Octavo xx 671 pages with 12 unnumbered line illustrations of churingas a map and 130 illustrations mainly after photographs plus 2 folding maps 3 folding charts 4 folding chromolithographic plates and an erratum slip tipped in at page 1 noting that on page 570 the tassel should be 'pubic' not 'public'. Olive-green gilt-pictorial buckram a little flecked and rubbed with the spine a little sunned; all edges uncut; scattered light foxing; minimal chipping to some uncut leading edges; an excellent copy. The head of the title page is signed in ink by both authors as 'W. Baldwin Spencer' and 'F.J. Gillen'. Inscribed in indelible pencil before the signatures in an unknown hand is 'With Kindest Regards from'. <p>The 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' makes short work of the significance of the book and by extension this signed copy in its entry on Sir Walter Baldwin Spencer 1860-1929: 'The 1894 Horn scientific exploring expedition to central Australia recruited Spencer as zoologist and photographer. Because of friction between members and their sponsor Spencer later combined mediation with editorship of all four volumes of reports. His own seminal contribution included his classic biogeographic interpretation of Australian faunal distribution. This expedition rekindled his anthropological interest when he met F.J. Gillen the Alice Springs postmaster Francis James Gillen 1855-1912 ethnologist. What began as his offer to assist in publishing Gillen's ethnological notes matured into an enduring partnership and a landmark in anthropological history. <p>In 1896 Spencer joined Gillen for the most intensive field-work then attempted in Australia. "The Native Tribes of Central Australia" 1899 which resulted was to influence contemporary theories on social evolution and interpretations of the origins of art and ceremonial. It impressed Sir James Frazer author of "The Golden Bough" who developed a lifelong friendship with Spencer'. Macmillan and Co. Limited unknown

Dark green cloth top edge gilt; covers lightly marked and rubbed at the extremities with minimal wear to one corner; front flyleaf and half-title a little cockled by items mounted on them details below; minor signs of handling it looks as if one leaf pages 67/8 has been neatly excised and reinserted at some stage; two newspaper clippings mounted on the rear flyleaf; overall a very good copy. Provenance: the front flyleaf is inscribed 'To M. Fisher from Sidney Wilcox. 5 Sept 1928'. Mounted below this is a short autograph note signed by M.S. Fisher: 'Left for perusal by Mr Justice Mayo Dr John Mayo Dr Helen Mayo and for permanent retention if they would care to have it. 3.iii.52'. Mounted on the half-title is a newspaper clipping depicting Irene Mayo 'who speaks four languages. However instead of an academic career she prefers modelling jewellery on TV'. Wilcox Fisher and Mayo are all significant local South Australian family names. Sidney Wilcox bequeathed his substantial Brougham Place residence for the creation of a residential college for women St Ann's College; the Mayo dynasty needs no introduction; M.S. Fisher worked for 'The Advertiser' and he and his family regularly featured in the society news. We are uncertain how the two other cuttings portraits of young women and the loosely inserted colour snapshot of an elderly gentleman dated 1972 are connected; perhaps the latter is Mr Fisher. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. Two complete issues, seldom found in such good and original condition. his is a most captivating substantial geographical account from an expedition into the heart of the amazing reefs stretching for nearly 1200 miles in the warm waters of tropical Queensland coast, from Torres Straits to Lady Elliot Island, to which collectively the legendary name "Great Barrier Reef" is applied; being a very descriptive report of the unique qualities of numerous islands and their dramatic changes as they are affected by the tides, possible movement of sea-level, and the cyclone season. With a scientific approach, the report entails much detail on the Bunker and Capricorn Islands, Sand Cays, the Lower Bench and its features, Cliffing, the Higher Bench and Platform, the formation of the Lower Platform on the Low Wooded type of islands. With a substantial section on the 'Low Wooded Islands', also referred to as the 'Island Reefs'. Two sketch maps serve to delineate the Queensland coast, and numerous islands including Lady Musgrave, Heron, Stone, Cockermouth, Houghton, Night, Sherrard, and Enn.

Cloth slightly bumped at the bottom corners with the head of the spine slightly snagged; two pinholes in the front flyleaf where the letters described below were originally attached; an excellent copy. Inscribed dated 23 November 1939 and signed by the author then editor of 'The Bendigo Advertiser' to Harry Peters sometime Director of Lands for South Australia and cousin of the bookseller and WW1 hero Captain Charles Harold Peters. Loosely inserted is a typed ALS from the author to Peters and a carbon copy of his warm and chatty reply referring to Charles and correcting the author on a minor point. Cambridge Press hardcover
