Creighton is seeking information regarding money paid to General James Denny in order to assist John Barr the administrator of Denny's estate. William Creighton 1778-1851 was Ohio's first secretary of state 1803-1808 and represented Ohio in Congress from 1813 to 1816 and from 1826 to 1830. Major General James Denny 1767-1815 served in the War of 1812. Although he was born and died in Pennsylvania he spent years in Ohio. A pencilled note below the letter indicates that Denny had received funds to pay the Ohio militia and volunteers. In Very Good- Condition: light creases; just starting to separate at several folds; clean and bright. unknown

The famed English hostess par excellence at age 18 married the 41-year-old Robert Crewe-Milnes at that time The Lord Houghton 1885-95 and later the Earl of Crewe 1895-1911 and Marquess of Crewe 1911-1945 British politician and statesman who served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1882-95 Leader of the House of Lords 1908-16 and twice as Lord President of the Council 1905-08 1915-16. ALS written on behalf of and signed for her husband 3pp lettersheet 7½" X 5" n.p. 1907 July 23. Addressed to "My dear George." Near fine. Boldly penned in black ink on letterhead bearing the oval blindstamp at top of first page of "Privy Council Office" the 26-year-old Marchioness of Crew here pens a retained draft of one of her husband's letters noting "Private" at upper left of first page. Interesting if cryptic reading in part: "I need not say that we desire to proceed with great caution in the matters which the Bishop of Birmingham wishes us to discuss tomorrow & that we shall give all due weight to the opinions which you and others express on behalf of Oxford. Nothing very definite I imagine will come of the debate: but it ought to be an interesting discussion. I hope you are tolerably well I wish we could have a tall one of these days." She signs off "sd Crewe" and adds a postscript. Most unusual in this format. unknown

He Supported George Canning's Motion In 1822 For A Bill To Relieve The Disabilities Of Roman Catholic Peers And Consistently Supported Liberal Principles. He Took Little Interest In Party Politics But Was A Strong Advocate Of State Support For The Causes Of Literature And The Fine Arts. In 1824 Agar-Ellis Was The Leading Promoter Of The Grant Of £57000 For The Purchase Of John Julius Angerstein's Collection Of Pictures Which Formed The Foundation Of The National Gallery. On The Formation Of Lord Grey's Whig Administration In November 1830 He Was Sworn Of The Privy Council And Appointed First Commissioner Of Woods And Forests. However He Was Forced To Resign After Two Months Due To Bad Health. In June 1831 During His Father's Lifetime Agar-Ellis Was Raised To The Peerage As Baron Dover Of Dover In The County Of Kent. He Was President Of The Royal Society Of Literature In 1832 A Trustee Of The British Museum And Of The National Gallery And A Commissioner Of Public Records. Lord Dover Married Lady Georgiana Howard Daughter Of George Howard 6Th Earl Of Carlisle In 1822. They Had Two Sons Who Became Respectively The 3Rd Viscount And 5Th Viscount And Two Daughters. He Died On The 10 July 1833 Aged Only 36 Predeceasing His Father By Three Years. Liverpool: James Smith 1822. First edition of this compilation of issues of Cobbett's Register collected in 1821 bound together with Cropper's letters to Wilberforce. Octavo bound in three quarters calf over marbled boards. Bookplate of Edward Nicholas Hurt to the front panel with his signature to the title page and notes to the front free endpaper and verso. In very good condition. First editions are scarce with the last copy appearing at auction was in 1948. James Cropper 1773-1840 was an English businessman in Liverpool and philanthropist known as an abolitionist. Successful in business Cropper became the founder of Cropper Benson & Co. merchants and made a personal fortune. He worked for the repeal of the orders of council which up to 1811 restricting British commerce with the USA He became an abolitionist active against slavery in the Caribbean. He also was concerned at poverty in Ireland made a series of visits there and established cotton-mills. He also became involved with the port of Liverpool. English pamphleteer farmer and member of parliament William Cobbett sought relentlessly through his commentaries and weekly Register to end the poverty of farm labourers and reform the policies of the borough-mongers sinecurists and "tax-eaters." Although initially staunchly anti-Jacobin by 1804 Cobbett began questioning the policies of the Pitt government especially the immense national debt and the profligate use of sinecures that Cobbett believed was ruining the country and increasing class antagonism.
