‎University of California Press. 1993. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Minor shelfwear to DJ. DJ spine a bit sunned.; 259 pages; The enigmatic three-mile-long Dema wall in the countryside outside ancient Athens has perplexed archaeologists and historians for decades. When was it built and what role did it play in Greek military history In a tour de force of archaeological and historical argument Mark H. Munn establishes the place of the Dema wall in the defense of Athens and offers a completely new perspective on the Boiotian War. Since no ancient reference to the wall survives scholars have contested the date and purpose of the wall's construction placing it anywhere between the Geometric Age and Hellenistic eras. While directing the excavation of a watchtower above the wall Munn's chance discovery of a datable sherd in the wall's remains fixed the date of the wall's construction at 378 B. C. the onset of the three-year Boiotian War. Munn offers an absorbing narrative account of the war and his descriptions and effective use of literary extracts render a vivid portrayal of the opposing generals military tactics and battle scenes. . 0520076850 . ‎MUNSTER, SEBASTIAN.‎

‎Tabula Europae IX. Thraciae Civitates.‎

‎Henri Petri, Basilea, 1541 – 1545. Carta geografica tratta dalla “Geographia Universalis Vetus et Nova Complectens”, edita da H. Petri (realizzata a cura di B. Pirckheimer, Tip. H. Petrum).

‎Diodorus Siculus and the World of the Late Roman Republic‎

‎8vo, hardcover in dj, pp.310. offers a fresh look at one of the most neglected historians of the ancient world and recovers Diodorus originality and importance as a witness to one of the most tumultuous periods in antiquity. Muntz analyzes the first three books of Diodorus, which cover barbarian ethnography, myth, and early history and contain the most varied and eclectic material in his work. He shows how Diodorus defines the physical, political, and cultural boundaries of the late Roman Republic in these books and uses them to map out future possibilities for the Romans. Diodorus reveals through the history, myths, and customs of the barbarians the secrets of successful states and rulers, and contributes to the debates surrounding the transition from Republic to Empire. Muntz establishes just how linked the barbarians of the Bibliotheke are to the crumbling Republic and demonstrates that through the medium of the ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, Indians, and others Diodorus engages with major issues and intellectual disputes of his time, including the origins of civilization, the propriety of ruler-cult, the benefits of monarchy, and the relationship of myth and history. Diodorus has many similarities with other authors writing on these topics, including Cicero, Lucretius, Varro, Sallust, and Livy. But, as Muntz argues, engaging with such controversial issues, even indirectly, could be dangerous for a Greek provincial such as Diodorus, and he may never have completed or fully published his bilbiotheke in his lifetime.‎

‎La Grèce à l'époque archaïque. Early Greece.‎
