Il volume è il catalogo della mostra di Pisa (Palazzo Reale, 20 settembre 14 dicembre 2008). La mostra intende ricostruire, alla luce dei più recenti contributi storiografici e di inedite acquisizioni, il clima politico e culturale della città sotto il governo lorenese (1737-1859). Pisa, tra le realtà politiche e culturali più importanti del Granducato di Toscana, dall'avvento dei Lorena sul trono granducale trasse nuovi stimoli per la propria rinascita. In particolare, la città, dove la corte trascorreva tanta parte del periodo invernale, visse un periodo di rinnovato splendore proprio a partire dalla sua consacrazione da parte di Pietro Leopoldo come seconda città del regno. La vita e il gusto della corte, la vasta opera riformatrice di un sovrano illuminato come Pietro Leopoldo, la circolazione dei grandi motivi culturali, i rapporti con le istituzioni e la moderna politica del territorio, sono i temi che raccontano il divenire di una città e di una provincia in un lungo periodo che, attraverso lumi e restaurazioni, si conclude alle soglie dell'Unità con la presa di coscienza di una identità nazionale italiana. In mostra dipinti, sculture, disegni, stampe, arredi, provenienti da collezioni pubbliche e private italiane ed estere (circa cento opere provenienti dallo stesso Palazzo Reale di Pisa, dalla Galleria d'Arte moderna di Palazzo Pitti a Firenze, dal Kunsthistorisches Museum di Vienna, dal Museo di Palazzo Sternberg di Praga).
