A poem for children memorializing the life of Abraham Lincoln. Bayard Taylor was a noted 19th century American poet and travel writer. POOR condition with the aforementioned pieces MISSING. Very heavy chipping and tearing along the extremities with a large piece of the lower center title page DETACHED but present. Large pieces missing from the margin of the last illustration with the illustration creased and effectively torn almost completely in half. Moderate toning to the paper with general overall soiling to the title page and scattered soiling throughout. Faint dampstain affecting the upper right portion of the pages. Printed wraps although MISSING rear wrap. 126 pp. A printing of arguments rebuttals and statements against the trustees of the Dudley Observatory in New York defending the character of Benjamin Gould astronomer and assailing the trustees' actions. This controversy arose over a conflict in the building of the observatory with the appointed council of scientists and advisors advocating a suspension in building activities until the financial aspects were straightened out while the appointed trustees advocated a continuation of operations. This resulted in Gould being dismissed by the trustees with the council refusing to recognize this dismissal leading to Gould occupying the observatory until evicted see Dudley Observatory's website for a history of this controversy. FAIR/GOOD condition LACKING the rear wrap. Ex-library with a few blindstamps to the paper in the interior. Moderate darkening minor soiling and staining to the front wrap with creasing and wrinkling present as well as minor chipping and loss along the edges. FAIR condition. Moderate fading and uneven toning to the covers. Minor soiling and staining. Cloth split along the front hinge with heavy fraying and tattering resulting in the front cover being VERY TENUOUSLY attached to the spine. Heavy chipping and tearing along the head and tail of the spine. Interior text block a bit shaken but intact. Scattered foxing offsetting and browning mostly to the plates. Owner's bookplate present. Full page map of New England present in the almanac. 1839 Farmer's Almanac containing the usual monthly information and with some articles on agriculture census of the United States legal tender of gold and silver list of broken banks in New England a list of roads etc. With a map of New England. GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy toning to the wrappers with some soiling and staining including a black ink stain to the front wrapper. Heavy chipping tearing and creasing along the extremities with moderate to heavy wrinkling to the wrappers in general. Uneven heavy toning to the paper in the interior with moderate scattered foxing. Also present is a short piece giving the American standard of money giving correct weights. Another table shows the value of gold coins of Britain France and Spain as of 1816. With a list of college vacations that year an article on fatting swine and smut in wheat as well as a short section on garden seeds. GOOD condition. Heavy tattering to what remains of the cover as well as to the binding edge of the rear cover. Moderate browning mostly to the extremities with scattered minor foxing and soiling throughout. Faded ownership signature on the second page. Some creasing to the page corners. Minor tears along the extremties. As is in POOR condition. Richardson and Lord unknown
