8vo, ril. editoriale in sovracoperta. pp. 496, cm 13x20,5. (Scrittori Greci e Latini). Elena non è mai stata a Troia. Non è lei che i vecchi della città hanno contemplato sulle mura. Non è lei che Telemaco ha ammirato nel suo palazzo di Sparta. La dea Era a Paride non diede che un fantasma, un'immagine fatta con l'aria del cielo, che pure respirava: copia identica, doppio preciso, di Elena. L'Elena di carne e d'ossa, invece, la prese Ermes e la portò in Egitto, nella casa del casto Proteo, perché il letto di Menelao non venisse violato. Il primo scontro tra Occidente e Oriente, la guerra di Troia, fu combattuta soltanto per un'illusione. Zeus voleva semplicemente alleviare la madre terra dell'eccessiva massa di esseri umani che l'appesantiva e dare fama al più forte degli eroi, Achille. Questo è il nucleo fantastico dell'"Elena" di Euripide, al quale si aggiunge tutta una serie di motivi non proprio secondari: perché nel suo lungo nostos da Troia verso Sparta, Menelao, che con sé conduce il «fantasma» riconquistato, approda in Egitto e si trova davanti a un'«altra», una «nuova», la «vera» Elena, che subito lo riconosce e pronuncia parole sublimi: «È divino riconoscere quelli che amiamo». Urge organizzarne la fuga dall'Egitto, inventando una scusa per beffare il re Teoclimeno - che desidera farla sua sposa - con l'aiuto della sorella di lui Teonoe («mente divina») e il favore degli dèi. Ma il Coro, in un brano dall'intenso lirismo e dalla notevole profondità filosofico-teologica, si domanda: «Che cos'è, poi, un dio, cosa non lo è, e cosa c'è nel mezzo? / Quale uomo dopo una lunga ricerca / potrà dire di aver scorto il limite estremo / vedendo le opere degli dèi / andare in una direzione e poi in un'altra, / e poi piegarsi ancora in esiti contraddittori e insperati?». L'"Elena" non prospetta alcuna certezza. Barbara Castiglioni, che nell'Introduzione offre una bella ricostruzione dei modelli antichi di Elena ed elabora un eccellente Commento, riassume così: «una dolente lucidità insidia l'atmosfera di forzosa illusione che pervade il dramma, e l'angoscia e la disperazione emergono dall'esplosione di leggerezza esotica e sotto il velo di brillantezza della trama. Proprio come un'ombra, un'impressione di vanità ricopre ogni istante della tragedia».

Apparso nel 1550 per il Torrentino, porta la stessa dedica del Carani, ma con data diversa.L' autore visse nel XII secolo, fu Arcivescovo di Tessalonica, svolse un' intensa attività letteraria, nonostante il suo impegno di rialzare la disciplina e lo spirito del monacato contrastato dalla resistenza dei monaci stessi. Ebbe successo e più edizioni, una del 1801 sta nella " Raccolta degli Erotici Greci Tradotti in Italiano ". Dorez, Le Cardinal Cervini et l' imprimerie à Rome). Il volume I contiene il commento dell'Iliade, i vol. II e III, rispettivamente, il testo dell'Iliade e dell'Odissea, mentre il vol. IV, termina il commento ed ha copiosi e dettagliati indici, compilati da Matteo Devarius, impressi su tre colonne in corpo più piccolo. Prima edizione del Commento ai poemi omerici, di Eustazio di Tessalonica, dotto bizantino vissuto nel XII secolo. All'epoca fu il più vasto e stimato, tra i commentari conosciuti, resta ancor oggi assai prezioso per l' immensa ricchezza del materiale che vi è raccolto e per la grande quantità di citazioni di opere andate perdute; i testi sono assai corretti. Splendido, monumentale capolavoro della tipografia greca, che richiese al Blado nove anni di lavoro in collaborazione con altri tipografi, in particolare con Bernardo Giunta.
