8vo, br. ed. pp.370. Verso la metà del IV secolo l'imperatore Giuliano nei "Cesari", una singolare opera satirica, ma dalle forti connotazioni personali, in cui sono passati in rassegna, con Alessandro Magno, i suoi principali predecessori, dà di Augusto una definizione peculiare: era un "camaleonte". Non è da sottovalutare questo giudizio da parte di una personalità come Giuliano che, arrivato inaspettatamente all'età di trent'anni al potere supremo, aveva concepito un disegno profondamente innovatore dello Stato romano, in primo luogo in senso religioso, e che dimostrò particolare sensibilità per le strategie comunicative. In verità Augusto risulta una personalità difficile da valutare già per gli antichi e non stupisce che tanto articolate siano state le presentazioni che la sua figura ha conosciuto anche negli studi più recenti. Appartiene senza dubbio a quel genere di personaggi poliedrici dei quali non è facile delineare un ritratto fedele e di cui è lecito privilegiare un aspetto rispetto a un altro. Giuliano è sicuramente in difficoltà a dare un giudizio netto su una figura tanto multiforme come quella di Augusto, il cui carattere autentico risulta alla fine sfuggente, soprattutto se si vuole uscire da schemi precostituiti.

Giuliano. L'imperatore filosofo e sacerdote che tentò la restaurazione del Paganesimo
8vo, br. ed. pp.372. Avversario di Costantino, cercò di cancellare le politiche dello zio abolendo il Cristianesimo e tentando una riforma radicale dell'Impero. È al breve regno dell'imperatore Giuliano, al suo tentativo di restaurazione del paganesimo che si deve la caratterizzazione del IV secolo come un'età di conflitto religioso. In realtà è opportuno restituire a questa figura di sovrano tutto il suo spessore, a cominciare da una chiara volontà di riformare alcuni aspetti di criticità della realtà imperiale tardo-antica, come la fiscalità e l'autonomia cittadina. Giuliano avversò decisamente la figura di Costantino, ma non solo per la sua conversione al cristianesimo. Egli ne contestò infatti il modo in cui resse l'Impero nella sua globalità al punto da rendere ammissibile sostenere (Santo Mazzarino) che la storia del IV secolo può essere interpretata alla luce di queste due figure "epocali". In realtà il progetto di governo di Giuliano era ambizioso e di ampio respiro, e ne giustifica la riscoperta, soprattutto in età umanistica e illuministica, che ha esiti significativi che giungono sino ai nostri giorni.
