Athens and beyond: 30 Day Trips & Weekends
Athens: Athens News 2004 "In the old days even fifteen years ago you had to be tough to venture into most of Greece's mountains. And I don't mean just to walk or hike amongst the glorious peaks or verdant upper pastures. Surviving the nights in a bleak unheated room required even sterner stuff. We faced the nights with the help of a small potbellied stove and immoderate quantities of rough local wine. But these days one doesn't have to suffer. There are signs that a revolution is taking place in formerly remote mountain regions." Whether in hot pursuit of a rumored revival in the mountains a riveting fresco hidden in an Attica church a new find in the archaeological sites of the Peloponnese or even just a very good island wine -- Diana Farr Louis has been taking to the roads less traveled in Greece for the last forty years and coming back to Athens with ever more stories recipes and a deep sense of what makes the country what is today. In this collection of articles printed in the Athens News from 1997 to 2003 the paper's foremost travel columnist recounts her day trips around Athens and short weekends further afield bringing together the history mythology cuisine and culture of each place with the ease of a local and the eye for detail of a modern day Pausanias. Athens and Beyond is divided by region into chapters on Athens and Attica the Peloponnese and Central Greece and nearby Islands. It also provides practical information updated for this edition such as restaurant and hotel recommendations phone numbers and museum hours leaving travelers to the thrill of the chase. 1st Greek Ed. Lovelace, Merline
Siren's Call (Destiny's Women
(Harlequin Historical No 236) "She rose from the water like a nymph, dressed only in sea foam and a wild mane of midnight hair. This was Phaedra, a daughter of Sparta, a woman who could easily lure a man into dangerous waters - where Alexander of Athens would willingly drown. He abducted Phaedra as a prelude to battle, then tempted her with his raw virility and laughing blue eyes. But yielding to this golden-haired warrior would betray all that she was. Yet to refuse his love would deny all that she was meant to be!" Book

Lucan (Marcus Annaus Lucanus); Marmontel, Jean Francois.
LA PHARSALE DE LUCAIN, Traduite en Francois par M. Marmontel.
Two volumes. I. [1], LXXIX, 304. II. [1], 415, [1](Errata), [4](Approbation) + Eleven (11) engraved plates. French text. 8vo. 200 mm. Edges decorated red. Some age stain and foxing. Original decoratively mottled full leather bindings. Spines worn, but some gilt remains. Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (39-65 CE), was an important Roman poet, born in Cordoba. One of the outstanding figures of the Imperial Latin period, his youth and speed of composition set him apart from others. The Pharsalia is an epic poem on the Roman Civil War. It is considered the greatest epic in Latin after the Aeneid. It depicts the Battle of Pharsalus (48 BC) where Julius Caesar defeated Pompey. Lucan's poetic talent apparently aroused the jealously of the Emperor Nero. After the publication of Pharsalia the Emperor forbade him to write, or even plead in the courts, and then later compelled him to commit suicide for alleged treason. The engraved plates in this edition are mostly by the famous French engraver and book illustrator, Hubert Francois Gravelot (1699-1733). The original art was by: Antoine-Jean Duclos; Emanuel Jean Nepomucene Ghendt; Noel Le Mire; Francois Denis Nee; Jean Francois Rousseau; and Jean-Baptiste Blaise Simonet. See: Schweiger II, 568; Cohen & DeRicci 662. Apparently not in Ray. Very good. CHEST 2/1.
