Fronda
Between Rome and Carthage
8vo. (404 pages) Explores the relations of the Italian cities with Rome and Carthage during the Second Punic War.The great Carthaginian general, Hannibal, invaded Italy during the Second Punic War (218-201 BC) with the hope of raising widespread rebellions among Rome's subordinate allies in the south. He was partly successful, but did not win over enough Italian cities to defeat Rome. Understanding their motivations reveals much, not just about the war itself, i1. Introduction, 2. Apulia, 3. Campania, 4. Bruttium and Western Magna Graecia, 5. Southern Lucania and Eastern Magna Graecia, 6. The Roman re-conquest of Southern Italy, 7. Conclusions, Appendix A. Defection of the Southern Lucanians, 212. BiographicalNote: Michael P. Fronda is Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Classical Studies, McGill University. He has published a number of articles on topics in ancient history and has contributed to D. Hoyos (ed.), The Blackwell Companion to the Punic Wars.

Funke, Peter & Matthias Haake (Eds )
GREEK FEDERAL STATES AND THEIR SANCTUARIES; Identity and Integration
Franz Steiner Verlag. 2013. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. In ancient Greece religion and politics were inextricably linked. This symbiosis manifests itself particularly clearly in Greek sanctuaries as locations of both cult practices and political activities. A colloquium held at Munster aimed at analysing the formative function of trans-regional sanctuaries in mainland Greece and on the Greek islands in the genesis and legitimisation of political order in Greek tribal alliances and federal states from the Archaic down to the Hellenistic period.

Fustel De Coulanges, Numa Denis
The Ancient City : A Study on the Religion, Laws, and Institutions of Greece and Rome
"Originally published in 1864 as as 'La Cite? Antique, ' this remarkable work describes society as it existed in Greece during the age of Pericles and in Rome at the time of Cicero. Working with only a fraction of the materials available to today's classical scholar, Fustel de Coulanges fashioned a complete picture of life in the ancient city, resulting in a book impressive today as much for the depth of its portrait as for the thesis it presents. In 'The Ancient City, ' Fustel argues that primitive religion constituted the foundation of all civic life... 'The Ancient City' rightly takes its place alongside a number of pioneering works of the late nineteenth century that offered radically new interpretations of ancient society and culture. Indeed, modern anthropology, as well as classics, owes a debt to Fustel de Coulanges, whose early insights in 'The Ancient City' remain valid and provocative today." Reprint of the 1873 translation by Willard Small. 396p.A tight unmarked vintage paperback. Book

Taglio superiore dorato. Ritratto di Fénélon all'antiporta. Vignetta xilografica al titolo. Illustrazioni xilografiche n.t. e litografiche f.t.
