One essay is written by Josiah Quincy. In POOR condition. Most of the front cover is LACKING missing its upper half. Heavy tattering to what remains of the cover as well as to the binding edge of the rear cover. Moderate browning mostly to the extremities with scattered minor foxing and soiling throughout. Faded ownership signature on the second page. Some creasing to the page corners. Minor tears along the extremties. As is in POOR condition. Richardson and Lord unknown

Emancipation in the West Indies: A Six Months' Tour in Antigua Barbados and Jamaica in the Year 1837
i-xx-21-412 pages with large fold out frontispiece map and index. Small octavo 7 3/4" x 5" bound in original publisher's blind stamped decorative gray cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Second edition.<br /><br />James Thome was the son of a Kentucky slaveholder. But from early on he harbored uneasy feelings about slavery and in 1834 that uneasiness turned to unqualified abhorrence when as a theological student he attended an extended debate on the morality of slavery. Soon Thome was serving as a traveling agent for the American Anti-Slavery Society and by 1837 he and a companion Horace Kimball were conducting a study for the society on the results of slave emancipation in the British West Indies. In the report on this trip Emancipation in the West Indies Thome and Kimball offered evidence that firmly refuted the prevailing belief among abolitionists that slavery could only be eliminated gradually because most slaves would need to be prepared for life in freedom. As a result the American Anti-Slavery Society shifted from its advocacy of gradual emancipation to a demand for "unconditional freedom without delay."<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Previous owner's neat old quil name on front pastedow; corners gently bumped; edge wear; corners and spine ends rubbed else about very good. A reprint of this work originally published under the title "The War with the South" and issued in parts. This edition continued and finished by Benjamin Smith. A general history of the Civil War looking at the various battles campaigns notable figures etc. GOOD condition. A few illustrations detached but present. Heavy scuffing to the leather along the extremities and spine with general fading and otherwise minor scuffing to the covers. Minor soiling and staining to the covers. A memoir recounting the early American family history of the Lucy Harris Tufts' ancestors starting with Richard the Tory who was a friend of William Penn. Tufts through anecdotes told to her by her grandmother recounts her family's life during and after the American Revolution including the loss of family land and exile of her great-grandfather. Anecdotes of fencing with George Washington are recalled as well as her great-grandfather's presence at the burial of General Braddock and mention of many other notable Americans during the time of the Revolution. Tufts also recounts her life growing up as well as the bitterness felt by her family for the mistreatment faced by them at the end of the American Revolution. In GOOD condition. Faint foxing and minor staining present to the covers. Mostly minor scuffing and general fading to the cloth. Minor soiling. Minor edgewear. Spine sunned with some foxing and spotting.
