‎MEYER, HEA H E A‎

‎Manners and Customs of the Aborigines of the Encounter Bay Tribe South Australia‎

‎Adelaide: 'Printed and published for Government by George Dehane' 1846. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide 'Printed and published for Government by George Dehane' 1846. Octavo ii 15 pages. Later green binder's cloth lettered in black along the spine; title leaf a little marked with a light abrasion near the gutter; a few minor spots and marks; a very good copy. Heinrich Edward August Meyer was a Lutheran missionary who arrived in Australia in 1840 and spent just over two years living with the Raminyeri tribe of the Encounter Bay area before publishing in 1843 'the first grammar and vocabulary on Ngarrindjeri "Vocabulary of the Language spoken by the Aborigines of the Encounter Bay Tribe South Australia". He lived at Encounter Bay until 1848 . Meyer was part of an Adelaide-based community of missionaries from the Dresden Missionary School which placed great emphasis on learning the language because it believed in the importance of communicating with the Aboriginal people in their own language . He also had continuing contact with other missionaries who were also involved in writing grammars such as Clamor Schurmann who had published a grammar of Kaurna the language to the North of Ngarrindjeri just before Meyer's arrival. This background as well as the assertion in his introduction to the 1843 grammar that the whole publication had been twice reviewed with different natives so that the meaning assigned to the words may be relied upon as correct . has resulted in a text that is considered to be a reliable reflection of the language at the time and a good grammar for its time' Corinne Bannister: 'A Longitudinal Study of Ngarrindjeri' online.
In this short but closely printed pamphlet Meyer in 'giving an account of these people . endeavours to trace the life of one from his birth upwards'. His extended period of living with the Encounter Bay people in these early years of white settlement adds authenticity to his detailed account of subjects such as hunting sorcery and burial customs.
Ferguson 4348; see also Ferguson 13095 WOODS J.D. editor: The Native Tribes of South Australia Adelaide Wigg 1879 which reprints this item; Greenway 6696. ‎Michael Terry & Donald George Mackay‎

‎Explorations Near the Border of Western Australia. [AND] The Mackay Aerial Survey Expedition, Central Australia, May - June 1930.‎

‎17 pages. Plus photographic plates and a fold-out colour map measuring approximately 12.25 x 14 inches (31 x 36cm). Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This is a fascinating report by a man who during the previous eleven years had led twelve in Australia with the principal object of searching for minerals of commercial importance. The scope of his field work was now to include reconnaissance survey, soil study, meteorology, and the collection of specimens for the Adelaide Museum. Included is a brief report by Donald Mackay entitled, 'The Mackay Aerial Survey Expedition, Central Australia, May - June 1930.' Accompanied is a lovely fold-out colour map of Western and Central Australia illustrating both reports. Donald George Mackay (1870-1958) was an Australian outdoorsman, long-distance cyclist, and explorer who conducted several expeditions to the remotest areas of the Australian continent. Beginning in 1930, Mackay supervised several aerial survey expeditions to Central Australia. The 1930 expedition surveyed the Southwestern corner of the Northern Territory. Mackay utilized two ANEC III aircraft for the survey, piloted by Captain Frank Neale and Captain H. B. Hussey, with Commander Harry T. Bennett as the navigator and surveyor. The team made 15 survey flights over 24 days, mapping and correcting the dimensions of Lake Amadeus and finding a previously unknown lake (Lake Mackay). The expedition finished at Adelaide on 28 June 1930. Michael Terry, FRGS, FRGSA (1899-1981) was an Australian explorer, surveyor, prospector and writer. He was born at Gateshead, County Durham, England. During the First World War he served with No. 2 Squadron of the RNAS Armoured Cars in Russia against the Bolsheviks, by whom he was captured at Kursk though subsequently released. He moved to Australia in 1918. Between 1923 and 1935 he led 14, mainly gold prospecting, expeditions through inland Australia. Among his published books include: "Untold Miles: three gold-hunting expeditions amongst the picturesque borderland ranges of Central Australia," "Hidden Wealth and Hiding People [a search for gold amongst the blacks of Central Australia]," "Through a Land of Promise: With Gun, Car and Camera in the Heart of Northern Australia," "Across Unknown Australia," "Sand and Sun: Two Gold-Hunting Expeditions in Australia," "Journey to NW & Central Australia."‎

‎MITCHELL, Dame Roma‎

‎A pair of portrait photographs of Dame Roma Mitchell in court dress taken on the occasion of her appointment as Queen's Counsel in 1962‎

‎1962. Fine. 1962. Two vintage gelatin silver photographs visible image size 237 × 187 mm matted glazed and framed to match external dimensions 366 × 306 mm. Both photographs and frames are in fine condition. Dame Roma Mitchell 1913-2000 was Australia's first female Queen's Counsel judge university chancellor and state governor among other achievements. Mitchell was particularly proud of her appointment as Queen's Counsel in September 1962 considering it a highlight of her career and these fine portrait photographs must have been commissioned to mark this occasion. Both show her in court dress against an identical backdrop and with similar props. In one she wears her everyday bar wig and bands and in the other she wears full ceremonial dress with lace jabot and cuffs and full-bottomed wig worn only on formal occasions.
Mitchell's appointment attracted scant media attention but an article in 'The Australian Women's Weekly' on 10 October 1962 makes more ado of her new full-dress regalia than it does of her already-distinguished legal career and pioneering advocacy of women's causes: 'Miss Mitchell an easy-to-talk-to elegantly dressed woman of 48 is tall and will wear full dress with distinction'. For women QCs 'full dress is laid down thus: "Coat made of black superfine cloth in the same style as a man's coat except that it should not be skirted but instead be short as in a lady's ordinary suit . black flexible buttons. Plain white blouse . lace frill and ruffles at wrist. Plain black skirt of superfine cloth. Black silk stockings . black patent-leather ladies' court shoes . cut-steel buckles. Black silk gown . full bottomed wig . black silk "wig-bag" . white gloves"'.
The State Library of South Australia holds examples of both images PRG 778/57/5 and PRG 778/57/6 but does not identify the photographer. 2 items. unknown‎

FIRST EDITION. "A very scarce and important work on Tahiti, by a long-time resident who subsequently became a United States Consular official" (Forbes). Moerenhout provides a detailed history of the exploration of Tahiti from the time of Cook and examines all aspects of native culture. Two plates of portraits and two are views of Tahiti.
