This book analyzes the Turkish and Greek narratives of shared Turkish-Greek history by focusing on the "long nineteenth century", which was a period of turmoil for both societies. The four centuries of Ottoman rule over the Greek community, the Greek rebellion/war of independence, emergence of an independent Greek state, Ottoman reforms with regard to millet system, joint efforts of some Turkish and Greek communities for the re-promulgation of the Ottoman Constitution, increasing tensions between the Committee of Union and Progress and the Greek community and finally the transformation from coexistence to conflict during and after the World War I are covered briefly with the conflicting lenses of Turkish and Greek historiography. The book also attracts attention to Greek claims for a Greek Genocide by the Ottoman/Turkish authorities during and after the World War I and questions whether inter-communal clashes in Western and Northern Anatolia in this period can be considered as genocide in accordance with international law.

br. Il simposio, che alla lettera vuol dire 'bevuta in comune', è la forma del banchetto dell'antica Grecia. I commensali vi partecipano secondo una sequenza che prevede prima il mangiare, poi il bere e, in ultimo, il piacere. Il piacere che si condivide può essere il godimento erotico, accompagnato da canti, danze, schermaglie o giochi di abilità a sfondo amoroso, oppure il piacere intellettuale, sublimato nell'alta conversazione, centrale nella tradizione platonica e filosofica in genere. Anche la posizione dei commensali nel simposio ha un grande ruolo: c'è infatti il banchetto 'seduto'di Omero e il banchetto 'sdraiato su letti', che viene dall'Oriente. E c'è il banchetto a Roma, dove prevalgono le grandiose cene, da quella di Nasidieno a quella di Trimalcione, con autentiche grandi abbuffate. Mangiare, bere, gioire insieme: il banchetto antico tra edonismo e spiritualità.

For 30 years Professor George E. Mylonas directed excavations at Mycenae for Washington University in St. Louis and the Archaeological Society of Athens. (1951-1981) Thirty years of excavation have brought about the need for a Guide book such as this, which contains the latest results of the archaeologists' work at Mycenae. The illustrations and the many plans it contains will, I hope, make easy the study of the ruins which at first glance seem labyrinthine.
