The fourth page and the last four pages are advertisements although an illustration of 'Egyptian Cotton' pads out one of them. Salmon-pink wrappers with text and a large map on the front cover and advertisements on t he other three surfaces; spine lightly sunned and cracked with minimal expert conservation; very tiny cut to the bottom margin throughout maximum depth 5 mm; tiny tear to the leading edge of the rear wrapper expertly sealed; an excellent copy almost certainly uncirculated. The sub-title beneath the drop-title 'Territoria' at the beginning of the text proper on page 5 is instructive: 'A Sketch of its Immense Resources. Reasons for Past Failures. Suggestions for Future Successes. The Need for a Direct Transcontinental Railway. Can it be developed without Colored Labor Yes!'. The foreword to this prospectus aimed at the 'miner the agriculturalist and the pastoralist' is by Simpson Newland President of the Australian Railways and Territory League. Lindsay surveyed the country between the overland telegraph line and the Queensland border explored the MacDonnell Ranges made a brief foray into the Simpson Desert and spent six months in the country between Lake Nash and Powell's Creek' Australian Dictionary of Biography. The introduction to this section states that it is 'slightly abridged' but in fact it is more detailed than the narrative read before the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia South Australian Branch on 29 June 1887 and published in Volume II of the 'Proceedings' of the Society 1888 and in an offprint the same year. In addition to a different text this publication also contains the colour lithographed map entitled 'Map of Explorations & Surveys in the Northern Territory of South Australia .' and a 'Vocabulary of the Language spoken by the Natives in Latitudes 23° to 28° S. as obtained by a Member of my Expedition 1885-6'. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. David Lindsay was an Australian explorer and surveyor and a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. This is an abridged account of his important journey across Australia in 1885-6, in which he passed through a large tract of previously unexplored country in the Northern Territory of South Australia, west of the Queensland boundary. This valuable and absorbing account describes his expedition of the Finke River and excursion to the western boundary of Queensland, also includes an extensive chronological report of his journey from Dalhousie to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Accompanied by a spectacular fold-out colour map illustrating the explorations and surveys in the northern territories of South Australia. The map stretches from the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north to the Truer or Macumba in the south, showing Lindsay's track, survey lines, and telegraph lines. Also included is an impressive Vocabulary list, containing some important native words with their English translations.

18 December 1911. On two letterheads of Sand Hill Winslow Bucks. See his entry and that of his father the civil engineer in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. On separate letterheads. The recipient is not named and there is no salutation though the letter is complete. Signed ‘Brassey’. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once. Begins: ‘I have two maxims for hourly use. / I do the little I can do and leave the rest to thee / What thou livest live well. The rest commit to Heaven / Nor should the last message of the greatest sailor since the world began ever be forgotten / England expects that every man this day will do his duty’. 13 Bloomsbury Street London W.C. 19 April 1899. 1p. 12mo. In good condition. He thanks him for his 'very kind note' but regrets that 'owing to my being engaged on a lecturing tour for some time to come I am at present unable to fix a date to avail myself of your invitation'. He hopes to be able to do so when 'free from my appointments'. For information on de Rougemont' see B. G. Andrews's entry on him in the Dictionary of Australian Biography. Born in Switzerland at around the age of sixteen 'he became a footman to the actress Fanny Kemble touring extensively and learning fluent English. In 1870-74 he was a valet in London and in 1875 came to Australia as a butler with the new governor of Western Australia Sir William Robinson'. Back in London he was introduced to the Wide World Magazine by Sir J. Henniker Heaton and 'From August 1898 to May 1899 it serialized "The adventures of Louis de Rougemont" which focused fancifully on the astounding experiences he had had while allegedly spending thirty odd years as a castaway among the Aboriginals of North-West and Central Australia. The articles were republished as "The Adventures of Louis de Rougemont as Told by Himself" 1899; they were fluently and cleverly written but essentially the plausible concoction of a colonial Munchausen.' 13 Bloomsbury Street, London W.C. 19 April 1899. unknown

The lithographs are a frontispiece view after Skipper 15 full-page portraits and one plate containing three portraits; the photographs are of the Governor and dedicatee Sir William Robinson 140x88mm by Hammer and Co. and Loyau 98x58mm by George and Walton - facing the camera looking a little to his right. This is another variant see Holden 71 of an item usually found with the author's photograph only and to further complicate matters the latter occurs in at least three variant forms as well!.
