Salt Lake City Utah: Red Butte Press 2009. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Moser Barry. No. 60 of 125 copies folio size 23 pp. Wallace Earle Stegner 1909-1993 was a novelist short story writer and enviornmentalist; often called "The Dean of Western Writers" he was a member of the faculty at Stanford University and founded its creative writing program. The Stegner Fellowship program at Stanford was named in his honour and he is a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 and the U.S. National Book Award in 1977. First published in "The Atlantic" in 1959 "To a Young Writer" is an essay in which Stegner offers courage to writers beginning in the field and offers an assessment of the difficulties and rewards of serious writing. In the essay he writes "You are scheduled -- doomed -- to be a serious writer regarding life seriously and reporting it to a small audience." This is not meant to scare new writers away from writing but rather to encourage writers in their calling in their craft and to continue the lineage of great writing like those that have come before. This gorgeous publication by the Red Butte Press includes a dedication by American novelist and poet Wendell Berry b. 1934 a recipient of The National Humanities Medal much of whose fiction centres on a small fictinalised Kentucky town in a similar vein to William Faulkner and an introduction by Lynn Stegner daughter-in-law of Wallace Stegner a novelist herself who provides well-articulated insight to the life and beliefs of Wallace Stegner as he spent his life as a devoted teacher and writer. Included also are three wood engravings by printmaker Barry Moser b. 1940 owner of Pennyroyal Press who has illustrated many books such as Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass". His engravings here offer a delicate beauty a softness to match the rich tones of Stegner's essay. This lovely edition has an attractive piece of wood inset on the front board and is housed in a burgundy cloth clamshell box. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter black leather with black cloth boards wood inset with three round copper pieces on the front board fore- and bottom edges uncut black paste-down endpapers only frontispiece portrait of Wallace Stegner a black-and-white wood engraving by Barry Moser title page in brown and black with printer's device wood engraving by Moser on the page preceding the essay and another wood engraving by Moser on the final page of the essay; Fournier type handmade cotton paper folio size 13.25" by 9.5" pagination: 1-6 7-21 22-23 one of 125 copies this number 60.
