In The City in Late Antiquity archaeologists and historians bring together their two disciplines to discuss what became of these cities, after the crisis of the third century and the later collapse of the Empire. While the classical city has often been portrayed as in decline everywhere by the fourth century, this book shows this picture to be too simplistic. In some regions, such as Africa, old customs were still vigorous, while elsewhere, for example in Britain, urban life disappeared and the cities survived only as fortresses, if at all. This book pays particular attention to the impact of the Christianization of the Empire on the cities.

The book has two main parts: I: The Athenian Widow in Law and Society; & II: Orphans in Classical Athens. Part II catalogues the onstage expression of what people desired: revenge, honor, free will, legal personhood, family, marriage, sex, food, free speech; a way home, through memory; and manumission, or escape - all complicated by the actors' maleness.
