A large lithographed full-colour pictorial poster 780 × 528 mm unmounted as issued and rolled and stored since then; in fine condition. Provenance: the surname 'Prescott' is written in ink at the foot of the verso. John Russell Prescott 1924-2011 was appointed Professor of Physics at the University of Adelaide in 1971 and from 1982 until his retirement in 1990 he was Elder Professor of Physics. 'His main research interest was in cosmic rays and he founded the cosmic ray research group at the University of Adelaide. While helping excavate at Roonka on the Murray he decided to apply his knowledge of physics to archaeology using the new technique of thermoluminescence dating. He set up a laboratory and luminescence soon began to dominate his academic research particularly after his notional retirement in 1990. <p>His fieldwork included Lake Mungo the Flinders Ranges and other sites in Australia China and Thailand. At the same time his interest in cosmic rays did not diminish and his paper on cosmic ray penetration in sediments is one of the most cited in the luminescence literature' information from his obituary in 'Adelaide Connect' on the University of Adelaide website. A vintage group photograph captioned 'Cricket Match Feb 02 Furreedpore' '1902 Faridpur' in another hand on the verso
Image size 229 × 286 mm on the original mount 252 × 304 mm with the caption in ink below the image behind a mat with interior quarter-round corners maximum visible image size 223 × 282 mm framed and glazed with a gilt fillet behind the glass. The caption is not visible when the mat is in position; the bottom left-hand corner of the mount and photograph has been broken away and repaired with a 75 mm diagonal crack across that corner visible but unobtrusive; there is a tiny amount of surface loss to the shirt of the player in the centre of the front row; overall a very appealing period piece in an early but not contemporary mat and frame. Furreedpore Faridpur formerly in East Bengal India now Bangladesh has important Australian connections exemplified by this photograph. Silas Mead 1834-1909 a Baptist minister emigrated to South Australia in July 1861; 'he preached at chapels in Adelaide and North Adelaide. Regular services began at White's Rooms and within a month a Baptist Church was constituted with twenty-six members. Inspired by Mead's enthusiastic leadership the congregation decided to build a large church in Flinders Street; it was opened on 19 May 1863. When its cost of £7000 was cleared by 1864 he established at Furreedpore India the first constituted Australian Baptist Foreign Mission and later helped to found similar societies in other Australian colonies'. His son Dr Cecil Silas Mead 1866-1940 followed closely in his footsteps; after graduating from the University of Adelaide in 1891 'he served as a medical missionary in eastern Bengal for twenty-nine years returned to Adelaide to teach anatomy in 1923-39 and died in June 1940' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. Dr Mead is second from the right in the top seated row; we have no reason to doubt that this photograph was once in his possession and for all intents and purposes it is unique. Adelaide: The Club 1959. Fine. Adelaide The Club 1959. Quarto one large sheet of card approximately 510 x 380 mm printed on one side only and folded twice down to size. An attractive menu card printed in red and blue throughout with the menu and toast list on the centrefold and the last page designed for autographs; in fine condition. And autographs there from this auspicious year in which the Club won the premiership in all three grades in the 1958-59 season. Sir Don Bradman proposed the toast to the Club and he is one of the signatories along with Clarrie Grimmett the Club coach. Among the more than fifty other signatures all but one in ink are the following Test and State players: Alec Barker Bert Bedford Leon Hill Alan Hitchcox Hitchcock Gil Langley Brian Leak Bob Lee Douglas McKay Roy Middleton 'Nip' Pellew Colin Pinch Ross Stanford Cecil Starr and Rolly Vaughton. The oldest former Club member A.P. May born in 1873 has also added his signature. The original owner of the menu has written his ownership details at the head of the first and last pages. The 12 signatures are Hassett Captain Benaud 12th man Harvey Hole Ian Johnson Bill Johnston Langley Lindwall McDonald Miller Morris and Ring. A heavyweight team by any account with eight former Invincibles and five future Australian Captains. <p>On the verso are the pencil signatures of the Victorian team for the match against Queensland in Brisbane 16-20 January 1953 SSM 444. The 12 signatures are Hassett Captain Chambers Fitchett 12th man Harvey Hill Ian Johnson Bill Johnston Loxton Colin McDonald Ian McDonald Ring and Thoms. Six of the team played with the Invincibles; in fact only Chambers Fitchett and Ian McDonald were not capped for Australia although Thoms and Hill played in only one and three Tests respectively. Victoria won by seven wickets with Johnston collecting ten wickets. unknown

A gelatin silver photograph 218 × 294 mm laid down as issued on the original printed mount of the photographer 'E. Ziegler 40 Elizabeth St Norwood' Ernest Charles Victor Ziegler active 1879-1925. The photograph and mount are in superb condition behind glass in the original frame. 'The Advertiser' 11 December 1931 sets the scene for these Inter-Collegiate matches: 'Today the annual cricket match between St Peter's and Prince Alfred Colleges will begin at the Adelaide Oval. Last year the game was played at Prince Alfred College the first time in the history of the matches first played in 1878 that the Adelaide Oval was not available. The match is one of the most important cricket events outside first-class matches in South Australia although in recent years it has failed to sic the importance and drawing power of inter-collegiate matches played before the war. Many famous cricketers have graduated from the college teams'. <p>The 1910 SPSC team - victorious to the tune of 232 runs - was no exception; sitting next to each other are C.E. Pellew and Vice-Captain A.G. Moyes. 'Nip' Pellew played for South Australia 1913-14 to 1928-29 the AIF Touring XI 1919 to 1919-20 and Australia ten Tests in 1920-21. Johnny Moyes a 'promising young cricketer . had represented 1912-15 South Australia making a century on debut been chosen 1914 for Australia in a tour cancelled due to World War I against South Africa and played for Victoria in 1920. In Sydney he achieved one of the highest individual scores in grade cricket when he made 218 runs in 83 minutes for the Gordon District Cricket Club in 1922. he served as a New South Wales selector 1926-27 and wanted Sir Donald Bradman to play for the State' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. For many years he worked as a journalist including fifteen years as sporting editor of 'The Sun' and he published thirteen books on cricket. In 1949 he began 'broadcasting sporting sessions for the Australian Broadcasting Commission. In 1950-51 he covered his first Test series against England. In 1955 he received a full-time contract. As a cricket broadcaster he became a household name in Australia and New Zealand in the 1950s and early 1960s' ADB. unknown

The photograph has slight surface silverfish damage not affecting the figure; original mount slightly foxed; recently matted ready for framing visible image size 335 × 280 mm. This full-length portrait features Howell with a cricket ball grasped firmly in his right hand standing alongside a wicket in the practice nets at Lord's in 1899. Displayed in a window cut into the rear of the modern mount is his bold ink surname signature. Small oblong folio 40 pages including the covers with illustrations on 24 pages 16 full-page and the front cover. Two-colour pictorial card covers recently reattached with the spine reinforced on the verso; an excellent copy of an absolute rarity. 'The Book has been written for the new regime of cricket; the batter bruise and bust cricket which has been thrust upon us. This travesty of an erstwhile noble sport demands new techniques to master it . We find after years of research that all previous books on cricket dealt mainly with batting bowling fielding and records. It is not now sufficient to wield a polished bat to execute a classic leg-glance or a neat on-drive' - you get the drift. The delicious irony is that this copy has the contemporary ownership details of a young Jeff Pash 1916-2005 then aged about 17. A few years later in 1939 he was awarded the Magarey Medal as the 'Fairest and Most Brilliant' player in the South Australian National Football League. Rigby Ltd paperback

One leaf in a small autograph album leaf size 80 × 138 mm signed in ink on the recto only by seven members of the Australian squad selected to tour England in 1930
The signatories are a'Beckett Fairfax Grimmett Hurwood Kippax Oldfield and Walker. The signatures were collected by the parents of a five year-old boy when the family travelled on the same ship as the cricketers on the voyage to England in early 1930. The leaves are the first two in an album with the printed image of the ship the Orient Line's SS 'Orford' on the front cover; some of the leaves are held in place with clear paper tape but the overall condition is very good. <p>The page was also signed in pencil by Victor Richardson and again by Walker but the young owner went over these signatures in ink after first having tried to erase the second Walker signature written at right angles along the right-hand side at the end of the other signatures. The balance of the squad's signatures on another page are similarly gone over. However among the seven decent signatures there are some famous names as well as some rare and interesting Test players. Ted a'Beckett played in four Tests; Alec Hurwood played in only two Tests; Charlie Walker toured twice 1930 and 1938 without playing in a Test match due to injuries and he was killed in action in a bombing mission over Germany in 1942. unknown

Two large-format gelatin silver photographs each 351 × 264 mm signed by the photographer in the negative with his studio inkstamp and manuscript reference number on the versos. Some silvering-out mainly around the edges; tiny creases to the corners of the white margins of one print; overall in excellent condition loosely inserted in the original cloth portfolio lettered in gilt on the padded front panel in excellent condition albeit with a spot of surface wear near the middle of the spine. Clarrie Grimmett the NZ-born Australian Test cricketer was one of the finest leg-spinners of his time. He is photographed in two different poses: head-and-shoulders from the side wearing his cap and blazer; and three-quarter length from the front wearing pullover and blazer with cap in hand. Lenare was the professional name of Leonard George Green 1883-1946; he specialised in society portraits at his London studio. <p>Provenance: Clarrie Grimmett originally purchased at the Christie's auction of the Clarrie Grimmett Collection sold in Melbourne on 13 May 1998. Grimmett played 37 Tests between 1924 and 1936 taking 216 wickets at an average of 24.21. His record for the fastest bowler to take 200 wickets in Tests achieved in his 36th match stood for 82 years and was broken only in 2018. His first-class record of 1424 wickets in 248 matches between 1911 and 1941 includes 513 wickets in his 79 Sheffield Shield matches. He was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1931 along with Don Bradman. He was posthumously inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 1996 as one of the ten inaugural members and in 2009 he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. 2 items. Instructions from the Commissioners of Audits approved by Queen Victoria's Commissioners of the Treasury which were provided to the Agents General of British colonies. <br /> <br /> Among the "Supplies" procured and forwarded to the colonies are included "Sub-Marine Telegraph Cables Steam Vessels Dredging Vessels" showing a keen involvement with advancing telegraph capabilities after the successful launching of the first telegraphic cable across the Atlantic by the Great Eastern in 1858. <br /> <br /> The instructions include two types of colonies "Crown" and "Representative" seemingly related to the application of the instructions which are "Strictly Applied" in Crown Colonies and "Applied when Practicable" in Representative Colonies. The Crown Colonies include many islands of the Caribbean - Bermuda Jamaica Grenada St. Lucia Bahamas Turks Islands and Trinidad. Bermuda is unusually listed "Convict Service only partly representative. The 'Map of Adelaide to face Title' referred to in the list of contents is excised from this copy. Original plain cream cloth with an orange paper title-label on the front cover; cloth a little stained and a little worn at the extremities with minor loss to the corners and spine; four small areas of the rear cover a little indented each with two short parallel cuts to the cloth; two conjugate leaves pages 85/86 and 107/108 torn out and screwed up at some stage were later repaired and reinserted with clear tape which stained the paper and have recently been expertly restored; rear free endpaper torn away leaving just a small attached fragment; a few other minor signs of age and use; overall a decent copy with the contemporary ownership details of A.L. Young ink-stamped and as 'A. Lincoln Young' written in ink on the front cover front and rear pastedowns and front free endpaper and added to the foot of the Adelaide directory with his address 25 Royal Exchange written there and on the front cover. The Adelaide directory listing name occupation and address runs to 47 pages; the Port Adelaide one is seven pages long. Considering the colony was founded barely two decades earlier it is an extensive yet unpretentious list. For example the four entries under MANN in Adelaide are 'Joseph carpenter Brown street J. bonnet maker Brown street Elizabeth mangle woman Gouger street His Honour Judge Sturt street'. At the foot of the calendar page for each month there are notes under the headings 'Garden' 'Flower Garden' Fruit Trees' and 'Field' on average about 12 lines each month. Ferguson 10603 not noting the preliminaries or the map; not recording any details of the binding. The State Library of NSW has a copy on Trove not recording the presence of the preliminaries or the 36 pages of advertisements but noting the dimensions of the map as 220 × 100 mm. Maroon binder's cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover retaining the original printed wrappers possibly lined with plain paper at an early date; front wrapper waterstained and a little marked with minor loss in two places along the plain top margin and with two short sealed tears; light marginal tidemarks to the rear wrapper; title page a little foxed; bottom corner edges a little marked bleeding very slightly into a few margins; a few top corner creases or missing tips to the first ten leaves; overall a decent copy. 'The following Papers are reprinted from "The Farm" section of the Melbourne "Leader". The writer left Melbourne on 1st September 1874 and returned on the 30th November. The early Papers were written during September in which month the country round Adelaide is seen at its very best. The areas of Gawler Kapunda Kooringa Hill River Estate Clare and surroundings were visited during October and the return journey between Adelaide and Mount Gambier including Strathalbyn Willunga Goolwa Hindmarsh Island Narracoorte and the Drainage Country took place during November' preface. The critical comments on contemporary vine cultivation and wine production make interesting reading. Visits were made to properties and individuals well-known to this day: Davenport Boothby Crompton Auld Mrs Penfold Thomas Elder and Birksgate Thomas Hardie sic and Bankside and 'Clare - Seven Hills and St. Aloysius' College' with numerous 'Notable Wine Growers' in the region mentioned. Original olive-green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and ruled and decorated in blind on the sides; cloth a little marked flecked and rubbed with light wear to the extremities and minimal conservation to the spine; front board slightly bowed; edges a little marked; textblock reinserted in the binding with the original endpapers retained and reinforced along the inner hinges with cloth of a similar colour; the front flyleaf has a short sealed tear and some residual glue on the recto it had been stuck fast to the pastedown and now has a tendency to curl a little and there are a few numerical annotations and the early ownership signatures of Carl D. and C.O. Lundberg; minimal signs of use and age internally; a very good copy of a great rarity. 'Essential; an important regional novel and nearly a comic masterpiece' states Depasquale 'A Critical History of South Australian Literature 1836-1930'; 'a rambling episodic undisciplined novel part romance part satire part detective novel and . part didactic religious novel'. The five-page introduction by the anonymous author is instructive as are the five pages Depasquale devotes to the work. The novel is set in the mid-north of South Australia; the author notes that Emu Flat the place at which the story begins is 'about four miles S.W. of Clare'. Wrappers with the full title page details repeated on the front cover expertly stabilized around the edges with minor infill; an excellent copy now loosely inserted in the rear pocket of a custom-made book-form cover with the map with short tears along a few folds expertly sealed in the front pocket. The journal was originally published with two maps; they are basically identical but one has added chromolithographic geological features and a key. This second map is not offered here. McLaren 12614 the dimensions for the maps are larger than those we have recorded here because McLaren invariably - and frustratingly - measures the size of the sheet of paper not the printed surface. See also McLaren 12616 for the foolscap folio edition South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 45 of 1893. The folio edition has a stated print run of 750 copies; apparently only 500 copies of the octavo edition were printed. This copy has a small paper label mounted on the inside front wrapper: 'Publication No. 30. Permanent Record. 1938. Govt. Printer' with the signature in ink of Frank Trigg the incumbent. Lindsay's introduction hints at some of the personality problems that ultimately led to the abandonment of the expedition. This final report includes his own journal 'also a copy of Mr. Wells' journal kept during my absence from the party. Mr. Streich's journal having been in my possession I was enabled to place his geological descriptions on the map. Not having seen the journals or reports of Messrs. Leech Elliot and Helms I cannot in any way refer to them. I regret that Mr. Leech should have seen fit not to hand in the pencil sketches made by him'. Government Printer paperback

The match which Australia won is remembered as Bradman's last test in which he was bowled for a duck in the second innings denying him a three-figure average. On a 16 x 11 cm leaf removed from an autograph album. In very good condition on lightly-aged paper. Presented portrait-style with 'ENGLAND - OVAL - 1948' neatly written at the head. Beneath this in two irregular columns are the signatures of the players with the exception of the signature of Eric Hollies bowler of the ball which dismissed Bradman in the Australian second innings the signature of substitute Reg Simpson present instead.
