Bowditch Lowell Phebe
Horace and the Gift Economy of Patronage
8vo, br. ed. 281pp. This innovative study explores selected odes and epistles by the late-first-century poet Horace in light of modern anthropological and literary theory. Phebe Lowell Bowditch looks in particular at how the relationship between Horace and his patron Maecenas is reflected in these poems' themes and rhetorical figures. Using anthropological studies on gift exchange, she uncovers an implicit economic dynamic in these poems and skillfully challenges standard views on literary patronage in this period. Horace and the Gift Economy of Patronage provides a striking new understanding of Horace's poems and the Roman system of patronage, and also demonstrates the relevance of New Historicist and Marxist critical paradigms for Roman studies. In addition to incorporating anthropological and sociological perspectives, Bowditch's theoretical approach makes use of concepts drawn from linguistics, deconstruction, and the work of Michel Foucault. She weaves together these ideas in an original approach to Horace's use of golden age imagery, his language concerning public gifts or munera, his metaphors of sacrifice, and the rhetoric of class and status found in these poems. Horace and the Gift Economy of Patronage represents an original approach to central issues and questions in the study of Latin literature, and sheds new light on our understanding of Roman society in general.

Bowersock G. W.
Empires in Collision in Late Antiquity (The Menahem Stern Jerusalem Lectures) (ISBN:9781611683219)
8vo, br. ed. 95pp. based on lectures delivered at the Historical Society of Israel, the famed historian G. W. Bowersock presents a searching examination of political developments in the Arabian Peninsula on the eve of the rise of Islam. Recounting the growth of Christian Ethiopia and the conflict with Jewish Arabia, he describes the fall of Jerusalem at the hands of a late resurgent Sassanian (Persian) Empire. He concludes by underscoring the importance of the Byzantine Empire's defeat of the Sassanian forces, which destabilized the region and thus provided the opportunity for the rise and military success of Islam in the seventh century. Using close readings of surviving texts, Bowersock sheds new light on the complex causal relationships among the Byzantine, Ethiopian, Persian, and emerging Islamic forces.

LATE ANTIQUITY A Guide to the Postclassical World
Book has very light shelfwear else fine. DJ has 1 tiny chip and faint crease along upper edge. ; The first book of its kind, this richly informative guide to the world of late antiquity offers the most recent scholarship to the researcher along with sheer reading pleasure to the browser. In eleven comprehensive essays and in over 500 encyclopedic entries, an international cast of experts provides essential information and fresh perspectives on the history and culture of an era marked by the rise of two world religions, unprecedented political upheavals that remade the map of the known world, and the creation of art of enduring glory. By extending the commonly accepted chronological and territorial boundaries of the period-to encompass Roman, Byzantine, Sassanian, and early Islamic cultures, from the middle of the third century to the end of the eighth-this guide makes new connections and permits revealing comparisons. Consult the article on "Angels" and discover their meaning in Islamic as well as classical and Judeo-Christian traditions. Refer to "Children, " "Concubinage, " and "Divorce" for a fascinating interweaving of information on the family. Read the essay on "Barbarians and Ethnicity" and see how a topic as current as the construction of identity played out in earlier times, from the Greeks and Romans to the Turks, Huns, and Saxons. Turn to "Empire Building" to learn how the empire of Constantine was supported by architecture and ceremony. Or follow your own path through the broad range of entries on politics, manufacturing and commerce, the arts, philosophy, religion, geography, ethnicity, and domestic life. Each entry introduces readers to another facet of the postclassical world: historic figures and places, institutions, burial customs, food, money, public life, and amusements. A splendid selection of illustrations enhances the portrait. The intriguing era of late antiquity emerges completely and clearly, viewed in a new light and from new vantage points, in a guide that will be relished by scholars and general readers alike. ; Harvard University Press Reference Library; 1.66 x 10.5 x 8.34 Inches; 780 pages

Very good targeted recommendations August 16 2002 Reviewer: John Fanguy from Bethesda MD United States My group of friends who had all travelled Greece in our backpacking days benefited greatly from this book. As our trip in July 2002 progressed we relied more and more heavily on the book. The recommendations from sites to food to hotels proved to be excellent every time. I particularly liked that the lodging and restaurant recommendations had inexpensive through expensive listings which we used as our budget-mindedness changed during the trip. For anyone beyond backpacking and Lonely Planet this book is a must. Most useful February 9 1999 Reviewer: Doris dallaire~istar. Ca from Ottawa Canada I found this book very useful. PERICLEAN ATHENS
Weidenfeld & Nicholson. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1971. Hardcover. 029700333X . Light foxing to textblock. DJ has tears and a couple of small pieces missing. ; The history of Athens in the fifth century is looked at to get an overall view of the essential elements that made up the Athenian triumphs of those years. The study centres on Athens in the time of Pericles and for a few years before and after him. The astonishing performance of these years calls for a wide survey - this shows the background against which the political events took place especially the rise and development of the Athenian empire the ideals for which it stood the faults which it developed and the fierce opposition which it aroused. Pericles is the central figure and he gave the finest formulations of Athenian power but he had opponents of whom something is known and who were quite unscrupulous in their attacks. The failure of the Athenian empire after its prodigious start calls for examination. Some conventional ideas on the subject are certainly wrong and Pericles' successors were not as bad as has been maintained. The real hero of the story however is the Athenian people who by founding the first real democracy and fighting to the end for it showed how much it meant to them and what strength it gave to them. ; 310 pages .
