‎Royal Hayman Hotel Hayman Island‎

‎1950. Very good condition. Early advertising card for the famous Australian luxury resort and hotel developed in the 1950s by millionaire Reginald Ansett founder of Ansett Australia an Australian air line group based in Melbourne. With color illustration of two women and a young man in bathing costume on a pristine beach. Hayman Island the most northerly of the Whitsunday Group was named for George Nares' navigator Thomas Hayman. In the 1930s a biological research laboratory was established there by Edwin Embury & was soon joined by the Great Barrier Reef Game Fish Angling Club which attracted game fishermen such as Zane Grey American novelist and filmmaker. Ansett acquired the island in 1947 and worked on the Royal Hayman Hotel which opened in 1950 with a Royal Charter granted in anticipation of a royal visit. 5 x 5 1/2" unknown‎

‎Shade of a Dandy. Original pen & ink caricature of an early 19th century man whose shadow suggests a Kangaroo‎

‎1820. An intriguing item. The image seems to be inspired by the anecdote related in James Boswell's book "Life of Johnson" where he describes Dr. Samuel Johnson in 1793 hopping around the room to explain to people how a kangaroo moved. The hand-penned caption below entitles it "Shade of a Dandy" the caricature poking fun of the ridiculousness of the gentleman with his frizzy hairstyle pointed nose and chin holding a monocle. He stands in the corner of a room and the shadow he casts on the wall looks like a kangaroo with a suggestion of a halter. The room has flower-decorated floor covering a border around the wall which also has a framed landscape hanging and a window with drapes behind him. Kangaroos have held a long fascination for the Northern hemisphere particularly after their arrival on English shores with Joseph Banks fresh from Cook's first voyage in 1769. The man's cut of coat and slim trousers suggest an early 19th century style. 7x10" on paper 8 x 10 3/8". With some later faintly bizarre coloring on the figure of the man in either pastel or crayon. Mounted on a larger sheet of blue paper perhaps from an early album. Blue backing sheet with a closed tear otherwise in very good condition. unknown‎

A scarce program brochure pertaining to the early Australian Navy just three years after its creation in 1910 by the passage of the Naval Defense Act. The demand for an autonomous Australian navy independent of the British Admiralty had been growing since about 1907 when Prime Minister Deakin had sought British approval which was initially rejected. However following the enthusiastic Australian public reaction to the visit of the American Great White Fleet the tide had turned and by 1910 the HMAS Parramatta and the Yarra were both launched. Dr. Cobb was one of the first to be appointed to the New South Wales Department of Agriculture as Government Vegetable Pathologist where he investigated parasitic diseases of plants and farm stock. He later was appointed to the Hawaiian Sugar Planter's Association Experiment Station in Honolulu having researched diseases of sugar cane. The publication includes many b&w printed photographic images of mechanical harvesters in the field with the parts numbered and identified in captions as well as horse powered combined harvesters. He was commissioned by the Australian War Memorial board as an official war artist and then painted watercolors of RAAF aircraft. An important imaginary voyage to Australia: a 'landmark' in the development of the French voyage novel Atkinson in its original full calf decorated binding. <br /> <br /> A Robinsonade account which predates Defoe. It is complete with the ship wreck exploration conflict with local inhabitants stand off and final rescue by a passing ship. It is a reasonable representation of the Australian continent and its challenges along with a realistic estimation of the importance of mining and irrigation to Australia that "foreshadow what has actually come to pass in modern Australia." Friederich <br /> <br /> The title page is falsely dated 1710. In his deep analyses of Tyssot de Patot and his publications Aubrey Rosenberg has concluded that this 1710 printing with the armillary sphere device on the title page with the base pointing to the left is indeed the first edition and was published between 1714 and 1718. "Robinson Crusoe" first appeared in 1719.<br /> <br /> 12mo viii 508pp. Bound in the original full brown calf binding gilt spine in 6 compartments raised bands gilt device decoration on spine and outer dentelles. First edition of this uncommon third automobile/truck expedition which equipped with two 6-wheel Morris trucks started in Port Hedland May 1928 and then drving via De Grey Pardoo and Wallal homesteads north to Broome. After Broome they pushed onto Fitzroy Crossing and Hall Creek hunting gold and then reached the Tanami goldfields and then prospected along the Lander River visiting Brooks’ Soak a traditional Warlpiri Soak which Fred Brook was illegally appropriating. Their mining expedition overlapped the subsequent tragic Conniston Massacres of Australian Warlpiri Anmatyerre and Kaytetye Indigenous Peoples in retribution for the killing of Fred Brooks. Terry’s party quickly moved on and headed to Alice Springs followed the Finke River to Horseshoe Bend Oodnadatta Hawker Adelaide and later Melbourne. Terry was quite taken with the Morris trucks which averaged 5-18 mpg every 250 miles and the lead truck only suffered 41 flat tires in their Dunlop tires. Second edition of this rousing first-hand memoir of one of Sir Taylor’s flights with Kingsford Smith flying the Lady Southern Cross in their Lockheed Altair monoplane making the first eastward trans-Pacific flight from Australia to the United States in October-November 1934. They experienced bad weather over Fiji struggled through repairs to the fuel and oil systems in Hawaii but arrived safely in Oakland Nov. 4 1934. ‎Two rare ephemeral items associated with the Bank of South Australia dating from the early 1840s‎

‎1 A manuscript personal promissory note 90 × 167 mm dated Adelaide 24 October 1840 - 'Three months after date pay to my order Thirty Pounds value received. F.W. Allen. To C.W. Stuart Esqre'. Stuart has written across it 'Accepted Payable at the Bank of South Australia'. It was subsequently stamped by the Bank of South Australia Adelaide when it was paid on 27 January 1841. The verso is endorsed by F.W. Allen C. Crispe and 'For the Bank of South Australia Edwd Stephens Manager'. Apart from two vertical creases and a tiny spike hole it is in fine condition. <p>2 A printed Bank of South Australia cheque 80 × 180 mm printed by Batho and Bingley London with manuscript insertions - 11 February 1841 from C.W. Stuart to Harry Lechahdee for 3 pounds. A bank stamp on it indicates it was paid out in Adelaide on 15 February 1841. It is endorsed on the verso by Robert Champlay an indecipherable signature and three small Xs. It is lightly creased with a tiny spike hole; on the verso there is a discoloured band denoting the outer surfaces when the item was originally folded; basically in excellent condition. It goes without saying that these are utterly rare ephemeral items dating from when the colony was barely four years old. However because of this we are able to identify most of the signatories thus giving these trifles much greater weight. <p>Edward Stephens 1811-1861 was appointed cashier and accountant of the South Australian Company in 1836; he arrived in the 'Coromandel' on 17 January 1837 at Holdfast Bay. 'There he set up his office in a tent but at first business was slight. He was induced to sign a letter to Governor Sir John Hindmarsh asking for a public meeting to reconsider the site of Adelaide. Although in February the meeting decided in favour of Colonel William Light's choice Stephens did not hesitate to buy eight city acres 3.2 ha when they were auctioned and later became very friendly with Light. Stephens fell foul of Hindmarsh and was rebuked by George Fife Angas for dabbling in politics' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. In 1840 he became the Adelaide manager of the Bank of South Australia. Charles William Stuart ~1811-1891 arrived in the colony in 1836 and became Acting Police Commissioner during Alexander Tolmer's extended absences on overland gold escort duties in 1852-53. Tolmer's dismissal in November 1853 was in part due to his involvement 'in demeaning disputes with his subordinates' not least Stuart. Frederick William Allen 1813-1850 arrived on the 'Buffalo' and became a publican. Clement Crispe ~1804-1857 arrived in 1837 on the 'John Renwick' and was a butcher and farmer. Robert Champlay was married in Adelaide on 30 January 1840. Most of the biographical details have come from the 'Biographical Index of South Australians 1836-1885'. An original gelatin silver photograph 156 × 114 mm on the original mount 246 × 202 mm with the blindstamp of the photographer in the bottom right-hand corner. Tiny surface chip to the emulsion on the bottom edge; in excellent condition. The details identifying the scene were written in pencil on the mount of another example of this photograph we have handled. Light Pass as it is known today is in the Barossa Valley 3 kms from Nuriootpa. The tiny hamlet is home to two Lutheran churches the Immanuel and the Strait Gate. The Immanuel Lutheran Church explains 'What makes us unique' on its website: 'We enjoy special services such as Harvest Festival Vineyard Service Easter Services Seed and Soil Service and many others throughout the year'. A very rare item of local history with content that is far more substantial than its title suggests: for example there are thirteen pages of well-illustrated text devoted to the fruit and vine industries. ‎Der Kupferstich zeigt zwei Darstellungen aus dem Lebensbereich australischer/tasmanischer Ureinwohner. Am linken unteren Bildrand die gedruckte Signatur Schmuzers. Eine Fotokopie des Textblattes in deutscher Sprache liegt dem Blatt bei. - Der altkolorierte Kupferstich stammt aus Bertuchs Bilderbuch für Kinder (Bd. 6 Taf. 32), das in Weimar zwischen 1790 und 1830 in 12 Bänden erschienen ist. Das Werk enthält 1185 kolorierte Bildtafeln, mit insgesamt etwa 6000 einzelnen Stichen, die überwiegend von Lehrern, Schülern und Absolventen der Fürstlichen freien Zeichenschule zu Weimar angefertigt wurden. - Das Blatt ist leicht angerändert, etwas gebräunt und leicht fleckig. Contemporary full morocco; spine tooled in gilt; front cover extensively stamped in gilt with the design repeated in blind on the rear cover; all edges gilt and lightly marked; slight wear to the extremities now expertly conserved; marbled endpapers and adjacent leaves a little creased and marked; paper a little tanned; trifling signs of age and use; in excellent condition. The elaborate binding was likely executed by Emanuel Spiller the South Australian Government Printer at the time. Spiller's name appears as exhibitor and jury-member of competitions and exhibitions of binding and printing throughout the 1880s. The 'Sydney Mail and New South Wales Advertiser' for 27 March 1880 carries a lengthy article by John Plummer on colonial bookbindings displayed at the Sydney International Exhibition noting that '. in the South Australian Court Mr. E. Spiller the Government printer of Adelaide occupies the foremost rank'. <p>Although offered primarily as a fine example of colonial binding the Acts contained in this volume numbers 196 to 238 as well as nine Private Acts are not without interest. There are numerous railways and tramways acts as well as acts on subjects as diverse as Chinese immigration the Adelaide Synagogue mining inebriates and the substantial 'No. 237. Octavo three volumes 271 316 and 504 pages with numerous illustrations including 6 colour plates in the first volume many from sketches by John McConnell Black. Pictorial papered boards lightly rubbed and bumped; edges of the first volume a little tanned; surname signature on the front free endpaper of each volume; an excellent set. John McConnell Black 1855-1951 emigrated to South Australia in 1877; he 'eventually became a senior reporter and respected editorialist on the "Advertiser" also working as a Hansard reporter on a sessional basis until he was 74. A legacy received on his mother's death enabled Black to retire from journalism in 1903 and to tour South America and Europe. On his return he concentrated on botany. In 1914 he was bequeathed a further legacy by his sister Helen and began working on indigenous flora. Although self-trained he was clearly the best systematic botanist in the State for almost fifty years' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. 'The Flora of South Australia' two editions was his major contribution to Australian botany. 3 items.
