A collection of nine vintage photographs showing the construction of the Adelaide Railway Station between 1926 and 1928
Very Good. Nine vintage gelatin silver prints eight approximately 220 × 285 mm one 138 × 206 mm all but two captioned or dated on the verso. Some prints with some residue on the verso from previous mounting; two with drawing pin-holes in some corners one of them with slight surface loss near a bottom corner the other with slight loss to a top corner; some with trifling chips or creases at the extremities; overall in excellent condition. The earliest image dated June 1926 shows the site on North Terrace before the commencement of construction; two show the station platforms in October 1926 and March 1927; two show the railway yards at the approach to the station one before construction one in December 1927; and four show the progressive construction of the western southern and eastern frontages of the station dated between April 1927 and March 1928. <p>An interesting observation by Paul McGuire appeared in 'The New Triad' Volume 2 Number 7 1 July 1928: 'The Railway Department also has been showing its superiority to mere prettiness too. A magnificent station is nearing completion and the Assembly hall has already revealed itself as a splendidly conceived piece far superior to anything of its kind in Australia. The walls are scarcely finished and they are already blotted with posters dodgers and various advertising signs. The architects themselves have protested but in this case too we will be pleasureably sic surprised if the official mind sees beyond its balance sheets'. <p>We have not identified the photographer or traced these particular images in institutional collections or elsewhere but they have the appearance of official photographs by a professional. 9 items. unknown

She was the 'first female Artistic Director and the first to be appointed to direct two consecutive festivals in 1998 and 2000. Archer's program for the 20th Adelaide Festival was based on the themes of the sacred and the profane. The theme was reflected in the controversial festival poster the Musical Madonna a representation of the Madonna playing an accordion. Printed yellow wrappers lightly creased and marked with minor loss to the ends of the spine; small burst with minor loss to one leaf affecting a few words in a handful of lines of text in one column recto and verso; small light stains to the bottom edge of the five meteorological graphs at the rear; a few creases marks and other signs of age and handling; overall in excellent condition. The pamphlet comprises a title page list of office-bearers and members and the report for the year each one leaf verso blank followed by 11 papers read at the society's meetings during the year. The papers are: <p>'Irrigation' by C.S. Hare 2 pages with a small diagram; <p>'The Camel in South Australia' by J.S. Lloyd 4 pages; <p>'The Use and Properties of Plants. No. II' by Richard Schomburgk 2 pages; <p>'The Currents of the Air and the Ocean. No. III' by Benjamin Herschel 3 pages; <p>'The Importance of Silk Culture as a Branch of Colonial Industry' by T.S. Patterson 6 pages; <p>'The Influence of Forests on Climate' by Richard Schomburgk 2 pages being the leaf with minor loss; <p>'Light Railway Construction' by A.F. Lindsay 5 pages; <p>'The Cause of Disease in Silkworms' by Richard Schomburgk 1 page; and <p>'Some Observation on the Rainfall at Adelaide and the Connection between Meteorological Changes and the Yield of Wheat' by Benjamin Herschel 3 pages plus 5 plates containing meteorological graphs. Loosely inserted is a lengthy newspaper clipping from 'The Register' 19 May 1858 on 'Camels in Australia' based heavily on information supplied by Arthur Horrocks brother of the ill-fated explorer John Ainsworth Horrocks. <p>The Adelaide Philosophical Society was founded in 1853 and in 1880 became the Royal Society of South Australia. This annual report lists the name of the 73 current members: the president His Excellency Sir James Fergusson 12 'Honorary and Corresponding Members' and 60 ordinary members. The final paragraph of the short report will sound familiar to anyone who has served on a committee: 'The Council wish to impress upon members the necessity of paying their subscriptions punctually; during the past year out of sixty-seven ordinary members it appears only thirty-nine have paid their annual subscriptions'. These extremely small numbers let alone the passage of 150 or more years must account for the utmost rarity of this publication. <p>Provenance: Thomas Gill 1849-1923 the South Australian historian and bibliographer with his ownership signature on the front cover; later the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia South Australian Branch with its stamp ditto. 'Gill was also a governor of the Public Library Museum and Art Gallery of South Australia from 1896 until his death and a member of the Library Association of Australasia. He wrote "The History and Topography of Glen Osmond" 1905 for the Glen Osmond Institute. Gill was treasurer of the South Australian branch of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia from its inception in 1885 until his death. The society's acquisition of the valuable York Gate Library was largely due to his energy and enthusiasm. His library was sold to the society for £300 as his will directed' but numerous items from his collection mainly duplicates of existing holdings in the RGSSA library were later sold. London: Thomas M'Lean 1841. Very good condition. A lovely mezzotint engraved portrait of the Queen 1792 - 1849 dressed in widow's garb following the death of her husband King William IV of England. The capital city of the Australian state of South Australia was named in honor of the Queen when it was founded in 1836. South Australia was formed under the Act for the Colonization of South Australia of 1834 and was intended to be a haven of civil and religious liberties. The portrait of the Queen is a charming one; she gazes steadily out her hair in braids with a black lace veil over her head and around her shoulders. Engraved by Henry Thomas Ryall 1811 - 1867 engraver to Queen Victoria and based on the painting by William Charles Ross 1794 - 1860. 13 1/2 x 17 1/2". Image printed and laid on to thicker paper; with very slt toning to thicker paper at outer edges o/w very good. Thomas M'Lean unknown

In September 1864 Goode moved his premises from 155 Rundle St. to number 69. He also built up a lucrative trade in photographic material including chemicals that were "made to his special order and suitable for use in a hot climate". "In September 1865 Goode took his camera to the top of the partly-constructed Albert Tower. and the "following month Goode again went to the top of the Albert Tower but this time he had a stereoscopic camera." Four original albumen paper photographs mounted on one sheet of card from a loose-leaf album. They are numbered and captioned on the mount - No. 10: General Post Office. No. 12: King William St. No. 14: King William St. No. 16: Rundle St
The gloss-paper prints are each approximately 150 × 200 mm. The three streetscapes have the title and studio credited in the negative. The first two items are slightly foxed and there is a tiny hole in the sky in the first one; the gloss surface is lightly scuffed; overall the condition is very good. According to information supplied by the family see State Library of South Australia B 71188/2 Hobart-born Alfred Augustus Stump trained as a photographer under J.W. Beattie before moving to Adelaide and setting up his own studio. Davies and Stanbury list Stump and Co. at various addresses in King William Street and Rundle Street in the city from 1888. A short paragraph in the 'Narracoorte Herald' on Friday 13 July 1894 contains the following: 'A fire occurred in the premises of Messrs. Stump and Co.'s photographic studio Hindley-street at 4 o'clock on Wednesday morning. The place was completely gutted nearly everything being destroyed'. The studio was in fact at 35A King William Street on the northern corner with Hindley Street. These photographs come from an incomplete and damaged loose-leaf album purchased at auction in Adelaide in August 1971: the purchaser pencilled in 'supposed to be c.1890'. The album has the appearance of a studio stock book with numbers on the captions of the remaining plates ranging from 10 to 218. One of the photographs Number 179 showed the studio at 35A King William Street presumably taken some time between its establishment in 1892 and the fire in July 1894 giving the supposed date of the album some basis in fact. unknown

Oblong octavo 143 × 230 mm comprising an introductory leaf a leaf of descriptive captions and 15 leaves of plates all printed rectos only containing a total of 79 images. Flush-cut quarter cloth and decorated card covers printed in gold and light and dark blue; covers lightly marked with a few small light pink stains to the front cover; notwithstanding an excellent copy. All plate leaves depict one or more illustrations from photographs against a watercolour pictorial background with calligraphic titles. There is only one full-page plate proper. Trove records copies in four institutions as well as what appear to be later editions: 'Gall's Glimpses of Adelaide and South Australia: 80 Viewlets' circa 1902 and 'Gall's Glimpses of Adelaide and South Australia: 100 Viewlets' circa 1904. Duodecimo 170 × 113 mm a cased leporello comprising 12 original albumen silver photographs each approximately 95 × 150 mm mounted on cards captioned and bordered in red joined together with cloth hinges. Red cloth lettered and decorated in gilt and decorated in black and blind; cover lightly marked plain spine a little sunned; an excellent copy the contents are in fine condition. The views are mainly street scenes and public buildings; all of them are illustrated on our website. Two of the plates are signed in the negative 'Sweet Adelaide' and the balance of the photographs are almost certainly his work. We have a similar item in blue cloth entitled 'Photographic Views of Adelaide South Australia. Series '; only two of the images are the same 'Rundle Street & The Arcade' and 'Coast Natives' Wurlie'. <p>Captain Samuel White Sweet 1825-1886 was a sea captain surveyor and photographer: after he was censured when his ship ran aground in 1875 he 'retired from the sea opened a photographic studio in Adelaide and concentrated on landscapes. With his horse-drawn dark room he travelled through South Australia taking hundreds of skilful pictures of the outback stations and homesteads. The colony's foremost documentary photographer of the 1870s in the early 1880s he was one of the first to use the new dry-plate process' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. <p>'Coast Natives' Wurlie' was clearly taken at the same time as the scene in the frontispiece to Taplin's 'The Folklore Manners Customs and Languages of the South Australian Aborigines' published in 1879 and illustrated with original photographs by Samuel Sweet. Duodecimo 170 × 113 mm a cased leporello comprising 12 original albumen silver photographs each approximately 95 × 150 mm mounted on cards captioned and bordered in red joined together with cloth hinges. Blue cloth lettered and decorated in gilt and decorated in black and blind; cloth lightly rubbed at the extremities; card mounts uniformly tanned; a near-fine example with the contents in fine condition. The views are mainly street scenes and public buildings; all of them are illustrated on our website. Three of the plates are signed in the negative 'Sweet Adelaide' albeit an attempt has been made in two of them to mask these details and the balance of the photographs are almost certainly his work. We have a similar item in red cloth entitled 'Photographic Views of Adelaide South Australia. Series II'; only two of the images are the same 'Rundle Street and The Arcade' and 'Coast Natives' Wurlie'. <p>Captain Samuel White Sweet 1825-1886 was a sea captain surveyor and photographer: after he was censured when his ship ran aground in 1875 he 'retired from the sea opened a photographic studio in Adelaide and concentrated on landscapes. With his horse-drawn dark room he travelled through South Australia taking hundreds of skilful pictures of the outback stations and homesteads. The colony's foremost documentary photographer of the 1870s in the early 1880s he was one of the first to use the new dry-plate process' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. <p>'Coast Natives' Wurlie' was clearly taken at the same time as the scene in the frontispiece to Taplin's 'The Folklore Manners Customs and Languages of the South Australian Aborigines' published in 1879 and illustrated with original photographs by Samuel Sweet. Octavo ii title leaf xviii 476 civ appendix and index pages. Early half tan calf and marbled papered boards with a contrasting leather title-label on the spine; covers a little rubbed and scuffed with the head of both joints slightly cracked but firm; endpapers and adjacent leaves offset mainly from the leather turn-ins; minimal scattered light foxing; early marginal emphases in pencil and rarely in ink in particular to the later sections relating to the institutions and processes of government; related annotations on several pages; overall an excellent copy. Western's apparent aim was to demonstrate the superiority of the English constitution over all other forms of government. In that context the parochial provenance of this copy is hard to beat. The ownership signature of 'J.F. Burton Adelaide 1850' appears at the head of the title page and on the front free endpaper without the place-name. The latter is also signed in pencil 'J.H. Fisher' James Hurtle Fisher around which George Fife Angas has written 'Sept 21 1853. Presented by JHF to G.F. Angas'. The full name of George Fife Angas is also written there in pencil in what we recognize as a later secretarial hand indicating in our experience that the book came originally from Angas's library. Sir James Hurtle Fisher 1790-1875 'was one of the most important pioneers of South Australia': a lawyer he was appointed first Resident Commissioner of South Australia and arrived in the colony on the 'Buffalo' with the Governor's party. He eventually became a leader of the South Australian Bar 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. Angas needs no introduction; suffice to say the provenance takes some beating. We know little about Burton other than that he was an Adelaide solicitor; he is mentioned as such occasionally in the local newspapers of the day. John Richards & Co hardcover

Cloth slightly flecked and rubbed; spine lightly sunned and creased; uncut top edge and the leaves adjacent to the boards a little foxed; two tiny punctures near the head of the rear cover; an excellent copy. The background to this biography of George Fife Angas 1789-1879 is not without interest and it is to be gleaned from the entry in the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' on Henry Hussey 1825-1903 'evangelist millenarian printer and historian . Hussey's printing and publishing encouraged him to literary endeavours and in 1862 his entry in the Gawler Institute competition for a history of South Australia won the prize. To compile this work he had access to government archives and to the private papers of G.F. Angas. Through this introduction and possibly some mutual religious sympathies Hussey became Angas's secretary in 1865. Angas later acquired Hussey's manuscript and with help from the Angas family it was edited in England by Edwin Hodder and published in 1893. Hussey supported Angas's opposition to Roman Catholicism and their propaganda included the distribution of 2000 copies of Foxe's "Book of Martyrs" and the organizing of a successful petition against precedence for prelates. This experience of public debate led Hussey to stand for Encounter Bay in the House of Assembly in 1874 but he incurred the displeasure of some of his religious followers and withdrew before the poll. After Angas died in 1879 Hussey was authorized to gather material for his biography which was also edited by Hodder and published in England in 1891. Hussey's autobiography refers to many diaries and private papers of Angas which do not seem to have survived'. Provenance: Geoffrey Ingleton with the G. & N. John Howard Angas 1823-1904 was the second son of George Fife Angas. 'In 1841 he entered G.F. Angas & Co. His father's affairs in South Australia were then causing him great financial difficulties. That year he told John that he was to go to the colony to manage his estate. Angas learned German land surveying and mapping to help him in his dealings with his father's German tenants and with the subdivision of his Barossa estate' the full 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' entry is worth reading in any event.
