brossura L'esistenza di partiti politici nella polis greca è oggetto di un vivace dibattito tra gli studiosi. Alcuni sostengono l'impossibilità di parlare di partiti politici nel contesto di una democrazia diretta quale quella greca. Essi infatti dovrebbero essere guidati da un leader, essere sostenuti da una consistente schiera di seguaci e avere un certo grado di organizzazione e stabilità. Usare il temine "partito" a proposito del mondo greco sarebbe quindi solo la conseguenza anacronistica di un "topos modernizzante". Il presente volume, al contrario, vuole riconsiderare la questione senza idee preconcette e mettere in luce, accanto ai tanti sottolineati elementi di differenziazione tra mondo antico e mondo moderno, anche le analogie. Attraverso l'analisi di alcuni contesti cittadini quali Atene, Sparta, Siracusa e altre corti ellenistiche, il problema dei partiti nella realtà greca viene dunque rivisto in una prospettiva più possibilista, volta a sottolineare l'idea che, nel nostro rapporto con il mondo antico, continuità e discontinuità non possono escludersi reciprocamente.

O come Antifonte, Pisandro, Frinico, Teramene, protagonisti di una nuova e sconcertante stagione politica. Lo scopo è quello di assumere il potere per affermare i propri interessi personali. Alla perenne ricerca del consenso, costretta a compiacere il popolo, quella classe politica da una parte gli concede un potere eccessivo e incontrollabile, dall'altra ne manipola la volontà eccitandone le passioni. Nella gestione dello Stato, il tema dell'interesse comune passa così in secondo piano; al politico democratico si sostituisce il demagogo, nel senso moderno del termine. I colpi di Stato oligarchici sono dunque la degna conclusione di questo processo degenerativo e sono realizzati attraverso raffinate tecniche di controllo del consenso. Ma la democrazia riesce a mostrare capacità di reazione e gli esperiemnti oligarchici rientrano con rapidità: restava da affrontare la ricostruzione, non solo sul piano istituzionale ma anche e soprattutto su quello ideologico ed etico. Si trattava di tornare a porsi come obiettivo, e come limite alle ambizioni dei singoli, "la giustizia e l'ultile della città".

br. Cittadini e stranieri possono convivere senza conflitti? Le differenze di carattere etnico, linguistico, religioso, culturale, sociale suscitano inevitabilmente un sentimento di più o meno grave estraneità, con cui è necessario confrontarsi lucidamente per poter affrontare le complesse questioni relative alla convivenza e all'integrazione. Il confronto con l'esperienza del mondo antico non fornisce soluzioni (che non possono prescindere dal contesto storico in cui maturano), ma offre certamente significativi elementi di riflessione. Questo libro prende in esame il rapporto fra cittadini e stranieri (liberi o schiavi, residenti o non residenti) nella città greca, seguendone l'evoluzione dall'arcaismo all'età ellenistica: e lo fa partendo da un tema cruciale, quello della consapevolezza identitaria greca e del modo in cui essa influì sul rapporto con chi vi era estraneo. Un'occasione per meditare in modo consapevole su quei problemi di relazione con l'"altro"che i Greci dovettero affrontare e che la storia ripropone oggi.
