Philadelphia: Louis A. Godey 1842. Book. Fair. Hardcover. 1st Edition. A custom rebinding from the period previous owners name done in gilt relief front center. She has written her name in pencil above the January title. Half bound in leather spine and tips balance in abrasioned marble paper. The tips spine extremities have major wear to the leather worn thru. The most notable flaw is at the hinging of the front board wholly compromised worn thru with age but held in place with the twine of the binding. The fisrt end sheet is completely loose at this point. Pastedowns and endsheets are quite foxed and the interior varies from almost no foxing to rather notably so. The only missing fashion illustration is form January August is either missing or was omitted no table of contents is in place for the second half of the year. 1st section 344 pages 2nd section 204 pages. The apparently hand tinted illustration are fascinating and while some foxing is present. hopefully it will not worsen with good storage and it does seem wholly age appropriate. Louis A. A narrative of its rise progress and decline with opinions of some medical gentlemen with respect to its origin. II. The manners in which the poor were relieved. III. A list of donations for relief of the sick and indigent. IV. A list of the names of the dead with occupations. This list also states if the deceased was African-American. V. A comparative view of the fever in the year 1798 with that of 1795. The nine unnumbered pages contain tables of information relating to the fever and its affliction of various groups of people. Contains letters from Dr. Samuel Mitchill and Richardson Underhill in regard to the origin of the fever. In GOOD condition. Remains of leather binding on the spine. The signature of a Samuel Dodge present at the top of the title page with a handwritten list in pencil of phrases on the rear blank endpaper. Page 85 with a number in ink with two numbers in faint pencil. Faint pen squiggle in the margin of page 97. Moderate toning to the paper with minor spotting and foxing scattered throughout. Rear endpaper with a few minor chips along its fore edge as well as bearing a diagonal crease. This crease affects the previous leaf as well. Sabin 30314. A speech by Republican Roswell Hart of New York cautioning against allowing Southern states back into the Union without first establishing that they will adhere to constitutional principles and establish in law rights for all regardless of race and color. Hart refers often to slavery taking a critical tone with the South and its manipulation of territories in an effort to perpetuate slavery. GOOD condition. Large faint dampstain affecting the left half of the piece. Moderate toning. Offsetting along the upper edge. Some soiling. Extremities chipped and torn with associated creasing. No Place: No Publisher. Hard Cover. Good. W.H.H. Walbridge compiler. Leather bound hardcover in homemade paper jacket with handwritten title. 192 pp. Collection of fiction and nonfiction tales taken from presumably The Boston True Flag periodical up to the year 1870. All pieces are clipped from the paper and glued onto the pages of the book with hand numbered pages at the top and a handwritten contents page at the front. Stories range from murder to romance railway travel US westerns etc. Included are "The Idyl of Red Gulch" by Bret Harte; a piece on pirates of Cuba; a piece set in Australia revolving around the killing of old men; a piece recalling the life and exploits of the outlaw Nixon Curry who was a fugitive from North Carolina after being arrested for slave-stealing; an account of prison life in Massachusetts from the late 1700s to mid 1800s; an account of a rampage by a circus elephant Columbus in New Orleans in 1839 containing a little information on the Raymond and Wahring's Circus and Menagerie. GOOD condition. Jacket torn tattered worn and missing pieces from the head and tail of the spine. Moderate soiling staining and browning to the jacket. Jacket glue to the book covers. Interior solid with scattered soiling and staining. Some pages rather discolored and hard to read due to the glue having soaked through the paper. No Publisher unknown

A single issue of this little magazine from the turn of the century featuring essays and philosophical/literary musings on culture society art and literature as well as short aphorisms and sayings throughout. Founded by Hubbard after his 'bitter experience with the New England intellectual and literary elite' the Philistine was at first intended as a 'one-off jibe at the establishment.' MacLeod: American Little Magazines of the 1890s. Published through the Roycrofters community in New York the magazine eventually became a vehicle for Hubbard to express his political and cultural views while incorporating the Arts and Crafts aesthetic popular at the time into printing and layout. This issue with an article written by inventor and author Milo Hastings finding positives in the marrying of first cousins. GOOD condition. General browning to the wraps.
