This edition is complete as such BNF Notice no.: FRBNF30738909 it was the publisher Arthus Bertrand who republished the text in 1835 and who was the depository of the royal printing house for voyages by adding 3 atlases that completed the publication at various dates a hydrographic atlas a zoological atlas octavo 1839 and an album of aquatint voyage illustrations all in folio format; these very expensive and particularly sumptuous atlases are rarely found with the texts. Following the notes of volume IV Mémoires sur les opérations géographiques par M. Serval notably on the 4 marine chronometers by Berthoud that were carried on the ships. Contemporary light cardboard bindings. Smooth spines decorated with fillets. Brown morocco title labels and volume labels. Spines slightly darkened. Evidence of rubbing. Some corners turned. Scattered foxing. A good copy. Commissioned by the government to reestablish French influence in the Pacific and commercial agreements La Favorite also departed with a scientific purpose which it fully realized. The expedition to the southern lands departed from Toulon in December 1829 and returned in April 1832. Following the African coasts the expedition reached Pondicherry Cochinchina Tonkin the Philippines Australia New Zealand Tasmania and returned crossing the Pacific then followed the coasts of Brazil to finally reach Toulon via the Atlantic. The account and descriptions are extremely rich and detailed aiming for a certain objectivity; the narrator simply describes what he sees without scientific considerations. The mission made a stopover at Bourbon Island and numerous stopovers in all coastal cities Macao Canton Manila Valparaiso Rio de Janeiro. Imprimerie Royale unknown

Last blank leaf pasted to the flyleaf Note: Cyril of Jerusalem or Cyrillus Hierosolymitanus born ca. 315 at Jerusalem became in 350 bishop of his hometown which thanked its centrality as a Christian metropolis to its biblical past and an increasing number of holy sites. The bishop of Jerusalem was together with the bishops of Rome Antioch and Alexandria a person of great authority within Christendom. Cyrillus was a defender of the Holy Trinity of the Nicene creed maintaining the doctrinal formula for the 'homoousios'. Cyrillus died in 381. The Roman Catholics venerate him as a Saint so do the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Anglican Church. A series of 24 catechetical lectures catecheses most of which he delivered in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre survive and they are among the most precious treasures of early Christian literature though they also betray Cyrillus' anti-Jewish sentiment. § The works of Cyrillus in this edition of 1720 were edited by the Benedictine of the Maurist Congregation Dom Antoine-Augustin Touttée 1677-1718 and published posthumously. They are preceded by his extensive and learned dissertations on the life writings and doctrine of the bishop of Jerusalem. Touttée's studies covering circa 140 pages are the first important studies on Cyrillus they consist of 1: 'De vita et rebus gestis S. Cyrilli Hierosolymitani'; 2: 'De scriptis S. Cyrilli ac potissimum Catechesibus'; 3: 'De variis Cyrillianae doctrinae capitibus'. § The collection opens with Cyrillus' 19 i.e 1 18 lectures/catecheses addressed to the candidates looking forward to baptism at the coming Easter p. 1/302 the first of which is the 'Procatechesis' an introductory catechesis p. 1/14. In it Cyrillus greets the neophytes 'you who are to be enlightened' in compassionate manner: 'Vos iam adstat beatitudinis odor o illuminandi' p. 1. He then stresses the gravity of the step which they are about to take and the need for repentance and preparation. The first of the next 18 lectures deals 'with the temper of mind requisite for baptism. It urges us to lay aside all mundane concern forgive personal enemies . and feed the soul by reading the Bible'. Quasten 3364 The second catechesis treats penitence and temptations the 3rd baptism and salvation. The 4th is a summary of the Christian doctrine the 5th treats the nature and origin of faith. The other lectures contain 'expositions of the successive articles of the Jerusalem Creed of which the most important was the baptismal formula used by those who were baptized to confess their faith publicly: 'Credo in Patrem et in Filium et in Sanctum Spiritum et in unum Baptisma poenitentiae' or 'I believe in the Father and in the Son and in the Holy Ghost and in one Baptism of repentance' Catechesis 19 cap. 9. page 309. After these 19 lectures follow 5 so-called 'Mystagogical Catecheses' which were directed to the newly baptized during Easter week. p. 303/332 The first 3 deal with baptism and chrismation confirmation the 4th with the eucharistic doctrine and the 5th with the eucharistic liturgy. The mystagogical lectures are followed by Cyrillus' only surviving homily 'Homilia in paralyticum ad piscinam probaticam jacentem' a sermon on chapter 5 of the gospel of John a story about the paralyzed man at the Pool of Bethesda who was healed by Jesus on a sabbath p. 333/344. A letter of Cyrillus to the emperor Constantius 317-361 A.D. 'De viso Hierosolymis lucidae crucis signo' survives too. p. 345/356. In this letter Cyrillus 'reports about about the miraculous apparition of a great cross of light that was seen from Jerusalem on May 7 351'. Quasten 3367 After this letter are printed some spurious works of Cyrillus 'De occursu Domini' some spurious letters one to and one from Augustinus p. 357/388 and also 'variantes lectiones' and 'praefationes' of earlier editions and the 'praefatio' of bishop Thomas Milles to his Cyrillus edition of 1703 together with his commentary p. 389/416. 1837 - 1840 EXTRAORDINARY ORIGINAL PRIVATE JOURNAL HANDWRITTEN BY A MIDSHIPMAN AS THE SHIP TRAVELS TO RUSSIA TO MEET THE EMPEROR THEN MOVES ON TO SOUTH AMERICA TASKED WITH PROTECTING AMERICAN COMMERCE AT ALL COSTS AS FLAGSHIP OF THE BRAZIL STATION
BOSTON TO KRONSTADT TO BRAZIL STATION. Good. 1837. On offer is a journal recorded during a fascinating time in General American and U.S. Naval History. The journal is written on the U.S.S. Independence as she travels from Boston to Portsmouth England onto Copenhagen and Kronstadt to receive a visit from Russian Emperor Nicholas I. The Independence then leaves Russia for Rio de Janeiro where she becomes the Flagship of the Brazil Station tasked with the duty to guard American commerce along the eastern seaboard of South America during the war between France and Argentina. A page in the very beginning of the book states Private Journal of A Cruise in U.S. Ship Independence During the years 1837 1838 1839 and 1840 Under Commo. John B. Nicolson On the Brazilian Station. Another a bit later states Cyrus E. Joy. U.S. Ship Independence. Cyrus Joy is presumably the author of the journal. The ship leaves Boston on May 20th 1837 in presence of thousands of spectators who crowded the adjacent wharves to witness our departure. On board the ship is the Honorable George M. Dallas who at that time had served as Mayor of Philadelphia U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania 183133 and would eventually become the 11th Vice President of the United States in 1845 under President James K. Polk. According to the journal author he is said to be a man of exalting talents sound discriminating judgements. At the time Mr. Dallas had been recently appointed Minister to Russia. The ship crosses the Atlantic in what a soldier would call quickest time and the ship reaches Portsmouth England after 22 days. On the 20th of June the King of England William IV dies and the next day Queen Victoria his niece ascends the throne. All colours in the harbors and most likely in the kingdom were displayed at half mast and we fired guns in honour of the deceased. Soon after this firing ceased we manned the rigging cheered ship and fired a Royal Salute on the occasion of Queen Victoria's daughter of the Duke of Kent and niece to the late Sovereign. The ship moves on to Copenhagen then Kronstadt situated at the head of the gulf of Finland. The ship is visited by the Emperor Nicholas and wife. We were by no means in condition for such a visit. We had been up the greater part of the preceding night and after coming to anchor pulling sail &c. We proceeded to holy-stone the decks washed and dried them down in the neatest manner. After this we ___ our topmast rigging in afresh and the utmost exertions were used by all hands to put the ship in the best order for the expected visit though she was after all very far from being in first-rate condition. The author describes the Emperor as a tall stout well made man with light reddish hair blue eyes high forehead and high cheek bones and has a remarkably loft and commanding appearance. The author speaks very highly of Nicholas and the visit goes smoothly and enjoyably. The whole event is a thoroughly enjoyable portion of the journal. The author spends time comparing the Danes and the Russians before the ship leaves again this time heading for Rio de Janeiro. This section of the journal ends as the ship reaches Portsmouth England again. The journal begins again in 1839 as the ship is in South America protecting American commerce. Feb. 9th 1839. Here we found our presence much needed for the protection of American property. When we left the first time the French had nothing like a respectable force on the station.Their forces however have been increased but are also too weak for the a blockade of more than the port of Buenos Aires. The entries in this portion are spread out with long periods in between each entry. The ship seems to go between Rio and Montevideo providing protection of American trading ships in the area. The author also speaks of the reasons for the war and the Independences role in helping mediate the conflict as well as thoughts on the role of the American Navy in the formations of a character abroad as well as at home. The soldiers also seem fairly unhappy on the ship after a while. Jan 1st 1840. At Montevideo and little prospect of leaving soon. More than 100 of the men have completed the full term for which they entered the services and are clamorous to be sent home.Under these circumstances no ship can hardly be deemed fit for actual service. The ship finally leaves the Brazil Station after being thirty five months on this cruise. I think I shall stop at home a few months at least. The journal continues with the next entry explaining that after three months of doing nothing Mr. Joy joins the Montezuma Capt. Christiansen bound to Liverpool. Having heard of such a thing as Happy England he is struck all aback to see the number of prostitutes beggars ballad singers &c. I do believe that in this single place there is more persons of the above description than in the whole of the U.S. You can not walk from the docks up in the city without being accosted every two or three minutes by a female with I say Jack wont you treat us or Shipmate give us a chew tobacco will ye or God bless your honour you havnt got never a penny for a poor fellow have ye. The entry ends with a list entitled U.S. Ship Independence. List of Officers 20th May 1837. John B. Nicolson. The list contains more than 3 dozen names of all the men on board including midshipman on the ship. There is also a list of Salutes fired during the years 1837 38 39 & 40. with the columns Date No. of guns Quantity of powder and When and on the opposite page On What occasion. The list is 12 pages long and provides a fantastic and comprehensive list of where the Independence was during the years of the authors journal and the special occasions on which it fired salutes. The journal also contains a hand drawn portrait of the face of Emperor Nicholas I with the date July 29th 1837 written underneath. The drawing is amateur but very well done in a number of colors. The book is roughly 220 pages in which there is writing in approximately 70 or 80 pages. The handwriting is easy to read and legible throughout in black ink which is rarely faded. The pages show some discoloration and wear but nothing that affects the legibility of the writing. The cover shows a good deal of wear and age damage but is still very structurally sound. A number of the pages with writing have come loose from the binding but are still gathered together so they are not loose from each other. There are two major gatherings detached and the rest of the book is still in the binding. Overall: G. Sample Text: May 19th 1837. All ready for sea and people in crowds visiting our ship. Some probably to see and be seen but many very many to take leave of friends and comrades dear bound on a long and tiresome cruise. Such numbers came off in boats that it was impossible to admit all and numbers were compelled to return without bidding their friends farewell as gratifying their curiosity by inspecting our kindly beautiful ship.; July 4th. We fired a National Salute but had no merry making on the occasion. It was in fact the dullest Fourth I have ever witnessed.; June 23rd 1839. We have been nearly 18 months from Boston before we were allowed to go on shore and many of us have been almost two years on board without having been out of the ship.I am of opinion the men should have had liberty much oftener: and I believe they might have had it without detriment to the service or themselves. Background: The USS Independence was a wooden-hulled three-masted ship originally a ship of the line and the first to be commissioned by the United States Navy. Originally a 90-gun ship in 1836 she was cut down by one deck and re-rated as a 54-gun frigate. Independence recommissioned on 26 March 1837 and sailed from Boston on 20 May 1837 as flagship of Commodore John B. Nicholson. On board for her record passage across the Atlantic Ocean to England was the Honorable George Dallas Minister to Russia. She arrived at Portsmouth England 13 June called at Copenhagen; then proceeded into Kronstadt 29 July 1837 to receive a visit from the Emperor Nicholas I of Russia. Two days later a steam boat arrived to transport Mr. Dallas and his family to St. Petersburg. Having received marked social courtesies from the Russian government Independence departed Kronstadt on 13 August 1837 for Rio de Janeiro where she became flagship of the Brazil Squadron to guard American commerce along the eastern seaboard of South America. This duty continued into the spring of 1839 when Commodore Nicholson attempted mediation to end the war between France and Argentina. The Independence returned north to New York on 30 March 1840. She was laid up in ordinary until 14 May 1842 when she became flagship of Commodore Charles Stewart in the Home Squadron. Anderson who was incarcerated in the Arkansas Department of Correction penal system. It was used by the author as a diary journal datebook and ledger though rather sparsely and sporadically but still an interesting look into the mind of a prisoner and what goes through his head as he deals with his incarceration. 1854 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT FOLDED LETTER DETAILING THE SHIPWRECK OF THE 'HUMBOLDT' NEAR HALIFAX NOVA SCOTIA
HALIFAX NOVA SCOTIA LIVERPOOL ENGLAND 1854. On offer is a super handwritten manuscript folded letter dated Halifax January 5 1854. The author details to his nephew John M. Lines "the unfortunate loss of the Humboldt." He describes the sinking which took place in less than an hour on December 5. The ship had taken on a pilot "He ran the ship against a ____ ____ which broke a part of the bow . . . leaking badly in about half an hour sinking. She was filling with water . . ." Where this happened was about 12 miles from Halifax in a rocky place and "She soon became a total wreck." There were about 750 packages of cargo. "The loss must be heavy on ship and cargo." The letter measures approx. 7 3/4" x 10". The Humboldt was a renowned ship of the New York and Havre Steam Navigation Co. The Cunard Niagara carried her passengers on to Boston. Research suggests this letter was carried to Liverpool aboard the Cunard Line's America. Numerous postal markings - most indistinct - but a nice clear Liverpool JA 16 1854 mark. Mailed to Paris. History of the Great Reformation of the Sixteenth Century in Germany Switzerland.

First edition set of Aubergine's important history of the protestant reformation from the library of the thirteenth President of the United States Millard Fillmore who established the first White House library. Octavo 5 volumes. Bound in three quarters contemporary black calf over olive green boards gilt titles and tooling to the spine raised tooled bands marbled endpapers all edges marbled engraved frontispiece portrait of Martin Luther with tissue guard present. In very good condition with Millard Fillmore's ownership inscription and library catalog notes on the title page of each volume "Millard Fillmore March 26 1857 Rebound April 16 1860" who has also crossed out the "J-5" bookshelf designation replacing it with "G-1" in pencil. An exceptional piece of American history from the President who created the White House Library. The 12th Vice President United States Millard Fillmore was elevated to the presidency in 1850 by the death of President Zachary Taylor. Born into relative poverty in upstate New York he became a prominent lawyer and politician in the Buffalo area and a Whig as the party formed in the 1830s in opposition to the policies of Andrew Jackson. During the American Civil War Fillmore was critical of Lincoln's war policies and openly denounced secession asserting that the Union must be maintained by force if necessary. As President he was instrumental in passing the Compromise of 1850 which led to a brief truce in the conflict between slave and free states which divided the Union and strengthened the Fugitive Slave Act which provided for the return of slaves who escaped from one state into another territory. Quarto original illustrated boards illustrated endpapers illustrated with lithographs on stone in five colors and printed by offset lithography. Ingri & Edgar Parin D'Aulaire were the first 20th century artists to author and illustrate children's books using earlier craftsman's methods such as stone lithography. They won the Caldecott Medal from the American Library Association in 1940 recognizing the previous year's "most distinguished American picture book for children." Fine in the scarce original dust jacket which is price-clipped and in very good condition. American children's book authors and illustrators Ingri and Edgar Parin d'Aulaire helped shape the golden age of children's books in mid-twentieth century America with elaborately illustrated titles which focused on American and Norwegian history and returned to earlier methods of printing illustrations. Many of the d'Aulaires' early books depict the scenery and folktales of Norway: Ola Children of the Northlights East of the Sun and West of the Moon. Later their attention shifted to their adopted country and they produced books about American folk heroes such as Pocahontas Benjamin Franklin and Buffalo Bill. Small booklabel of H. Holbrook on the front pastedown endpaper. Pages are clean and unmarked with almost no foxing. 1796. First Edition. Top edge gilt. Bound in old marbled boards with handsome black leather spine and corners. The spine has 5 raised bands and is elaboratedly gilt stamped with rules and ornaments with gilt titles printed over two beautiful red leather spine labels. PHOTOS UPON REQUEST. Marbled endpapers match the binding. Some copies of this work have an errata-leaf stating that pp. 224-237 were never printed and hence form no interruption of the work. Memorable French dilettante artist famed fop and hanger-on a legendary man of fashion and society wit who befriended royalty and nobility as well as Lord Byron and Benjamin Disraeli. Third person ALS 1p 4½" X 7" lightly tipped to heavy stock album leaf n.p. 1844 February 23. Very good. Lightly age toned. Interesting third-person note signed twice within the text. In part: "Count D'Orsay presents his compliments to Mr Crowley and thanks him very much for the Etching which is admirable -- Mr Landseer Saw it and is quite delighted with it. Count D'Orsay remembers very well having had the pleasure of being introduced to Mr Crowley by Prince Napoleon." Recipient is most likely Nicholas Joseph Crowley 1819-57 well known IRish portrait painter who resided in London. Landseer of course refers to Edwin Landseer 1802-73 English artist famed for his paintings and sculptures of animals. d'Orsay was well known as a fanatical supporter of all things Bonaparte. Prince Louis Napoleon later Emperor Napoleon III was often hosted at d'Orsay's fashionable residence in London and it may have been during one of these visits that the Prince introduced d'Orsay to Crowley. Quite handsome letter signed two times in the third person with interesting references. unknown

This Canadian-born American actress of vaudeville and films often played French girls in such movies as "They Had to See Paris" 1929 with Will Rogers "Hot for Paris" 1930 "Three Legionnaires" 1937 and many others. IPS 7½" X 9½" n.p. January 1935. Near fine. Handsome sepia-tone closeup portrait of D'Orsay and then husband actor Maurice Hill smiling cheek to cheek. In a light portion at upper left she signs and inscribes boldly in blue ink: "To Eddie Kesner / a real live booster / Best of luck / Maurice and Fifi-Hill / Jan. 1935." D'Orsay married Hill in 1933 and divorced him in 1938 so photographs signed with this married name are uncommon. A delightful vintage image beautifully signed. unknown

"A Cursory but Free and Candid Examination of the Divine Authority of the Books Contained in the Old-Testament; with some Strictures on the Tenets of Those Called Orthodox-Christians."
America 1773. Manuscript. Good. folio 5 ff. 163 5 pp. original manuscript bound in contemporary vellum front cover with title inked in early hand; binding darkened stained and rubbed with vellum cracked and peeling over spine. Sewing loosening; a number of leaves separated. Pages age-toned with minor offsetting edges of first few leaves tattered with the lower portion of title leaf chipped away. Apparently unpublished 18th century American manuscript dealing with natural religion the nature of prophecy and revelation and the definition of "real Christianity" vs. "Orthodoxy." The author seems to have been at least contemplating publication as a preliminary advertisement offers the usual disclaimer regarding a work "never intended. for the Eye of the Public" that might yet "accidentally fall into private Hands" of "Strangers." That advertisement is signed "W. D." with "America 1773." Supplied below in a slightly smaller finer lettering; text on p. 112 refers in passing to "this 28th Dec.r 1773." References to "modern" or current events are slim to nonexistent; but Liebnitz appears unfavorably. The author also cites more approvingly Drs. Clarke Sherlock and Burnet - along with "Machiavel" on the nature of governments. Gil Blas is mentioned as a history that might be viewed as truth by the credulous ages hence; Shaftesbury Voltaire and Locke are treated of in the last pages. The text is reasonably but not excessively erudite there are occasional forays into Greek and Latin; the work's tone is often combative with the author's negative opinions of much Jewish philosophy and doctrine bluntly expressed. <br /> books
