Seaford Richard
RECIPROCITY AND RITUAL Homer and Tragedy in the Developing City-State
Oxford University Press. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. 1994. First Edition. Hardcover. 0198149492 . Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. Else minor shelfwear to book. Dustjacket has foxing to DJ flaps and flaps are not sitting square creased. ; 454 pages; This is an exciting and entirely new synthesis combining anthropology political and social history and a close reading of central Greek texts to account for two of the most significant hallmarks in Homeric epic and Athenian tragedy: the representation of ritual and codes of reciprocity. Both genres are pervaded by these features yet each treats them in entirely different ways. In this book Seaford shows that these differences cannot be accounted for in merely literary terms but require a historical explanation. Challenging thoroughly lucid and at times controversial this lively and original work is the first to attempt to understand the development of early Greek literature from the perspective of state-formation. It should interest all those concerned with the literature and history of classical Greece. . Oxford University Press hardcover

Sealey Raphael
DEMOSTHENES AND HIS TIME A Study in Defeat
Oxford University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0195079280 . Issued in laminated boards. Printed in the UK by Lightning Source UK. Appears to be later reprint. Not first edition. Corners bumped. Else Fine. ; 352 pages; This book draws on a wide range of evidence to study the history of Athens from 386 to 322 B.C. Taking a sympathetic view of the Second Athenian League Sealey focuses on the career of Demosthenes to provide important insights into Athenian politics and policies. Demosthenes experienced repeated setbacks in his early attempts at public activity but found his mission as a statesman in the conflict with Macedon and subsequently became the leading man in Athens. Sealey rejects theories that assume programmatic divisions among Athenian statesmen into pro- and anti-Macedonians and argues that all Athenians active in politics resented Macedonian ascendancy but recognized the necessity of accommodation to superior power. His account concludes with the defeat of Athens and its allies and the suicide of Demosthenes presenting new insights not only into the life of Demosthenes and the turbulent years of his political career but also the social and international factors bearing on Athenian political activity in general. . SEDLEY DAVID
Creazionismo.
