The frontispiece has been mounted on front free endpaper verso; the plate 'Monastery of St. Paul', called for at p.217, is placed at p.223. THIS VOLUME REMAINS THE ONLY SUBSTANTIAL WORK IN ENGLISH dedicated to the Athos peninsula, its monasteries and its monks. The author, who lived with the monks of several monasteries during the 1880s, records its ecclesiastical history throughout the Byzantine and Ottoman periods to its present status as an independent Greek state. In-8 gr., legatura edit. in pelle verde con disegno geometrico impresso a secco al piatto anter., tagli super. dorati, astuccio in cartonato con cuffie in pelle (tracce di nastro adesivo su un piatto), pp.nn. 34, frontespizio con titolo in nero e verde, avvertenza di Ghiannis Ritsos (1909-1990, uno degli autori classici della poesia greca contemporanea) cui fanno seguito i testi delle 18 canzonette dedicate a Mikis Theodorakis (che aveva chiesto a Ritsos qualche suo testo inedito da musicare), quindi nota del traduttore Filippo Maria Pontani. Il testo di questi canti popolari è stato composto a mano e stampato in torchio da Franco Riva. Tiratura limitata di 50 esempl. numerati. Il ns. 20, è in ottimo stato.
