‎De la bibliothèque princière du Liechtenstein. Lyon, Melchior et Gaspard Trechsel, 1535. In-folio de 149 pp., (4) pp., (180) pp. avec 49 cartes sur double-page et 1 à pleine page, (75) pp., f. d’errata remonté, pt. trou p. 101. Maroquin rouge, double filet et roulette dorés encadrant les plats, fleuron doré à la grenade au centre et aux angles, dos orné de même restauré, gardes bleues, tranches dorées. Reliure du XVIIIe siècle. 390 x 270 mm.‎

‎Première édition de la géographie de Ptolémée donnée par Michel Servet à Lyon en 1535. Elle est rare. Baudrier, XII, 250 ; Mireille Pastoureau, Les Atlas français, XVIe-XVIIe siècles, pp. 380-381 ; Alden & Landès, 535-14 ; Philipps, Atlases, 364 ; Sabin 66483 ; Harrisse 210. Les frères Melchior et Gaspard Trechsel, libraires-imprimeurs lyonnais actifs entre 1530 et 1540, achetèrent les bois du Ptolémée de Grüninger et entreprirent d’en donner une nouvelle édition. Le texte fut établi par Michel Servet (Villanovanus), à partir de la traduction de Pirckheimer. Théologien et physicien espagnol, Servet avait étudié la médecine à Montpellier. Polémiste favorable à la Réforme mais opposé à Calvin, il avait cherché refuge à Lyon. Engagé comme correcteur par les Trechsel à partir de 1535, il travailla également pour d’autres libraires-imprimeurs gagnés aux idées nouvelles. Il fut condamné au bûcher à l’instigation de Calvin en 1553 pour ses doctrines hérétiques. « Parmi les additions de Servet, il faut noter les lignes qu’il ajoute à la notice de l’Amérique et dans lesquelles il proteste le premier contre l’injustice faite à Colomb. En bon espagnol, Servet ne voulait point qu’on pût attribuer aux Portugais l’honneur de la découverte. La présentation des cartes est identique à celle de l’édition de 1525. Sur leur verso, les textes ont été recomposés et l’on retrouve presque tous les bois décoratifs, mais dans un ordre différent. » L’édition est illustrée de 49 grandes cartes gravées sur double-page et d’1 à pleine page. Beaucoup présentent le texte au verso, au sein d’un encadrement gravé sur bois de très belle facture. Pour les autres, le texte descriptif a été supprimé en raison des effets du calvinisme puisque Calvin avait ordonné que de nombreux exemplaires des éditions antérieures soient brûlés. 27 des cartes dépeignent l’ancien monde et 22 le nouveau monde. Ces cartes ont été reprises sur les bois utilisés par Lorenz Fries pour les éditions de Gruninger de 1522 et 1525. 4 cartes représentent le continent américain. Plusieurs illustrations ont été gravées d’après des dessins de Dürer et plusieurs cartes représentent des parties de l’Amérique. La dernière carte est une planisphère contenant l’Amérique et indiquant les vents d’après un dessin d’Albert Dürer, elle est datée de 1522 et signée des initiales de L. Fucs. La gravure sur bois de la page 123 représentant une sphère d’après Dürer fut publiée pour la première fois dans le Ptolémée de 1525. Le texte est en outre orné de 4 grands diagrammes gravés sur bois. Très plaisant exemplaire de ce recueil recherché, très frais, orné d’un titre réglé et aquarellé en rouge et vert alterné, rare en maroquin rouge du XVIIIe siècle. Il provient de la bibliothèque princière du Liechtenstein avec ex libris gravé.‎
