Octavo 170 × 105 mm four parts bound as one volume xvi 280; 64 last blank; 63-106 12 index last three blank; and 39 1 blank pages with woodcut printer's devices on the four title pages and 84 illustrations throughout approximately 80 woodcut illustrations and a few type-set diagrams. There are five leaves missing from the 'Troisième Partie' F4 F5 G1 G4 and G5: pages 85-90 95-96 and 101-104. Nineteenth century half calf and marbled boards now lacking the leather corner-pieces revealing earlier full vellum boards underneath; covers a little worn; light tidemark to the bottom inner corner of the text block throughout; a little worming to the top blank margin of the first 25 leaves; insect damage to the bottom edge extending at most a few millimetres into the wide blank bottom margins; first title leaf dusty and a little soiled; the five missing leaves notwithstanding overall a very presentable copy. The second edition of Claude Mydorge's expanded edition and critique of this popular early work of recreational mathematics first published in 1624 and usually attributed to Jean Leurechon. Each of Leurechon's mathematical problems is reprinted here in roman type with Mydorge's explanatory notes and criticism following in italic. The third part albeit relatively insubstantial only 44 well-illustrated pages is devoted exclusively to fireworks and their construction which probably explains the few missing leaves. The subtitle is: 'Composée d'un receuil de plusieurs plaisantes & recreatives inventions de feux d'artifice plus la maniere de faire toutes sortes de fuzées tant simples que doubles avec leur composition le tout representé par figures sic' Comprising a collection of several pleasant and recreative inventions of fireworks plus the manner of making all sorts of rockets both single and double with their composition all represented in figures. This third part together with the second made its first appearance in a 1628 edition of 'Récréations Mathématiques' published by Charles Osmont at Rouen. Their authorship has not been established HEEFER Albrecht: 'Récréations Mathématiques 1624 A Study on its Authorship Sources and Influence' revised 7 October 2004. <p>The fourth part 'Nottes sic sur les Recreations .' is by D.H.P.E.M. Denis Henrion Professeur ès Mathématiques. <p>Claude Mydorge 1585-1647 French mathematician was a friend of René Descartes with whom he shared a strong interest in optics and the nature of vision. 'Mydorge's first major work was the "Examen du livre des Récréations mathématiques" published in 1630. As the title suggests it was a work on recreational mathematics and was effectively a critique of Laurechon's sic book on the theme 'Récréations mathématiques' by the French Jesuit Jean Leurechon writing under the pen name of van Etten first appeared in 1624. However it was through his work on conic sections that Mydorge made the greatest scientific impact' The Cambridge Descartes Lexicon online. <p>Provenance: a 1713 signature on the first page; an early ownership inscription 'Michael Hutchins His Book' on a preliminary page; 'G.S. Kingston Sept 1834' on the front pastedown: Sir George Strickland Kingston 1807-1880 the South Australian pioneer engineer and politician deputy-surveyor-general under Colonel William Light co-discoverer of the River Torrens first Speaker in the House of Assembly. Ten tinted lithographs by E.C. May of scenes of Australian country life after original sketches by S.T. Gill and George Hamilton five each
Gill's titles are 'Cradling Forest Creek 1852' 'The Claim Disputed' 'Mustering Cattle' 'Native Sneaking Emus' and 'The Bushranger Pursued'. Hamilton's titles in which the horse naturally enough features prominently are 'The Lost Bushman' 'The Found Bushman' 'Bushmen in Danger' 'Australian Bushmen' and 'The Bushman'. Unpublished but circa 1890 and based on original sketches from upwards of fifty years earlier. <p>The images are printed in brown ink on light brown arch-topped backgrounds printed surface 150 × 205 mm on uniform sheets of cream paper 200 × 275 mm. This set is in fine condition in a modern custom-made portfolio covered in brown cloth lettered in gilt on the front panel 'Scenes of Australian Country Life'. <p>The invaluable 'Dictionary of Australian Artists. Painters Sketchers Photographers and Engravers to 1870' edited by Joan Kerr has only this to say: 'MAY E.C. lithographer signed nine lithographs celebrating life in the bush and on the goldfields c.1855-60 ML. He may have been the May who was in partnership with George Walker q.v. at Melbourne in the early 1870s'. At least he appears on their radar . <p>We have established the following facts. Edgar Charles May 1867-1920 was born at North Adelaide on 27 May 1867; his name later appeared in the local Sands and McDougall's directories with his occupation listed as artist. One published example of his work not noted at all by Kerr and not attributed to May by Ferguson is '14 Views of Old Adelaide from Sketches in 1840-1849 by S.T. Gill F.R. Nixon S. Calvert and O. Korn' Adelaide E.S. Wigg 1890; oblong quarto 19 leaves all rectos blank comprising the gilt-pictorial title page signed in the image by E.C. May 14 full-page tinted lithographic views with tissue-guards the 3-page list of 181 subscribers and the key to plate 5 between plates 4 and 5'. This is Ferguson 9924e which is essentially the same item as Ferguson 9807 apart from the different publishers. We have inspected numerous copies of 9924e the Wigg version and the odd Galbraith one and it is clear that the original Galbraith imprint is masked by the gold blocking carrying the later Wigg imprint. The nature of the contents reworked material from well-known earlier artists the medium tinted lithographs printed in brown and the style of the work leave us in no doubt that May is responsible for all the material in '14 Views of Old Adelaide'. <p>We suggest that the ten lithographs offered here were prepared by him with the intention of putting out a companion volume to '14 Views of Old Adelaide'. The change of publisher after that book was printed leads us also to suggest that Galbraith or May or both lost money on the venture and who knows perhaps the Wigg issue was not a commercial success either. In any event one could see how enthusiasm for a sequel might be considerably diminished. All of these plates are rare; complete sets of them are exceptionally rare on the open market even Kerr's dictionary refers to only nine of them. Until now they have been poorly documented in the literature; fortunately some of them have survived to tell their own worthy tale. unknown

South Australian Parliamentary Papers Number 79 and 80 of 1866. The first one by Frederick Howard gives a summary account of activities from 28 December 1865 to 26 August 1866. It contains numerous references to the McKinlay expedition; the 'Beatrice' was its support vessel. Most of the second one contains reports from Escape Cliffs Camp by James Manton Acting Government Resident after the recall of Finniss. These include the complete journal of events at the camp from Manton's arrival on 13 November 1865 until 10 August 1866 with numerous references to John McKinlay and his expeditions. An original pen and ink drawing showing Sir Edgar Boehm's 1834 - 1890 statue 'Young Bull and Herdsman' on a large plinth at the foot of the grand staircase at the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition of 1888. <br /> <br /> A stylishly-dressed Victorian crowd of exhibition viewers strolls about the great hall with the statue on a large plinth highlighted with white accents. With the title penned below the image. Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm 1834 - 1890 is recognized for his colossal statues including one of Queen Victoria executed in marble 1869 for Windsor Castle the monument of the duke of Kent in St. George's Chapel the statue of Carlyle on the Thames embankment at Chelsea and the equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington at Hyde Park Corner. Boehm is also listed as a British exhibitor in the Reports of the United States Commissioners to the Centennial International Exhibition at Melbourne 1888 p111.<br /> <br /> The Young Bull and Herdsman was acquired by the Melbourne Art Gallery and Museum and was then gifted to the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria where it is today outside the RASV offices in the show grounds.<br /> <br /> Unsigned with a small circular mark roughly at center of drawing and a closed tear through the caption but not affecting the drawing; mounted on an album page. 9 3/4 x 8 1/2" unknown

Later binder's cloth retaining the original wrappers; cloth slightly scuffed and rubbed; both volumes a little bumped at the foot of the spines; small cancelled library stamp on each front wrapper 'College of Advanced Education Library Adelaide. 7 June 1973'; small light tidemark to the top inner corner of Volume I Part 3; minimal signs of age and use; in excellent condition. All four parts of the first volume are by STIRLING E.C. and A.H.C. ZIETZ: Fossil Remains of Lake Callabonna. An interesting note from the editor is printed on the verso of the front wrapper of the first part: 'For the purpose of presenting the descriptions of the "Fossil Remains ." in a more suitable form than is permitted by the size of the "Transactions" the Council has decided to publish in royal octavo a series of "Memoirs" . This issue is the first Fasciculus of the first Volume . of which other parts will appear as circumstances permit'. Individual subtitles are as follows. <p>Volume I Part 1. It is interesting to note that these annual reunions did not commence until 15 years after the First World War ended. The outside rear cover has the pencil ownership signature of H.L. Both the photograph and mount are in excellent condition. Contemporary business directories indicate that Fruhling Studio commenced operating from 62 Rundle Street in 1895 'Portrait and Enlarging Co. Fruhling & Co.'; this 'continued until 1913 when the address was changed to 62A Rundle Street. From 1918 to 1927 the address was given as 103A Rundle Street. Although listed as Fruhling & Co. in directories the name Fruhling Studios sic was usually printed on their photographs' Photohistory SA website. The particulars of the uniform elude us but the following information about the parlous state of military affairs in colonial SA at the time this photograph was taken provides some context. These comments come from an unpublished manuscript by Geoffrey H. Manning 'The Russians are Coming - The Defence of Colonial South Australia' now in the State Library of SA. 'By May of 1896 it was finally recognised that the basis upon which the military forces of the Australian colonies were organised was unsatisfactory and it was to cure defects and place matters on a more effective footing that a Consolidating and Amending Act had been passed in the previous session. In the dying days of Parliament its progress through all stages was pushed on and the headlong speed with which it was carried through the two chambers necessarily militated against the critical examination of its many clauses.The fact that the majority of the sections were merely repetitions of those in existing Acts was obviously no justification for dealing with the Bill in such a spasmodic manner. After the Act was assented to more than four months were allowed to pass without anything being done to bring the members of the old force together with a view to acquainting them with the conditions under which they were to be asked to enroll and this policy of procrastination was observed to the last. <p>Enrolment commenced in August but in the face of the many other allurements held out to the youth of South Australia in the form of cricket football baseball lacrosse and - most attractive of all - cycling it was not to be wondered that the process of recruiting was painfully slow; by mid-February 1897 there had been 611 enrollments. With this change came the end of the colourful uniforms that marked the early military history of the colony. The scarlet tunics white-striped blue trousers and white helmets that had followed the grey uniform of the 1880s - the "Destitutes" they called the men in these uniforms - were replaced by khaki with maroon facings and a felt hat. <p>The first parade of the new military forces took place on 3 October 1896 when "The South Australian Army" presented a rather nondescript appearance owing to the fact of so many recruits being in the ranks and yet unprovided with uniforms and also a proportion of men in the old force whose uniforms were worn out and too shabby for wear. The public manifested little interest in the proceedings - it was race-day - and moreover the band was not expressively in evidence. Thick card covers with cloth spines; minor blemishes to some covers; minor damage to a bottom corner of portfolio B Volume 4 see below with loss of the corner-tip to the last three plates; overall the contents are in excellent condition. Two volumes are bound in portrait format; the others are presented in landscape format albeit with the spine along the top edge. The National Library of Australia catalogue states that this material was 'Available only in set of 24 portfolios at $310.00 . "Authentic reproductions ready for framing". Edition limited to 200 numbered copies' we have not traced the original source of this information. However we have incorporated below a number of pertinent details gleaned from Trove; in particular we found the relevant catalogue records provided by the State Library of Victoria to be the most informative. <p>A Magnificent Decorative Designs. Melville Island Abstract - Map Central Aust. - Pintubi Churingas - Victorian Possum Skin Rug - Far N. West Coast Phallocrypt 375 × 505 mm; #13/116. <p>B Australian Aboriginal Art. Primitive Traditional Decorative four volumes each 403 × 550 mm and all numbered #095; together with three larger-format volumes each approximately 550 × 795 mm respectively #1/086 #2/090 and unnumbered. The third volume without the subtitle 'Primitive Traditional Decorative' contains seven plates reproducing ones that appear in the smaller-format volumes; six are printed on paper the seventh is printed on the inside rear card cover. <p>C Cave Paintings of Arnhemland Volumes 1 2 3 and 5; each approximately 385 × 500 mm; all #126. The title of the fifth volume is 'Ceremonial Cave Paintings of Arnhemland "Amazing Anthropomorphic Figures"'. <p>D Central Australian Aboriginal Paintings. Brilliant Abstract Designs of the Pitjantjatjara two volumes bound portrait-format each 750 × 550 mm respectively #66 and #2/100. The first volume has a brown cover decorated in ochre and lettered in black; the second volume has a blue cover decorated in white and lettered in black. Both volumes contain seven plates. <p>E Magnificent Bark Paintings of Arnhemland and the Islands Volumes 1 2 and 4; each approximately 380 × 500 mm; respectively #1/126 #2/116 and #101. The title of the fourth volume is 'Magnificent Bark Paintings of Arnhemland'. <p>Offered together with three plates mounted as issued on thick card; these also appear in the volume of duplicated plates noted in B above. Also included are two copies of another Newcraft Publicity item 'Central Australian Aboriginal Paintings' by Winifred Hilliard wrappers oblong quarto with 7 colour plates; the second copy is numbered 153. Although the lengthy subtitles are different 'The Pitjantjatjara Abstracts. Designs in Vibrant Colours from Ancient Mythological and Totemic Motifs by Aboriginal Artists at Ernabella in the Musgrave Ranges' and 'Ancient Mythological and Totemic Motifs in Vibrant Colors by Finke River Aboriginal Artists' the contents are the same albeit in a different order and with minor variation to the introductory text. To complicate matters even more the same contents appear in the first very much larger-format volume in D above. <p>We have identified five portfolios not present in this run cross-referenced with the descriptions above: A Magnificent Decorative Designs. Volume 1 Churinga Patterns Ground and Rock Paintings; <p>C Cave Paintings of Arnhemland. Volume 4; E Magnificent Bark Paintings of Arnhemland. Volume 3: Oenpelli Portfolio; Australian Aboriginal Art: Bark Paintings - Angurugu Groote Eylandt Gulf of Carpentaria; and Australian Aboriginal Art: Decorated Shields of North Queensland. The SLV also identifies one related item we do not have: 'Australian Aboriginal Art' Melbourne Newcraft Publicity 1969. Gilt-lettered red cloth a little marked and flecked and a little rubbed and bumped at the extremities; trifling signs of use and age; the end-pocket map has minimal siverfish nibbling along small sections of one fold; a very good copy. Provenance: 'given me from "Manoah" Library' is written in ink on the verso of the front flyleaf; a bookplate 'Words Words Words F A S' is mounted on the front pastedown. 'Manoah' was the name of the Adelaide Hills estate of Sir Josiah Symon 1846-1934; 'F A S' may be a Symon family member. Sir Josiah Symon 'was born in Scotland and migrated to South Australia in 1866. He was called to the South Australian Bar in 1871 and became Attorney-General in a conservative government when he won the state seat of Sturt in 1881. Sir Josiah was the acknowledged leader of the South Australian Bar for over 30 years through his understanding of the law and skill as an advocate. His major contribution to Australian politics was in the area of Federation. He was a prominent member of the 1897-98 Australasian Federal Convention. He saw the major issues of Federation as equal representation of the states in the Senate; the solution of deadlocks between the two Houses of Parliament; the Murray River; and the establishment of an Australian Supreme Court to replace the Privy Council. The first three issues are still topical today the fourth was resolved several years ago. Sir Josiah was a person of broad scholarship. He wrote "Shakespeare the Englishman" in 1929 and was a member of several literary associations. The library at Sir Josiah's Upper Sturt estate "Manoah" consisted of 10000 law and literature volumes reflecting his interests in Shakespeare travel history and biography. He bequeathed his collection excluding approximately 2500 law books to the State Library where it remains an excellent example of a "gentleman's library". The terms of the bequest were that the books should not be marked or rebound which makes it a useful source of examples of original bindings particularly in pictorial cloth' State Library of South Australia website. Foolscap folio two reports 14 pages and 27 pages plus 3 full-page maps with assorted routes printed in red and a large folding colour map of Australia 440 × 560 mm with proposed railway routes printed in red. These include two out of Newcastle Water Plains Newcastle Waters; one of them heads due west to the WA border the other runs south-east to Bourke. Stapled as issued; the first report has a small initialled annotation to the top left-hand corner of the first page and both reports are a little creased; overall in very good condition. Commonwealth Parliamentary Papers Number 222 of 1926-27-28 only 835 copies and Number 15 of 1929 Second Session only 840 copies. The Commission empowered to function from the proclamation of the Northern Australia Act of 1926 on 1 February 1927 resulting in the proclamation of the Territories of Central and North Australia was responsible for Crown Lands throughout North and Central Australia plus the maintenance and operation of railways the construction and maintenance of roads ports and harbours the encouragement and establishment of air services and the like in North Australia. A further two annual reports were issued before the Act was repealed on 11 June 1930. 2 items. Government Printer unknown

Canberra: Government Printer 1930. Very Good. Canberra Government Printer 1930 and 1931. Foolscap folio two reports 29 and 31 pages. Stapled as issued; both items have a small initialled annotation to the top left-hand corner of an early page and the second one a small hole in the bottom margin of one leaf a minor production flaw; trifling signs of age and use; overall both items are in very good condition. Commonwealth Parliamentary Papers Number 50 of 1929-30 only 850 copies and Number 216 of 1929-30-31 only 790 copies. The Northern Australia Act of 1926 resulted in the proclamation of the Territories of Central and North Australia on 1 March 1927. Four annual reports were issued by the Government Resident R.H. Waddell before the Act was repealed on 11 June 1930. These are the third and fourth reports and contain detailed accounts by the 'Chief Protector of Aboriginals' totalling 5 pages plus reports on health policing agriculture mining and the like. 2 items. The major items are Parliamentary Paper Number 21 of 1909: 'Northern Territory. Transfer to the Commonwealth. Correspondence dated 15th October 1906 to 16th July 1909' 29 pages and a 1910 Memorandum: 'Northern Territory. Memorandum prepared under the direction of the Hon. L.E. Groom Minister for External Affairs July 1909 in connexion with the Bill for the acceptance of the Northern Territory with some later figures' 36 pages. The other papers range from one to four pages each. They are all folio and in fine condition with the exception of some slight chips to the top margins of two of the lesser items; print runs of 900 to 950 copies are noted in most instances. unknown
