyters of a neighboring Diocese in opposition of their wishes see page 22 of the pamphlet. FAIR condition. LACKING the rear wrap. Large dampstains affecting the piece throughout. Scattered foxing and minor soiling with a few small stains present. A few stray pencil marks to the front wrap.
