The Golden Greek
" They called him The Golden Greek, the man with the Midas touch who'd build a business colossus in the shipping of oil. For Kostas Levantikos had two advantages when he began his career in the turbulent post-war years - the soul of a pirate, and a genius for striking a bargain. A sea-novel of action, adventure and intrigue laced with the lethal ingredients of love, money, power and sex." 267p. Neat tight unmarked text, slightly scuffed paper covers. Book

Athenian Myths and Institutions: Words in Action
"This book provides an introduction to the critical interpretation of Athenian myths. It does not retell the various myths under consideration, but rather examines the myths from a variety of perspectives, including the traditional historical and literary-critical interpretations, as well as the more modern approaches of anthropologists, feminist critics, and in particular, the work of the French structuralists Jean-Pierre Vernant, Marcel Detienne, and Pierre Vidal-Naquet. ARCHAEOLOGY MEETS SCIENCE: BIOMOLECULAR INVESTIGATIONS IN BRONZE; The Primary Scientific Evidence 1997-2003
Oxbow Books. 2008. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. 328 pages; This book has come out of a project that pioneered and is continuing to pioneer the in-depth application of state of the art scientific analyses to ceramic artefacts and skeletal material. The vases and skeletons of Bronze Age Greece which are the subjects of this comprehensive study do not appear as they do in their usual format - illustrations in a book with descriptions of contexts. In this project and therefore in this book each object is revealed from the inside and because of this it has a different story to tell - what people ate and drank in everyday life the diet and health of the people who lived in Bronze Age Greece. By means of organic residue and stable isotope analysis knowledge has been extended beyond anything previously gleaned through normal archaeological research. There are some fascinating insights such as the origin of modern Greek retsina which was traced first to the time of Agammemnon then to Crete in the 17th century BC and finally to the Early Minoan Period c. 2000 BC. The results of this ground breaking project have been presented in 7 international exhibitions starting with the National Archaeological Museum in Athens in 1999. It is the most widely travelled exhibition of Greek artefacts ever mounted. This volume gives the reader the ultimate "story within the story": the primary scientific evidence behind the work that has been carried out up to 2003. It has been written by the world renowned scientists who carried out the work. . 1842172387 . Oxbow Books hardcover

Tzedakis, Yannis & Holley Martlew (Ed. )
MINOANS AND MYCENAEANS Flavours of Their Time
To say this book is innovative, challenging and has far-reaching consequences in the field of archaeology, would be an understatement. Accompanying an exhibition held in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens (July-November 1999) this is a unique study of the eating and drinking habits, health, disease and medicine of the Mycenaean and Minoan civilisations. It is based on the most up-to-date scientific techniques testing residues from ceramic vessels (cups, bowls, storage jars, both decorated and plain) , married with analysis of faunal, plant, and molluscan remains from excavations, iconographic and written sources, and human remains. It is rare in archaeology to be able to answer questions posed with a yes or no answer and provide scientific proof at the same time. Did they drink beer at Myrtos? Yes! Did they eat meat and vegetable stew at Chania? Yes! Was retsina really discovered in the Greek Bronze Age? Yes! The methods, approach and findings from this project, which is still in progress, have far-reaching significance both within and outside an Aegean context. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 287 pages

Tzoka, Theodora
To Vivlio Tis Evdokias / ?? ?????? ??? ????????
My mother was called Evdokia and this is her story as well as the story of the people who accompanied her in such a short and tragic passage through the world. Leaving, she left behind everything: her mother, her two brothers, her home and a country ravaged and impoverished by a world war and a civil conflict worse than the fascist scourge that swept across Europe.Soon the first storms of winds that were sown in Greece will break out in the Promised Land... When Evdokia married Aristides, no one in the village could believe that a girl only nineteen years old ...was given to Aristides. When once I asked her if she loved Dad, she had said a resounding "no" ...I had the impression that behind this laconic answer was a great story that he did not want to share with anyone. 399p. Looking at Ancient History
Vintaga copy. This book tells in words and pictures the story of the ancient world : Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome. It tells how the people of those countries lived and worked - how they dressed, built their homes, travelled, played and fought. Since it is mainly a social history it deals only briefly with political events, but great rulers and men outstanding in their time are introduced and a special chapter is devoted to Alexander the Great and his conquests. There are over 200 illustrations, photographs ,imaginative reconstructions and scenes from ancient history drawn by J. G. B. Knight. The cover design is by Alan Sorrell.112p. index, DJ spine sun faded, else fine. Book
