Quarto two volumes in three viii 547; xii 256; and xii 511 pages with numerous line illustrations plus a large folding chart. Binder's cloth Volume I and Volume II Part 1 and original card covers Volume II Part 2; covers a little marked rubbed and sunned on the spines; mild signs of use and age; a very good set. Important monographs on yeasts; the text is in German. Provenance: Dr Lance Walters Chief Brewer at the South Australian Brewing Co. from 1944 to the 1980s with his signature in the cloth-bound volumes and his ink emphases and annotations in the first volume. The occasional company inkstamp is also present along with a small typed paper label signed by Walters on one front cover: 'This book must not be removed from the laboratory without permission'. The SA Brewing Company's Thebarton brewery and the laboratory closed down in June 2021 and its demolition is almost complete as at October 2022. 3 items. ‎A cord-bound loose-leaf cloth album 230 × 340 mm containing 22 gelatin silver photographs generally 120 × 200 mm or the reverse with some a little smaller mounted on both sides of card album leaves with printed captions. The first plate is a composite group portrait of the then-current Adelaide City Councillors under the Lord Mayor Sir Wallace Bruce; the rest show the Royal couple arriving officiating and generally being feted plus some of the rare treats they witnessed or received. <p>The first photograph carries the blindstamp of Hammer a local studio; four others carry the blindstamp of Walter McNeill 41 Rundle Street Adelaide; the others are uncredited. Most of the prints have a little silvering-out near the edges; the album is a little rubbed at the extremities with the bottom corners bumped; ownership details on the front pastedown; the overall condition is excellent. unknown‎

A couple of light creases one affecting the right-hand margin of the image; a few small chips and tears at the edges well clear of the printed surface and easily matted out; in very good condition. An original large-format chromolithograph from John Ednie Brown's 'Forest Flora of South Australia' 1882-1890 numbered 26 in the bottom right-hand corner of the sheet. <p>From soon after publication Harcourt Barrett was confronted with a popular conception that Rosa Fiveash was wholly or principally responsible for the plates as published. Eventually enough became too much . 'The entire work as issued from the Government Printing Office consisted of nine parts each part containing five plates making a total of forty-five plates. Of these forty-five plates Miss Fiveash only supplied thirty-two drawings in watercolour of the centre or main branch only. Miss Camilla Hammond sketched the Banksia Ornata and Mrs Smart sketched the native cherry and it was from these sketches that the drawings upon stone were made. The remaining eleven plates and title page together with all the additional work consisting of the various woods barks seed-vessels botanical sections and details of the flowers were drawn direct upon the stones from photos and natural specimens wholly and solely by me during the time I held the position of Chief Lithographer at the Government Printing Office. And further I may state that not only did I make the drawings which consisted of forty-five outlines and 400 colour-stones but was held responsible by Mr Brown for their proper reproduction in all their natural colours a matter in which he was very particular' 'Evening Journal' 23 April 1900. ‎Buckland Park Estate Sub-divisional Sale Wednesday October 18 1905 . and following day . Elder Smith & Co. Ltd. will offer by order of L.G. Browne Esq.‎

A large map printed on paper and mounted on linen as issued external dimensions 955 × 740 mm with freehold boundaries printed in blue and an inset locality plan 200 × 180 mm. Later manuscript addenda include red ink outlines on some blocks with acreages in blue ink; 'Sold' written in black ink on the most northerly blocks; a group of blocks close to St Kilda outlined and hatched in orange for 'ICI' Imperial Chemical Industries began construction of solar evaporation lagoons in the area in 1935; and some additional blocks added in ink close to Two Wells. The map has been folded into eight panels and the paper has flaked off in places particularly along the folds resulting in minor loss to the printed surface; a few light stains and minor signs of use and age; overall a decent copy of an item we find no record of in Trove or elsewhere. On offer was approximately 23000 acres of freehold land and 13000 acres of leasehold land. The 'Narracoorte Herald' Tuesday 24 October 1905 contains a report on the sale which took place the previous Wednesday: 'the well-known Buckland Park Estate which has been subdivided . is being offered to the public in blocks of from 40 to 1800 acres. There was a splendid attendance landowners and pastoralists from all parts of the state being present. Competition was however very dull and only nine sic lots found purchasers at the auction sale. The following lots were sold: Block 5 186 acres £3 2s. 0d. per acre; block 1 118 acres 30s. per acre; block 53 60 acres £7 per acre; block 54 57 acres £7 per acre; block 55 40 acres £7 per acre; block 56 40 acres £7 per acre; block 83 196 acres with leasehold given in £1 Is. per acre; block 84 105 acres with leasehold given in £4 per acre. The blocks offered on Wednesday comprised only the poorer quality country. The remainder of the estate will be sold privately'. A successful conclusion to that sale apparently did not take place for another five years. The South Australian pastoralists' who's who 'Our Pastoral Industry' Adelaide 1910 records that the pioneering pastoralist George Brooks 1849-1926 and his son Edmund Albert Brooks purchased 'the picturesque estate at Buckland Park comprising 20000 acres . situated about 25 miles north of Adelaide' from Leonard Browne in 1910 the property is featured under 'The Brownes of Moorak Buckland Park and Booboorowie' pages 137-156. A vintage gelatin silver print 130 × 96 mm. trifling chip to one corner; two minute abrasions over the pupils; in excellent condition. In addition to her contemporary ink signature on the print Buttfield has inscribed and signed the verso at a later date in ballpoint pen '7 Nancy Buttfield Daughter of E.W.H.'. Nancy Buttfield 1912-2005 served as senator for South Australia for over sixteen years between 1955 and 1974 with one hiatus representing the Liberal Party. She was the daughter of Sir Edward Wheewall Holden co-founder of General Motors-Holden's Ltd. and was herself made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1972. <p>The photographer was Adelaide portraitist Blodwen Thomas; her ink stamp on the verso states this is a proof print. Small oblong quarto 183 × 245 mm 16 pages with numerous two-colour line illustrations plus the colour-pictorial covers. Colour-pictorial card covers featuring Roy Nockolds artwork with colour illustrations on the inside panels; covers lightly rubbed with a short crease to the front top corner; an excellent copy internally fine. Donald Campbell has signed his portrait printed on the first page done at a book launch in Adelaide at the time. <p>The 1963 World Land Speed Record attempt at Lake Eyre was abandoned when a 20-year drought broke and the lake was flooded; a successful attempt was made the following year. Most of the illustrations relate to the construction of the Bluebird-Proteus CN7 vehicle used in both attempts. <p>Offered together with an original gelatin silver photograph 191 × 236 mm of a group of seven men leaning on or standing near the vehicle on the salt pan at Lake Eyre. The photograph was taken by Leonard George Gallagher employed at the time by the Weapons Research Establishment in Adelaide; he was at Lake Eyre as part of the Commonwealth Government's contribution to the record attempt. He was not an official photographer but he produced a unique album for his own benefit which we sold some years ago. This print has a few creases; a better example of it was present in the album. The Story of Donald Campbell's Land Speed Record at Lake Eyre in 1964' by John Pearson London Collins 1965; a very good copy with the dustwrapper comes with the ephemera. 3 items. Flush-cut card covers slightly foxed on the inside surfaces; essentially a fine copy with the fine colour-pictorial dustwrapper. This copy is signed on the title page by the author and signed and dated 1970 by James Cant under his frontispiece photographic portrait. The handwriting clearly shows the effects of advanced multiple sclerosis the disease that had confined Cant to a wheelchair from the mid-1960s. James Montgomery Cant 1911-1982 was married to fellow-Australian artist Dora Chapman. Loosely inserted in the book is a small card 130 × 100 mm printed with a monochrome illustration 'Drawing . 1963' by him on the recto; it is inscribed on the verso 'Ruth & Mervyn wishing you a very happy & prosperous New Year. Love Dora & Jim'. The recipients were fellow-artists Ruth Tuck and Mervyn Smith. A small four-panel catalogue for the James Cant Exhibition at the 1974 Adelaide Festival of Arts is also loosely inserted. 3 items. Brolga Books paperback‎

A panoramic gelatin silver photograph 128 × 322 mm unmounted as issued with the ink-stamp of the photographer on the verso. The print has a slight longitudinal curl and a few light creases near the right-hand edge; overall in excellent condition. The photograph was taken as the landscaping in the front of the building was being undertaken; the horse-drawn roller seems an anachronism against the backdrop of the impressive Art Deco facade. The State Library of South Australia has in its collection a raking shot of the building taken from the north-east showing the completed landscaping SLSA B 7265. 'Centennial Hall built to celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Colony later State of South Australia and to house the 1936 Centennial Empire Exhibition was opened on 20 March 1936. It was considered to be a significant historical landmark and was one of the few remaining examples of 1930s Art Deco architecture in Adelaide. However the building developed "concrete cancer" and was closed at the end of the 2005 Royal Show because it was unsafe. Demolition of Centennial Hall commenced on Wednesday 18 July 2007' Wikipedia. There follow various tables three full-page 'trees' sections on the Criminal Investigation Branch Information Bureau Communications Section and other departments and a final 'Miscellaneous' section p.21 ending with 'Finance - Police expenditure' from 1956-7 to 1964-5. ‎Scandinavia Danish 1930. Good. Each card is illustrated with a printed photographic facial portrait of 8 children identified below by their respective countries. The image titled "Australien" portrays a child who appears to be from the far North Queensland wearing a necklace that looks to be composed of hide and possibly shells. The boy's name is Toby from the famed Cunningham troupe circus performers which toured the U.S. in 1880-1890s. The images portray visual cultural identification with the national characteristics of costume facial and racial features of each nationality. The verso is printed in two colors with the word 'Fred' meaning Peace at center surrounded by olive leaves and greetings in the languages of the children pictured on the front. The Australien sic child message is in English sadly. There is a good representation of the countries of Europe South America Scandinavia as well as China Persia Japan Ceylon Java Siam Haiti Hawaii Jamaica Costa Rica Tunis Liberia and Cyprus. <br /> <br /> 7 cards 56 b&w images 9 1/4 x 6 1/4" stiff card stock corners bumped slt dusty some pencil marks and orange x's not interfering with images. unknown‎

Matching original half maroon roan and cloth lettered in gilt on the spines and front covers; leather a little rubbed and scuffed with minor wear to the extremities and the head and foot of the spine of the first volume expertly renewed; cloth flecked mottled and a little marked; endpapers in the first volume a little tanned with the margins discoloured by the leather turn-ins; trifling signs of age and use; a very good set internally excellent of these rarely-seen first edition volumes. An important series of lengthy biographical sketches of SA pioneering pastoralists. 'Publication of the series began in the "Adelaide Stock and Station Journal" on January 10 1923 and continued weekly until August 10 1927. During that period a total of 230 articles was published and the number of pastoralists to receive attention is in the neighbourhood of 300. No really representative pioneer sheep-farmer or cattle-breeder who operated in South Australia has been overlooked and in many cases it has been possible to retrieve from almost complete oblivion the interesting records of lesser lights' foreword to the second volume. A short article in 'The News' 8 July 1941 relating to a substantial gift of books and papers to the SA Archives by A.T. Saunders states in part that 'Among the books is a copy of the very rare first volume of Cockburn's "Pastoral Pioneers of South Australia"'. We recall reading in one of James Dally's catalogues in our early days in the late 1970s that many copies of the first volume of this work were destroyed in a fire. Although we cannot substantiate this fact in our experience it is indeed an absolute rarity. <p>Provenance: Alexander Cockburn brother of the compiler of these volumes. The verso of the title page is inscribed 'To Alexander Cockburn from his son Malcolm as a Souvenir of the first fee received by him for his professional services Dec 1925'. Platts Bookseller Hindley Street . 1845. Octavo xii last blank 106 pages plus a folding etching but lacking the folding frontispiece map noted by Ferguson. Original bright green wrappers with the full title page details repeated on the front cover with the date of publication now added; wrappers a little marked but expertly conserved the front cover is now lined on the verso stabilizing a long tear and filling in some minor loss to the edges; title page a little marked; occasional chips and dog-ear creases to the uncut edges; trifling signs of age and use but essentially a very agreeable copy. The State Library of South Australia has a copy of this item with the map and it's a beauty - a hand-coloured lithograph 322 × 213 mm produced in 'Goodwood nr Adelaide' in 1845. However reading between the lines a case may be made for stating that not all copies were issued with the map. Its absence here notwithstanding this is by any account a very rare publication and worthy of serious consideration on at least two counts. The folding plate is an etching paper size approximately 220 × 280 mm of 'Ridley's Reaping Machine. S. Australia' signed and dated in the plate 'NRF 1845'. The artist is Frederick Robert Nixon circa 1817-1860 who arrived in Adelaide in May 1838 to take up a position as assistant surveyor. In 1845 he published 'Twelve Views in Adelaide and its Vicinity South Australia. Drawn etched and printed by F.R. Nixon'; it was the earliest South Australian plate book. He was a self-taught artist who 'had to manufacture all his machinery for preparing and pressing his etchings . they are superior as works of art and accurately as well as pleasingly depict the scenes which they represent 'The South Australian' 21 February 1845. Nixon left Adelaide in May 1846 bound for Mauritius where he died in 1860. Kerr's 'The Dictionary of Australian Artists' 1992 records that the Ridley etching was the only other one he is known to have produced. There is a lengthy chapter 10 pages on the Aboriginal inhabitants and the chapter on horticulture contains seven pages on vines and wine-making with the information credited to M. Provenance: Frank Trigg 1876-1963 with his personal 'Conchological Library' bookplate on the front pastedowns his annotations on the front free endpapers and his occasional signature or initials. Frank Trigg 'held the office as treasurer and committeeman of the Field Naturalists' section of the RGGS for a number of years. He was also a past chairman of the Malacological Society' Port Elliot 'Southern Argus' Thursday 25 April 1935. He was also the SA Government Printer from 1935 to 1941. <p>Many of these issues contain contributions by him in his capacity as secretary of the South Australian Shell Club. The report published in 1812 was the result of a report by a Parliamentary Select Committee to explore the future of transportation of convicts to New South Wales a system that had operated for almost 25 years. It includes a complete transcript of evidence given by many important witnesses including former Governor John Hunter former Governor William Bligh Scottish Martyr Maurice Margarot Matthew Flinders First Fleet chaplain Richard Johnson and many other colonial officials.
