‎La traite des Africains noirs datait déjà de plus d'un siècle lorsque, de 1625 à 1650, les colons français s'établirent aux Antilles, à la Guyane et l'île Bourbon. Ils en adoptèrent presque aussitôt la pratique. Elle allait durer un siècle et demi pour Haïti, appelé alors Saint-Domingue, et deux cents ans pour la Guadeloupe et la Martinique. L'ouvrage d'Antoine Gisler apporte un éclairage très précis sur ce que fut, dans ses aspects spécifiques, l'esclavage des Noirs dans les possessions françaises du XVIe au XIXe siècle. La vie quotidienne des esclaves, les conditions de travail, le comportement des maîtres, les pratiques de répression y sont décrites et racontées avec la précision qu'a rendu possible une longue enquête historique. La contribution originale de cet ouvrage est d'exposer amplement les éléments institutionnels et juridiques qui, autour du Code Noir (1685), furent progressivement mis en place pour tenter de contrôler et d'humaniser le système esclavagiste. A. Gisler montre que le pouvoir civil aussi bien que le pouvoir religieux en la personne des missionnaires furent l'un et l'autre pris dans l'engrenage de l'institution et l'acceptèrent massivement, que seules des minorités surent réagir et en contester les fondements. — "Réédition d'un ouvrage classique, qui s'ouvre par un rappel sur la théorie de l'esclavage dans la doctrine de l'Eglise depuis Saint Thomas d'Aquin. Le Code Noir fournit un cadre théorique définissant les obligations des maîtres et les conditions de l'affranchissement. En regard, G. décrit la condition matérielle et morale de l'esclave. L'intérêt de l'ouvrage réside surtout dans l'analyse du fonctionnement des pouvoirs civils et religieux. Il montre comment l'autorité royale est en fait neutralisée par les planteurs, tandis que l'action moralisatrice du clergé se heurte à leur toute puissance. Le Code Noir devint ainsi un instrument oppressif particulièrement efficace. Ce livre de sociologie juridique, très documenté, est bien plus riche que les études comparables de Tardieu, Goveia et Klein, conduites sur d'autres îles de la Caraïbe, Cuba et la Jamaïque principalement." Nommé député aux Etats-Généraux par les électeurs de Saint-Domingue où il avait des propriétés, Gouy se prononça pour des idées progressistes ; il prit une part active aux discussions sur les Colonies et demanda dès 1790 l'abolition de l'esclavage et l'émancipation des Noirs. Mais, dès 1792, effrayé des dangers que l'affranchissement des noirs pouvait faire courir aux colons et à lui-même, il changea d'opinion, combattit les Amis des noirs, établit un projet dans lequel il réclame la subordination des esclaves et la traite comme garanties de la propriété des colons. Pamphlet disbound from a larger work. 20 10 pp. Two parts of this report chronicling a gunfight and minor uprising of Cherokee Indians in western Arkansas surrounding the arrest and subsequent trial for murder of Ezekiel Proctor. Proctor was a citizen of the Cherokee Nation by birth and his arrest for murder of a Cherokee woman from a prominent Cherokee family. This is now known as the Goingsnake Massacre. Proctor had killed Polly Beck due to her associations with a white man. The trial was held in Cherokee tribal courts due to treaties with the US government. The US afraid Proctor would be acquitted sent marshals to the trial to arrest Proctor. During the trial US marshals attacked the schoolhouse where it was held with seven marshals killed among others. Smith refuting Smith's claims that Greene is a 'scoundrel and coward' as well as a 'liar.' Greene then calls into question the character of Smith as well as his political career while at the same time correcting misinformation about his Greene's own life. This exchange appears to be the result of financial problems of H.W. Greene and his time as editor of the Eastern Argus involving loans or potential loans from Smith to Greene. Greene alleges Smith did not like Greene due to his refusal of publishing a puff piece on Smith. With many asides casting aspersions on the financial and political career of Smith. Francis Ormond Jonathan Smith was a New Hampshire born Maine politician and lawyer perhaps best known for his role in assisting Samuel B. Morse in developing and introducing the electric telegraph. Smith provided financial backing as well as counsel to Morse and financed the establishment of several early telegraph lines although financial disputes with Morse and other financial problems led to Smith's failure in those endeavors Wikipedia. ‎Très rare et belle carte de l'île de Saint-Domingue, dressée par l'ingénieur P.L. Griwtonn. Dressée en 1801, elle montre les routes principales et les divisions après que Toussaint Louverture ait envahi la partie espagnole de Saint-Domingue. Il divisa alors l'île en cinq départements. Mais son contrôle sur la partie espagnole s'avéra de courte durée. En juin 1802, il fut capturé par l'armée française et déporté en France. Les contours des parties française et espagnole sont aquarellés, en jaune la partie française, en violet la partie espagnole. Le liseré rouge au milieu de l'île indique les anciennes limites entre la partie française et la partie espagnole. La partie espagnole fut réunie à la France par le traité de Bâle conclu avec l'Espagne le 22 juillet 1795. La baie de Port-au-Prince est illustrée d'un navire. La carte montre également la partie est de Cuba, la partie ouest de Porto Rico, et une partie des Bahamas. Au bas de la carte se trouve un texte historique et descriptif de Saint-Domingue.
